Tottenham will reportedly have to pay Portsmouth at least £8million if they are to strike a deal for Matt Taylor.

White Hart Lane chief Martin Jol is keen to strengthen the left-hand side of his midfield, having received summer knock-backs on offers for Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing and Manchester City new-boy Martin Petrov.

Jol tried for Taylor 18 months ago but the deal collapsed at the last minute and the Dutchman is now ready to revive his interest in the highly-rated 25-year-old.

A clutch of new arrivals at Fratton Park has cast doubt on Taylor's first-team place at Fratton Park, but Pompey boss Harry Redknapp will still demand a huge asking price.

Tottenham are unwilling to do business at that valuation but will consider an offer in the region of £4million for Taylor, who weighed in with nine goals last season including some spectacular long-range efforts.

i would rather see taraabt get his chance, he could be be a world beater, and Matt Taylor will always just be....well Matt Taylor really (i know that is a fuzzy kind of logic, but its friday.)

Come on 1245 tomorrow! I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it, I'm about to lose control and I think I like it...oh yeah

Decent player with a great shot, but is neither the specialist left winger we want nor a cut above our other midfielders. Like the post above I would rather we gave the chance to Taraabt who really could become something special or persist with our other current options.

Personally I'd like to see him, still young, great left foot and is a spurs fan!!

Seriously though, minus the spurs fan bit i think he'd be ideal for us! always rated him myself and wud be happy if he came to us but can't see Redknapp selling him..shame!

I'd like us to sign him aswell. However the price tag is way over the moon. Pompey wanting £8 m for him, that's is ridiculous....

But for £4 m - sign him.....

So a player who's 1st team spot for portsmouth is doubdtful is now a target for spurs? OK then.

MOre of a defensive minded player, no? I would think he'd be more cover for our rather troubled left back position.

Injuries and 18 years old is a problem.

do we really need ANOTHER left back?

What makes me so dam angry is why does our club take so long to decide if they went to sign players!. Take Mat Taylor for example, we could have signed him long before he went to Portsmouth but no club could not decide if they should take risk, then ports signed him they got promoted then his current contract was coming to end and spurs still could not make up there minds up, the fee was only 1 million now rumours are out again saying we are interested in him again now dam fee will be 8 mill!! When will our club ever learn???.

I think he would be a great buy - he can play left back or left midfield depending on injuries and opponents. he would give us some strong defensive attributes against very attacking minded teams and also make us a little more dangerous with shots outside the box. Our back four is sorted, but defensively our midfield is not great - especially when TT is injured. Therefore bring him in to add some bite to our midfield, strengthan our left side, give us some outside the box shooting opportunities, and provide cover to Bale at LB. I think that between Steed, taylor and Adel that left side would be nicely covered for any situation.

That's frankly complete garbage. Spurs made an offer for Taylor last January, but even then Portsmouth were overpricing him.

We haven't tried hard to sign Taylor because we didn't really feel that enthusiastic. Assuming that this story has any truth in it at all (which I doubt), we still don't appear to have much enthusiasm, as we're only willing to pay half of what his club want. You can't buy any English player with two eyes and two legs for £4m these days. If it is true, it's just a bit of a speculative enquiry to test the market.

Spurs don't have any problem "making their mind up" about what fee they want to pay. It's just that Levy negotiates very hard and, unlike a lot of fans who just want the club to buy their favourite players at any price, he won't pay over what he considers to be a reasonable price (and don't start on about Bent - the market there was made by West Ham, not by Spurs).

Anyway, your post is utter moonshine, beginning to end.

I can't believe this story. I just don't think we would want him, even at four million. We already have better options.

Are you serious about this post mate - That's football init?

I'm sure Man Utd would have prefered to sign Carrick when he was valued £2,75 m at West Ham instead of £18,6 m at Spurs.

This player is so underrated, cannot believe he is not in the England team. His work rate is one of the best in England, he is great at getting forward, and is defending is amazing. Not sure what his best position would be leftback or left wing. Been told he as a great shot from long range as well.
Let us give Matty Spurs Supporter as chance to shine at White Hart Lane, If we do I believe it could be the difference between fifth and fouth place.

I think he was fantastic last season and could do well for us at LM. Yes £8mil seems a lot, but I would take it if we can still off-load:

Mido - £6mil
Ghaly - £3mil
Murphy - £1mil
and maybe Routledge - £2/£3mil.

If we can do that I would happily take Taylor and slot him the No. 14 shirt.

to be fair, think it most unreasonable to criticise our transfer policy. Would think Murphy is the only current squad member who has lost value during past 3 years, and pretty sure we have at least recouped expenditure on all sales during that time.

personally like him and think he would improve the squad. don't think he's woth that money, but then again it's not my money. think we'd be better with him in the squad, but not overly bothered one way or another. too excited about tomorrow now!

Relax mate. If it's 8 mill we won't touch him.
Half that could be a good addition. Left footed and very versatile.

Agreed, mate. Why didn't we sign Rooney from Everton back in 02? Or how about Ronaldo before he broke into Sporting's first team? Gerrard would have been a great signing back when he was still in Liverpool's youth squad. What were Spurs thinking?! Commoli and Jol out!

i like taylor though. decent player.

which other LM's are we likely to sign? MGP still a possibilty?

Yet another (extremely!) overrated British football player. Le coq le Prince or Taraabt will solve our left-oriented difficulties. Or perhaps even Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. Or not.. Who knows? I don't.. DO YOU????!

Malbranque is better-even if he drifts. The guy is class and had a good first season. I don't understand why spurs fans forget about him or just don't rate him-he's awesome. Matty Taylor is average, and always will be. We don't need cover, we have 3 left backs and better players who can play on the wing. And I'd rather they gave me 20 quid for my testacles than wasted 8 million on average joe.

He is not the ideal answer to our left wing problem, but he could be useful for this season. We need as many options as possible. If he scored 9 goals last seaon, he's got to be worth buying.

we really need a good creative midfield on the pitch. i just cant believe sven's signings look so good. hopefully prince will be our gerrard, lampard, scholes, ronaldo, messi or just any other game-winner out there from midfield. we have the strikeforce just need some creativity from midfield.

In hindsight, maybe Taylor wouldn't be that bad of a signing. We're in desperate need of width. He's not ideal, but would definitely be an upgrade on all our other natural LMs.

England Head Coach John Peacock has suffered a major setback after Danny Rose was ruled out of the World Cup with a stress fracture.

The Tottenham midfielder, influential as England reached the Final of the European Championships in May, complained of some discomfort in his leg and after an examination from medical staff Peacock’s worst fears were confirmed. "It’s a shame, not just for the squad but for him too," said Peacock. "When he said he had some pain in his calf, we had him checked out to see if he was OK. Unfortunately he wasn’t and he has a stress fracture.

That's all we need!
