Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been put on alert for Real Madrid's £5 million midfielder Guti.

Madrid president Ramon Calderon is desperate to sign Chelsea winger Arjen Robben and that would allow Guti to leave the club.

Tottenham have gone for Guti twice before and Real have asked them whether they would be keen on the 30-year-old as part of a transfer merry-go-round.

Spurs boss Martin Jol wants to sign a left-sided midfielder and Levy may now get the chance to resurrect his interest in Guti.

That would be an interesting move!

He's not a left winger tho, he's barely even a left sided midfielder! He's a central midfield playmaker and that is where all his best work is done. He has good vision and close skill but I just see him as an older version of what we already look to have in KPB.

Why can't we just make a move for a left winger!? I appreciate that Levy, DC and Jol know what they are doin but it is so frustrating when surely there are plenty of good options out there. I mean Drenthe went to Real for the same money that we paid for Bale so why not go in for him!??

Agree with the above post.

Can Jol and co. not see that we desperately need a left winger. Why aren't we trying to get in a top class winger? Surely Jol realises that we need one asap.

31 in October , 1 goal in 29 La Liga games in 06/07 , £5m seems alot . Use the Mido money(?) and go for Pedersen, 26 in Sept , 8 goals last season .....and plenty of Prem experience......much safer bet. NO THANKS GUTI.

i think the answers in your own question!! Why would he want to sign for us when Real want him!

ps. how many people on this board have actually seen KPB play? how can people call for him to be in the starting 11 when they havent even seen him play (aprt from some highlights on youtube!)

I was bored earlier and looked at Queresma on youtube, and i know its only few clips but this guy looks good, wouldnt say he'd need adjustin to prem as is like ronaldo and nani but stronger! wouldnt mind him on left and lennon on the right!
However i havent seen him play much so cant comment on what havent seen but looked promising better than teemu on the wing anyways! COYS tonight!

I'm not sure about him but he may give us the experience leadership that we seem to be lacking.

I wouldn't judge players by youtube. I think you could make Jenas look a world class player in a 2 minute clip.

Some journo sees how uncreative we were against Sunderland
and wow & behold...we are now in for someone over the hill.
Why not just have kept Davids?

Dont sign him. Never sign him. Blows hot and cold for his boyhood team, how much effort is he going to put in for someone else?

Get a left footed left winger. Someone, anyone, just play some wingers!!!

To old and would only come over here for a last chance big wage.KPB in 6 months to a year will become a regular if DC,levy and Jol are to be believed.

When the guy says we have tried twice to buy him before, I suspect what he means is "we've run this story twice
For all we know Spurs have never been remotely interested in him. Certainly our policy of buying players like KPB (20) and Bale(17) would indicate no great readiness to spend five million on a thirty year old.

I'd take him.

I'd take him.

Im not so sure.

I watched him all season in La Liga last season and he was brilliant for them, especially against Barca at home. He ran the game. But he's 30 now, 31 this winter. He's not a natural left winger.

Would bringing him in just clog up our midfield squad all the more? Should we be properly concentrating on the left-wing vacancy?

I would love to see him at the Lane coz we haven't had a player who can boss midfield for ages but there are surely more important things to solve first.

Am I right?

Stating that he's 30 is nothing to do with saying he's past it. Its more to do with the risk assessment. Its obvious that the older you get, the less fresh you are than someone who is 23 or 24 etc. Especially as they're all doing the same work and training. Sheringham is a one off.

Stating he's 30 is just another element to remember about the player. Do we REALLY need him / a player like him? If so, is there someone younger? Thats all it is. 30 aint old, I agree with you, but its nearer the "tail end of a players career" than 23 or 24 is.

I'm sick of these CM players. FFS lets offload Murphy, Ghaly and Tainio before we even think of buying one more.

We are desperate for a LW and a playmaker (yes, I think it is now correct to use the word desperate, if we want to finish in top 4) - and Guti is one of the most talented playmakers around, who can pick a killler pass and has a great vision on the pitch. He is not very consistent and his influence can sometimes wane during the match - but same can be said to a degree about anyone, incl Ronaldinho (see Brazil's games)/ Zidane etc.
It would of course be a risk, as there would also be concerns about his application, but if we can get him on loan for a year with an option of permanent signing afterwards, that would not cost too much money (albeit of course his wages would have to be HIGH to attract him) and give KP Boateng time to develop into the playmaker we need in the Prem league. If KPB is ready then, we either do not sign Guti permanently or keep him as one of the 2 creative midfielders who can attack.

Can't say I know too much about the reserves,
but haven't we got any young players coming through
who is leftfooted. He doesn't have to play a whole
match, 20-45 mins just to add some creativity.
Sometimes you have to try new things out.
You never know.

Say this is true, and we do want to sign Guti, what do we have to lose? We can afford the five million, only thing would him settling into a new country. And he could help Taarbat along as well, go for it and see what happens before you pour scorn all over it.

Like Dyer, he has his troubles, but bringing him in for when Lennon doesn't play, can't hurt and he'll have to knuckle down to get that first team spot he'd be guranteed at Spam.

I'd rather play the new lad Rose in his natural possition than buy a 30yr old and play him in the wrong one. One will be comfortable and bust a gut trying to impress the other will have nothing to prove and be less affetive coz he's out of possition.

Just a thought: Nobby solano wants to move to london to follow his wife and kids. No doubt he'll end up with the spammers...but perhaps it'd be worth us having a punt on him? He'd be v cheap and that boy can cross...

I was thinking the same. He would do nicely as a short term fix. Always rated the guy.

It is actually probably more stressful to play for your boyhood team.

Anyway, he is without a doubt, a left sided player inasmuch as he has a left foot that would break a few jaws and sometimes plays out wide. I have no problem with his skill as he is fantastic on his day... but we don;t need another forward running midfielder. WHat would it be with the team? DO they not see the gaping hole just in front of Dawson?

I can only surmise this is journalistic hokum.

I said it before and i will say it again,we should go for Vicente from Valencia.quality leftie and still in late 20's.i know people will say he has had a few injuries, but he is better than anything we have and much better than your downings of this world. He has been there and done and would bring heaps to our beloved team.

I can't stand this guy! We already have to put up with freaken Jenas; God please don't have me support a team with both Jenas and Guti - basically the most over-rated players in English and Spanish football combined!!!

(although most of you are realising about Jenas now)

I have to say that I am quite stunned at the way people characterize Guti here. He may well not be exactly what we need and is no longer a young player, but he IS a world class player with incredible skill and vision who has made the difference in many a key game in la Liga and the CL for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Now, I don't think he will ever sign for us and I'm not even sure it would be a clever move, but I'd be flattered even if he wanted to come - and to say that he is not good enough for Spurs is absolute rubbish.

Excellent passer who can get goals but doesn't match our buying policy and there is little truth in this I think. No way a left winger either.

We either need a left winger or a midfiled playmaker, as there is nothing in the midfield at the moment - it's god-awful.
