Martin Jol reports a few injury doubts, but expects the team to be largely unchanged when we take on Everton at the Lane tonight.
Jermaine Jenas, Teemu Tainio, Pascal Chimbonda and Didier Zokora were unable to participate in full training sessions yesterday as a result of picking up problems in Saturday's 1-0 defeat up at Sunderland.
"We've got a couple of knocks and a few players who couldn't train on Monday," revealed Martin. "Jermaine has a back problem, while Teemu doesn't feel 100 per cent. Pascal only did the warm-up and Didier didn't train.
"So there are a few little worries, but the boys want to play and put things right."
Michael Dawson remains a doubt, while not in contention are Ledley King, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Lee Young-Pyo, Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon (all knee).

Why? Are you saying those players are going to play the same way in every game? All players have good or bad games. If they have a bad game it doesn't make them bad players. It's not ability that was the issue it was application

It would be great to see Routledge given a proper chance, with Lennon injured. Lennon only got in because Wayne was injured after the Pompey game at the beginning of 2005/06 season, so now Aaron's out, Jol should give Routledge the chance to do what he did so well for Palace the other year

I will always back any player that pulls on the Tottenham shirt for the 90 minutes while they are playing. no question. I cannot, however, understand any Tottenham fan who defends Gardner. If only he could defend as well as some of you defend him! I constantly read comments on here praising his loyalty and the fact that he is a valuable squad member. I'm all for loyalty and a good attitude but TG is nowhere near good enough. He never has been, he never will be. He's worth a goal or a penalty per game to the opposition. He makes me panic, he makes his teammates panic. When he went to head a ball six inches off the ground against Sunderland I winced...give me Rocha any day of the week..please, my heart can't stand 90 minutes of TG

Gardner struggles because he does not do the basics. He ball watches and does not pick up the runners behind him, hence the goal that Chopra scored.....never mind that he missed a simple clearance header. Stalteri should not have allowed the player to turn him inside out either. I just wonder what Martin sees and what we see when we watch the games. We are not all experts and some like myself actually play the game but I seriously wonder what goes on inside his head. Don't get me wrong, I think he's probably the best manager we've had in years but tactically he's not up there with the best of them. Why did he not play Taraabt and Rocha instead of Gardner and Tainio? Speaking of Tainio, is he made of glass? He plays one game, then he's injured for two or three matches, then he plays again, picks up a knock and is out again........

I am also a fan of MJ but spiritless, passionless away peformances have to be partly his responsibility. The midfield looked awful when announced - no width, no creativity etc. And so it proved.
In some ways last Saturday will be be even harder to take if we get a top performance tonight.

Exactly! Even if Taarabt goes the whole game and only creates one or two good opportunities, he still will have accomplished more than any of the midfielders did vs Sunderland.

Incredible how someone can be equally naive and blinkered.
Gardner struggles because he does not do the basics. He ball watches and does not pick up the runners behind him, hence the goal that Chopra scored.....never mind that he missed a simple clearance header. Stalteri should not have allowed the player to turn him inside out either.
I agree that Gardner sometimes is more of a spectator on the pitch, but Chopra's goal was not his fault. All three of our other defenders share the blame. Stalteri for allowing the pass to be made, Kaboul for not going in to help Stalteri and mostly Chimbonda for not closing in on Chopra. Gardner fought for the header before the ball reached Chopra with his counterpart (can't really remember who), but they both missed the ball, so it fell to Chopra. Tony did cause a scare in the first half, when he totally missed the easy clearance as you said. In my opinion though, Gardner is not good enough. He is loyal, yes, and he can run pretty fast, yes. But that's it. For a lad of his height, he's terrible in the air. He also seems to have quite poor understanding of the game and that combined with a low awareness level leads to him losing his man repeatedly. Raw pace doesn't help you if your reactions are slow and your first couple of steps are also slow.
Why did he not play Taraabt and Rocha instead of Gardner and Tainio? Speaking of Tainio, is he made of glass? He plays one game, then he's injured for two or three matches, then he plays again, picks up a knock and is out again........
Tainio was coming back from injury (no surprises there). That's the reason he was subbed off at Sunderland and that's propably the reason why he didn't train. Nevertheless, I think Jol will start with an unchanged midfield.

About the sunderland game you could see the goal

show me another team in the league that finds it easy to break down a packed defense, and hard working midfield? ManU you might have said, before Reading proved the lie in that.
Yes we struggled to break these teams down. No, we were not exceptional in that regard, many other teams failed to break them down also.
At the end of last season we showed that we can break them down when we play well.... we simply didnt play well... that is the problem.
All this tactics and stuff hides the fact that the team simply didn't play well. You may argue that it was compounded by the tactics, but I don't care what tactics you play, if the players dont perform on the day, you wont win against commited premiership oposition... and that is what happened. We had the personel on the pitch to win, but they didn't play well enough. You really need look no further than that for reasons for the result.

If the team is the same as Saturday, then i'm immensly concerned, because Stalteri against the class act that is Mikel Arteta is sure to give the packed masses kittens. If Ross Wallace a championship player can make him look like a twat in the final minute of stoppage time, than Arteta is sure to run him ragged all night please Jol play Rocha instead. By the way Jol should of never let Charlie Daniels go to Orient on loan while we are without our first three left-back where is the sense in that.

Then I remember we're playing Everton who doubtless will play 4-5-1 try to catch us on break etc - and then I get depressed again and then I think no - let's go for it anyway

About time we gave Bent a regular place in the starting lineup, that will put a spring in Berb and Keano's step when they realise they are not shoe-in picks. Play the two big fellas up front with Keano on for Berbs in the last twenty five.
Give Hudd and Taarabt a start with Boateng coming on for whoever is worse just after half time. Zoko and Steed if fit for the other two places.
Kaboul and rocha in the middle at the back, chimbs and start with tone at LB with the threat of Salty to come on after a half if he doesn't look up to it.

I gather from those two posts that you don't think either Gardner or Stalteri are good enough to play LB & Rocha should play there. With that in mind & bearing in mind that Dawson is by no means guaranteed to be fit to play, who are you proposing we play at CB alongside Kaboul? If RicRoc's at LB & you don't rate TG or Salty, that doesn't leave many options. That wasn't me trying to have a go or nowt, I'm just curious as to what your thoughts are.

SelbYido personally mate even though it's now written with hindsight i would never play either Gardner or Stalteri for the club again, as they are beyond hopeless. Indeed they are both so inept and rubbish i would let them go on a free as they put a burden on our wages. So then to answer your question i would play Rocha at left back despite our alarming injury crisis, then play young Dervite and Huddlestone at centre half. Huge preassure admittley seeing both are young and one is more accustomed to playing central midfield, however seeing he started his career playing there for Derby he could do more than a reasonable job which is more than could be said for the joke that is Anthony Gardner and Paul Stalteri.
