View Full Version : Welcome To The All New Spurscommunity
It's done, we've moved!
I'll start of by saying this is all going to be very different and it is going to take some getting used to so please give us a chance.
The main reason we moved was because our old software just couldn't handle how busy it got on here. We didn't have a choice so saying how you preferred the old site isn't helpful as we all loved it but it really had to go and I'm sure in time you'll all love this one just as much.
The main difference with how we're going to work is that the old comments system is gone and any front page news is now tied into the forums. It had to be done like this as the old comments system was killing us resource wise. I'll explain soon how to post news and comment on it but please everyone, be patient, this change isn't going to please everyone overnight but I'm very confident that this is for the best and that anyone who disagrees will come around eventually.
There's still lots of stuff I need to add so please don't start pointing out missing things (smilies, avatars, etc) just yet. If you do see a genuine problem or error then please let us know.
The list of new features is massive so for now I'll just point you towards the obvious one, the new arcade game system located through the link at the top of the forums.
If you have any questions or problems then please go here: http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=172799#post172799

Truly rubbish... fair enough you have your reasons and perhaps you couldn't do it any other way, but this is shit...
There's nothing here, it's like swapping a newspaper for a comic and going there you are, it's almost the same, you've got words and everything...
Tell me I'm wrong. Show me where the conversations are, the debate, because I can't for the life of me find it!!

I think if I was Rob I'd give up after receiving that.

I'm not quite sure what you're missing but I'm happy to talk about it.
You're unhappy because of the "comments" system that was on the front page is now part of the forums?
Or is it the whole look and feel of the thing? The comments need to be in the forum but I expect us to be able to get the actual site looking quite similar to the old one from your perspecitive given time.

I think this is one of those situations where you can't keep everyone happy, for whaever reason they've sacrificed the front page in favour of the forums where I'm sure the majority of the traffic is, but like I say I've had a look around for the kind of stuff you get on the front page and just found a bunch of people chatting about not a lot.
It reminds me of a lot of sites for people really into chat rooms and whatnot... nothing wrong with that, but it's a scene, like a club or something and it doesn't suit everyone.
I guess I'm just really disappointed. Something I enjoyed is no more and in its place is something that's never really appealed...
Maybe it'll change and get a different flavour, but i can't see it because I expect most of the people on here like the flavour just the way it is!!
Rob
Where are the thread headers?
The Articles?
The News?
And all this Avatar, member ranking , banner stuff...?
There was a reason why the two parts of the site were seperate and a reason why people generally posted in one area or the other

Sloth I appreciate you taking the time to write all of that.
I know you appreciate we're at the very start but just to clear this up, the front page news will still be there, it's just in a slightly different format. It's posted in this forum as a new thread (and is approved/declined by a mod) and then it gets displayed on the front page.
The only difference is that where the comment system used to be below the post with the black and white text and quite a simply system, it now uses the forums instead.

I think we're going to get quite a few comments like this. I was once a "front page" person when I started using the site and then I saw the light and realised I could graduate beyond being a "Frode" :)
Thanks for all you're doing, Rob....

Thanks Rob, for replying, as you say I guess I'll wait and see, but what's it all about? Did the front page really take up so much bandwidth??

I dunno how much you know about computing but we use a database and when information is taken from it there are several "queries" where work is done to the database.
The front page used around 30. The forums used around 10.
When you were in a new story with comments, if ti was a big story with lots of comments it'd used somethign like 300 or more queries.
That's for each person reading it.
We couldn't cope with that, no matter what hardware we changed to.

But some people quite liked being a 'front-page' type person, frankly all this graduate business reminds me of some sort of American Frat thing.. Whatever lights your fire and all that but it's pointless pretending both parts of the site are/were the same. A lot of people love the forums but a lot of people are left cold by them.

Personally think it looks a bit spartan and impersonal. Do you not have a flashy new logo to go with the site? Can anyone knock one up? Too much space on the homepage between stuff as well. Font sizes could be 1 size smaller too - looks a bit childish with fonts that big. Look how well nested the other one was - looked far more serious and authoritative. Sloth's analogy of the comic and the newspaper, while a bit blunt, was true for me too.
It's always a bit of a subconscious shock when a website changes - we're creatures of habit. Think that we like to know where everything is, and if stuff moves about, it irks us. It's like that "I'm sure I put it there" feeling, it puts you out of your comfort zone. So maybe we're being overly critical...
I like the fact you can shrink items on the homepage and that it retains this when you log off though (sad enough to check this ;) ). Very "web 2.0"... If only you could move them around though... Gonna nark everyone off and suggest that you remove the double arrows from the skyscraper ads on there (120x600s) - don't want your click rates to fall...
(edit: kept my post count AND i'm now a senior member - gets better all the time)
Other than that, best of luck with this! Know what a pain in the backside this sort of thing can be...

Not a lot, but sounds like a good reason to me, so fair enough and i see a few of the old news stories starting to appear so I guess I should maybe start thinking about getting that humble pie out of the oven...
Display Modes -> Switch To Hybrid Mode should give you a bit of a more familar interface.

I think it has a lot of promise, the arcade etc are all nice gimmicks.
At the end of the day the content IS still the same, it's just learning to navigate through and waiting for the 'make-up' changes to take place

Exactly as LadieK said. I didn't realise this was happening today, loaded up the page and was shocked.. well more horrified by it. But I've just been clicking around and it's practically the same site, it's just instead of news comments flowing down the page it's in more of a forum style, but still the same thing. Once the aesthetics are put in place and few bugs (2 posts in forums) are cleared up can't really see it being much different. Feels clean like a reinstall of windows, not what you left behind and inpersonal but will soon get its charm... damn I can't believe I used an anology of re-installing windows!!

sorry really dont want to criticise as the change seems necersary but what a mess.............have to click in a number of places simply to see the new posts. Never been interested in Forum posting.............loved the site because all the stories there on one page with all related posts nice and easy to read underneath.
The look of the site, whilst I understand is still work in progress, is awful........font size, layout etc
People's natural reaction to change is fearful and that includes me..........but dont feel good tonight

I just want to know what davidmatzdorf thinks!
What did I do?
To deserve this?
Unlike some [sloth], I'm going to give it a bit of time to get used to it before I make up my mind.
Like sloth, I was a bit concerned at the lack of intelligent discussion upon first exploration, but I think that was just because the forum thread intended to emulate the old "front page" hadn't been set up yet or populated with any posts.
As long as we can read the articles and comment on them here without all the forum-istic nonsense, it will be OK.
Another question: I can see a selection of emoticons, but they seem to be limited to one heading the entire post. How do I insert one into my test the way I used to do, e.g., ?

First impressions are that's it's not as easy on the eye and looks too much like many other clubs' forums...Which to me is a pity, as the old SC stood out and was so much better than the many other clubs' forums.
This one's going to take a long time to get used to, but hopefully many improvements are on the way (soon?)...

How is the name under the user title selected (eg I have Frode Grodas at the mo)? Can I change it - and how?

http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/forums/profile.php?do=editprofile
Add a custom title there.
As I've said several times now, there's absolutely no way we could keep the old comment system as it used too many queries and it NEEDED to be tied into the forums.
Anything cosmetic can be changed and once we're vaguely happy with them then we'll try to get some feedback.

Thanks, I meant under the custom title - the Frode Grodas? How do I change Frode Grodas to someone closer to my credo?...
spurs_viola
28-11-2006, 02:14 AM
As it happens, the Frode Grodas has been upgraded (i guess) to Paolo Tramezzani! I can live with that, as long as it's not going to be a Jason Dozzell next...Actually, it's kind of fun (i think) to try and guess who is going to be under your title next...where some of the almost forgotten names from the past come back to cheer us up (Vinny Samways, Nicola Berti...)
- or haunt us (Gary Doherty...)?

Why doesn't my signature picture come out? Some people seem to have very large ones (pictures that is) but the size I'm allowed (if it worked) is very limited. I've uploaded and saved, the signature is ok but not the picture.
Need some help please someone ...
BTW, once I get used to the changes it will be good. Just having to adjust which gets more difficult as you get older you know.
(From one designated a Senior Member!)
PS: Was going to put something in italics - where has the control gone for italics, bold, coloured/different sized fonts, etc??
CH: You've uploaded the signature picture but not put it in your sig yet, go to your user cp and edit you signature to include it.

A lot of people love the forums but a lot of people are left cold by them.
Not sure why, they're no different to the comment system! Besides, if there's something you don't like it's up to you to change it. Don't tell us you don't like it, that doesn't help, tell us WHY you don't like it.
Rob, I think the new system is very good, I often wish websites had an integrated comment system/forum and I was actually looking for a way of doing this recently. Where did you find the system or did you code it yourself (in which case you're a very clever boy!)

It does take a bit of getting used to for the technophobes among us, but I dare say we'll manage.
This of course is just a practice comment that I'm not going to post, so now I have to click on .... oops.
