Juande Ramos is clinging to his job after Tottenham’s wretched season hit a new low in a remarkable game at Stoke City.

Spurs remain bottom of the Barclays Premier League, without a win after eight games, as the worst-ever start in their 126-year history continued with a 2-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium.

Manager Ramos had defenders Gareth Bale and Michael Dawson sent off, and also saw Vedran Corluka taken to hospital after he was knocked unconscious following a sickening clash with his own goalkeeper, Heurelho Gomes.

The Spanish boss is now under intense pressure and was even unable to say if he retains the support of club chairman Daniel Levy.

‘I don’t know whether I still have his backing,’ said Ramos.

‘You will have to ask him that.

'I speak with him when he permits. But he’s a very busy man and I don’t know if it’s possible to speak this week.

‘I’m worried because I don’t like the situation.

'It’s my job and I’m working very hard to solve it.

'Responsibility starts with me but everybody in the club is responsible whether we win or lose.

'We’re only going to change the situation by working hard.’

It remains to be seen if Ramos will be allowed to complete one year in the job after successive defeats to Premier League newcomers Hull and Stoke, but the 54-year-old found an ally in Stoke boss Tony Pulis.

He called on Levy and the Tottenham board of directors to back Ramos in view of the untidy way Martin Jol’s reign was ended a year ago.

‘I just hope the chairman, who got rid of a very popular manager before, now backs him and gives him the opportunity to turn it around,’said Pulis.

‘Let’s see a bit of character from the board of directors because the players are definitely good enough.

'He just needs a little bit of luck.

'But you have to accept it.

'We all lie in that same bed and know the rules that we work and live by.

‘If results aren’t going well there’s going to be pressure on you and there’s no hiding the fact they’re in trouble.’

Following Saturday’s coin-throwing incident in Portsmouth’s game at Aston Villa, referee Lee Mason is expected to report that one of his assistants was also the target for an object thrown from the crowd after he awarded the first of Stoke’s two penalties and showed Bale a straight red card for bringing down Tom Soares in the16th minute.

Danny Higginbotham scored two minutes later after the wind kept blowing the ball off the spot and, although Darren Bent equalised, Rory Delap scored the winner seven minutes after half-time.

Soares was also fouled for Stoke’s second spot-kick — missed by Ricardo Fuller — before Dawson was shown a straight red for his lunge at Mamady Sidibe in added time.

Dawson would normally expect a three-game ban for dangerous play but that may be extended to five because he refused to leave the field immediately.

A total of 11 minutes of added time was mainly down to injuries to Corluka and Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, who needed five stitches in a cut under his right eye after a collision with AlanHutton.

Corluka was caught in the head by Gomes’ knee and was carried to an ambulance after receiving lengthy treatment on the pitch.

The Croatian later had X-rays to his head and neck but he had regained
consciousness and did not seem to be seriously injured.

Hmmmm i hope thats just Ramos's poor grasp of English otherwise that line sounds as though Ramos and Levy dont get on.

A little off topic, but do you guys think there was malice in Dawson's challenge? For me, he won the ball, his momentum took him through and caught the player. I thought by the letter of the law a tackle NOT from behind that won the ball was legal?

That was a straight red mate, got what he deserved. Studs up and very vicious.

That's the worst thing about this game - Losing was bad enough, but now we have lost three, yes THREE first choice defenders to suspention/injury.

Dark clouds indeed.

Oh, how I miss Steed and Ghaly.

Ramos is worried...he's not the only one! We are totally useless, I can really see us going down, the next four games could quite easily see us still with 2 points and half way to being out of the UEFA Cup.

Who would object to getting a man, known for getting the best out of his players, will get the players to fight and scrap, for thats what we need. We'll have to put up with effective football rather than fancy, but

Big Sam Allardyce anyone?

The biggest worry is not the chopping and changing of the team, i understand why he needs to do that with certain players unable to play in uefa etc, however it seems to me that we are still playing similar to when we had Keane and Berba. Basically playing down the wings and passing into the forwards rather than crossing to the forwards. With Berba and Keane, they were both creative players that can create something out of not a lot so you could pass to them on the edge of the box and more often than not they would create a goal chance.
With Bent...no chance. He cannot create his own chances and has to be handed them on a plate. Pav is no way near ready and would be good to give him a 4 week break to rest him so we can't judge him yet.
We also need to take a few shots from outside the area. Sometimes we try to walk it in the back of the net with pretty pretty football. We cannot do that with our forwards. Our goal yesterday came because of Hutton having a crack from outside the area. Bent got in on the deflection. In the friendlies a few players were having a pop from similar types of range and Bent was picking up the scraps from it!
Also, as we are having a problem with forwards maybe now ould be a time to try out a reserve player?? Whats there to lose?? Maybe their hunger is just what the team would need?
The 2nd half of the first half we played extremely well as we had a bit of confidence. If we had had a half decent forward line i think we would have scored a few more goals...but we haven't, and thats not Ramos's fault but the boards. Ramos told them to rectify that problem just before the season started so that they could get in and bed in replacements...they didn't and now we are suffering because of it!

I have to agree-Lets go down fighting and have a team afraid of a gaffer. I knew Sam from his time as manager of Eircom league team Limerick in the early 90s. Yes a nothing league but were they scarded to underperform

I think relegation would be a good thing in the long term, theres cracks from top to bottom, knock it down and build it up again.

Im absolutely gobsmacked .... Im really lost for words. I dont care who has left the club and who has joined. We are still at a higher level than the clubs we are losing too, so their really are no excuses.

The original policy of the club, with the English core gave us the respect we wanted as a club. No we are back to a laughing stock.

We need to move back four years, and like before sack the manager and leave the coach (who probably has more repsect from the players) to do the job.

Im confident that leave it to Poyet and we will survive relegation. Maybe bring in someone alongside him, but not... above him.

I wouldn't want Sam at spurs that's not going in any direction, I'd prefer to keep Ramos. If he did go, i would like to see Roy Keane at the club. He'll put people straight

This doesn't sound good does it .

I do hope Levy shows the character Tony Pulis asks for .

If we keep working hard it will come together .

agree I think if Ramos has to go I think Roy Keane would be a good realistically obtainable solution. Up and coming manager knows the EPL inside out, the winning mentality and all that - yep would work for me

If Sam Allardyce came my 24 yr season ticket would be in the bin within seconds

I believe losing Dawson and possibly corluka might be a blessing as Ramos will leave out King for the Uefa cup game.

I believe we will turn it around and yesterday was just bad luck. bale red was jusst school boy error. We are spurs we can't go down.

Someone has to be at the bottom of the table and we will turn it around. the sad thing about this is the longer it takes the harder it is to finish top 4.

Levy faces mass demo by furious Spurs fans

Simon Johnson, Football Correspondent

<!-- DO NOT MODIFY -->
Tottenham fans will launch a massive protest calling for chairman Daniel Levy to resign at their next home game against Bolton on
Sunday.
Standard Sport understands that a group of angry supporters have already organised 25,000 leaflets to be handed out at White Hart Lane before the match.
The literature calls on the company that owns Spurs, Enic — of which Levy is managing director — to sell its majority stake to new investors.
Protest organisers will ask home supporters to hold up the leaflets for the first five minutes of the match before concentrating on getting behind the team, who are now three points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League after
yesterday's 2-1 defeat at Stoke.
Head coach Juande Ramos may have guided Spurs to the worst start to a League campaign in their history, but many supporters blame Levy for their plight. It is believed the rebel fans' group — which has been newly formed — will stage further protests after Sunday, while board members are set for a hostile reception from shareholders at next month's AGM.
Many fans are also angry that the Spurs chairman has yet to axe sporting director Damien Comolli, who has been responsible for signing most of the players since he was appointed in 2005 with little success.
<!-- ARTICLE INLINE AD -->Comolli was sitting alongside Levy at the Victoria Ground, although the Frenchman's position is still believed to be vulnerable.
Levy refused to comment on Ramos's future yesterday, but it is understood that the club remain determined to stick by the Spaniard, who has three more years to run on a £4million-a-year contract.

WHL is burning and Ramos ,Levy and their co horts are fiddling. This is crunch time as we stare at relegation as a serious possibility. Who is the genius who got rid of the core of the team which finished fifth;Tanio,Marl,Chimbo and ghally.THere was steel and grit and assissts there.I hope we will turn the tide ,but Bolton are a very physical team and we don't fare well against physical teams .THat game will be determintal ,because after that it is the big four and the new rich boys Man city.

right now i feel like someone who i love has terminal cancer. what is happening to the club i love so dearly???!!!!!!

yes the comings and going at spurs was too much, and trying to squeeze every penny from deals (levy and commoli im looking at you), and players have not performed (bentley, modric have been woeful so far), but we need to get behind the team.

I firmly believe ramos is the man to take us forward!

From the players, to us fans, we ALL have a responsibilty to ensure we do not go down this season. I will be at the Bolton game on sunday, and I will do my bit, by singing my heart out and getting behind ramos and the lads, and i hope every1 does the same, we need to make the lane as intimidating as poss (like we did vs goons 5-1)

I really hope we turn the corner, and SOON.

This is simply utterly disgusting.

It would also say its an indicator that Ramos himself doesn't like Levy and is frustrated. Otherwise why would he something like this publically...?

At this rate we will be lucky to finish top of the bottom four. The botom line is: we should not be losing to teams like Hull, Stoke, Middlesboro'. With each loss the rest of the pack move further away. To even get out of the relegation zone now we need to win the next three four games and hope that the teams above us all loose the next three or four. I can't see it happening. Deep in my heart I felt that Ramos was a mistake from the start. The crap form last season after the Cup win was the writing on the wall. He may well have cracked La Liga after years as a journeyman, but lets face it, who had heard of him three years ago ? He can't hack the PL, he hasn't had the experience and he does not have the time to suss it out now.

WE lost UEFA cup not because we were second best to Seville,i think we were the better team and Ramos at that time was saved by an incompotent referee who awarded a penalty which was undeserved. I long for the big Dutchman and his great team which finished almost fourth by the sheer will of guts ,determination and work ethics. What a great motivater he was.If i had any memories to cherich ,it was that great team which scraped through to finish almost fourth

No you don't but this is Spurs! Although I was only around for the revival in the early 80's some older members of my family assure me that going down before that did the club some good (eventually), we came back with a different mentality and soon after started winning trophies again.

I'm not using this to say 'if it worked then it will happen again' because todays football climate is a lot different but the fact that it changed the mentality of everyone associated seemed to help after the barren late 70's when the underachievment was similar to now. going down and coming up again lowered expectation and allowed time for the things to be corrected. Theres a lot of fans who won't allow the club the time to build and right the wrongs (and a lot who would) but relegation leaves no choice. Going down is risky sure but we're not broke like Leeds were.

The Spurs I fell in love with hasn't been the same since Scholar took over, and from there the club hasn't been right and has stumbled along like a drunk proclaiming they will do this and do that but ultimately fall flat on there face and get laughed at. I'm sick of it.

We were one of the 'big 5' who were part of starting the Premier League and we missed a trick big time because from there we went backwards under Sugar whilst others took advantage and eventually we now have a big 4 without Spurs.

I don't even know where I'm going with this now I'm so worn down by it all I think I need a holiday!

Christ, you really have to wonder, don't you?

This type of comment, our current preformances and results, and calls for Sam Allardyce to come in really make a burden of being a Spurs fan at the moment. Sam Allardyce!!????

Also, I welcome the calls to protest at Levy at the next match. There's nothing worse than a crowd turning up and mindlessly supporting their team as prices rise and quality diminishes. Recent decision making needs to be protested - I'm not sure if I want Levy out, but he should be made well aware of the anger at how his decision-making has impacted the playing side of the club. If he doubles down on his recent approach, then we're not going to get out of our current predicament. Supporting Comolli over Jol was an horrendous error. The lack of team building at the club is brutal. You can protest this AND support the team at the same time. Strong leadership from Levy will hep us out of our slump so he has to be man enough to take the hits, otherwise he should go.

I posted several matches back that Ramos must go, probably got slated. You cannot save the season with a manager that does not speak decent English and in my belief is unable to motivate the players. I crave stability for Spurs, but would have to be stupid not to see where things are heading this season! Get someone in soon, I would even give Glenn another go, maybe Pleat for hells sake. This situation has to change soon, things are desparate!
