Sunderland keeper Ben Alnwick will join Tottenham in January, in a deal that also sees Spurs' Martin Fulop make his loan deal permanent at The Black Cats.

In addition, Sunderland will also receive a cash payment of £1m.

Hungarian stopper Fulop did not receive international clearance in time to feature for Sunderland against Wolves on Friday.

However, the 6 feet 5 inch keeper is set to be part of the squad which travels to QPR on Tuesday.

Info from Sunderland's Official Site:-

DOB: 01 January 1987
Born: Prudhoe (Northumberland)
Height: 188cm" / 6ft 2"

The goalkeeper made his mark when providing back-up to Thomas Myhre in the Black Cats' Championship-winning campaign in 2004-05, and played a number of games in the Premiership last season.

In November 2005, he enjoyed a stint as the number one goalkeeper at Sunderland, replacing Kelvin Davis, who moved on to Southampton in July 2006.

The Prudhoe-born keeper has played for England at youth level, recently making the step up to the under-21s.

Alnwick signed a new four-year contract at the Stadium of Light in August 2006.

Alnwick has an excellent reputation as a talented young keeper and would further strengthen the club's policy of buying in young English talent - for those of you upset by the recent influx of equally talented Frenchmen.

Fulop is known to be desperate for first team football, so it might be that this deal suits everyone: Fulop gets what he wants and Alnwick, playing a longer game, gets to join a Premiership club. Just speculating. Like the BBC.

Given that he's from Northumberland, which is where Alnwick is, can we assume that he pronounces his name "Annick"? Someome on the old site suggested that Mick McCarthy pronounced it that way - which he would, as he's from the same part of the world.

P.S. Hooray, an edit facility at last.

P.P.S. Why do I have Paolo Bloody Tramezzani's name under mine? Don't I get any choice in this matter?

P.P.P.S. And how many thousands of posts do I have to make before I qualify as a "senior member"?

Oh and the Paolo Tramezzani is linked to how many posts you make, the more u make the better the Spurs player you get until you reach the dizzy heights of Toda!

The player name relates to post count.

You can alter the Senior Member to say whatever you want if you go to your User CP and edit the custom title.

He's a bloody good goalie. Played against us at White Hart Lane last season and pulled out an unbelievable penalty stop from Robbie Keane. And yes, it's pronounced "Annick".

He's already played at White Hart Lane, and did pretty well, saving Keane's penalty last season. I thought the name rang a bell!

Sorry mate, looks like I was typing it at the same time as you, just a little bit slower.

The reason given for alnwick leaving sunderland is lack of first team football... He's not going to get many games at spurs for a long while.

this guy will probably be a good back-up for about a year or two but will eventually want to move on - hopefully by then that young Belgian (?) guy who we signed will be really good by then and challenge Robbo for the number 1 jersey
