ALAN HUTTON has hit back after being accused of deliberately maiming Thomas Sorensen in an ugly clash that nearly blinded the Stoke keeper.
The Denmark international needed 12 stitches in a facial cut after Tottenham’s Hutton caught him full in the face as he went for a loose ball in Sunday’s 2-1 win by Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.
Furious Sorensen, 32, was immediately subbed with blood streaming from a cut under his right eye.
Scotland international Hutton was making his first Spurs appearance of the season after an entire campaign out with a double leg fracture suffered when he was at Glasgow Rangers.
Hutton, preparing for tonight’s UEFA Cup group game here against Udinese, said: “Of course I did not go out to hurt Sorensen. I apologised at the time to him and his team-mates. And I’d like to say sorry again now.
“At first I did not even think that I had caught him but I have seen the incident again.
“What Sorensen has said leaves a wee bit of a sour taste in my mouth as it was unintentional.
“I never went out there to cut anybody and for someone to come out and say I did it on purpose is not nice.
“But that is Sorensen’s opinion and there is nothing I can do about it.”
Hutton, 23, still has a metal rod and screw in his right leg as a result of a 2005 tackle in Scotland that kept him out for eight months.
He added: “I have been in that position myself and I would never go out to harm anybody. It’s harsh for him to say I did because I have said sorry and I totally mean that.
“I wouldn’t put the blame on anybody for the tackles on me because football is a contact sport and these things happen, but I would like to say sorry again.”
Spurs boss Juande Ramos is fighting here to save his job but will ignore calls to use crocked skipper Ledley King only in Premier League games by starting with him here tonight.
Defender King has been nursing a long-term knee injury that has threatened his career and cannot play two games in a week.
Ramos said: “I decide on the morning of the game if Ledley will play but if he does start then he will need 10 days recuperation before he plays again.”
