Tottenham Hotspur have sacked coach Juande Ramos and sporting director Damien Comolli and are set to appoint Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp.

Spurs have agreed a compensation package of £5m with Portsmouth, according to the 61-year-old Redknapp.

The North London club also parted company with first team coaches Gus Poyet and Marcos Alvarez, following the team's long string of poor results.
Clive Allen will take charge of Sunday's game against Bolton. <!-- E SF -->

Redknapp said it was an offer he and Portsmouth could not turn down.

"Once Tottenham came in and once the offer was made it was difficult for the club to turn down a £5m offer for a manager," he told Sky Sports.

"The club were pleased to take it and hopefully people will remember what I've done there.

"I've got some good memories and I have had some great times there."

Spurs are bottom of the Premier League after taking just two points from their opening eight matches this season.

Ramos' last game in charge was Thursday's defeat to Udinese in the Uefa Cup.

levy is a clever cookie... its obvious he knows that our chances of winning against bolton are pretty low, hence he has bitten the bullet before the game so if we do lose then changes are already afoot thus taking the sting out of defeat, if we win then great!!
just been listening to Harry on SSN, he used to train at spurs as an 11yr old with danny blanchflower, mackay and the others of that period.. that I did not know about hangdog (do we still call him that now he's our manager?!!).
i am in shock by the events of the evening!

its a permanent position so expect a 3yr contract to be signed... im wondering if all of a sudden jamie redknapp might turn up as Harry's new no.2 as I cannot see him bringing an ex-gooner captain along..?

I agree with the fact that although we wanted stability, Redknapp is a great capture and I'm lookin forward to the (fingers crossed), Harry era. Does this mean we could see Defoe return to the club? And could we get something we've craving after in Diarra?

Wow. I was out on the piss with mates and just got tonnes of texts. I am glad Ramos has gone, I will say that. Rednapp? Who knows? I am a bit pissed and am looking forward to tomorrow. Thanks to Comolli and Ramos, they did their best with some success but we need a fresh start. This is Spurs. Wow.

Brilliant news. Hope this will finally kick-start our season. Ramos was a decent cup manager, but hopelessly out of his depth in the Prem.

Somebody explain to me how this dismal start was Ramos' fault when the club never found adequate replacements in the striker department?

I've never before been ashamed of this club until now. My club is a disgrace.

Wow I am still in a state of shock, The DOF had to go, and Ramos couldn't motivate the team, and had no idea about who to play and in what position. Harry is a proven manager who has done good at almost every club he has been, I just hope he can get us out of this dire situation we are in, If Defoe comes back it will be fantastic, Harry will sort out the dead wood, and hopefully start to get the team playing as they should be, the talent is there but the motivation is not , we have been playing like headless chickens with no leadership and no one who can sort out who wants to play for us and who wants to be a passenger, If Harry can do that I will be a veryhappy spurs fan, The time has come for certain players to stand up and be counted.

I was very drunk when I found out the news.

I sobered up immediately upon being phoned by my old housemate from uni to inform me of the happenings (he's a Bolton boy).

I though he was winding me up, and was nowhere near a tv, so I phoned my dad and told him to turn on SSN.

Ever since I have been haemmoraging a sea of emotion, happiness, sadness, excitement, dispair, it is all there. I thought Ramos was the man to take us forward, but this season has been dire. I felt that Comolli was being made a scapegoat unfairly, but he has been gotten rid of. Poyet and Alvarez, I don't give a damn about to tell you the truth. Merely bit part players. Redknapp? Probably the best man for the job, both short and long term. I'm happy to have him and I don't care about various suspicions regarding underhandedness and his way of doing things. He is proven in many ways.

Tomorrow v Bolton the atmosphere had better be amazing and every last one of us had better support the team to the full, whoever is on the pitch.

What will happen now? Will he like Jenas, like the previous two managers? What becomes of Pavlyuchenko and Modric? Is Lennon his idea of a winger, or will Bentley be more his flavour. Will we attack, will we defend, will we fight? Who comes in January? Defoe? Crouch? Diarra? C***bell?

Never a dull moment at Spurs. I have an exam on Wednesday. Oh fuck.

The circus is in town boys, so let us all enjoy the show

Wow..just caught all of this..thought Ramos would get the chop at the beginning of the week before the Uefa game. When that did not happen I was resigned to Ramos as boss for the immediate future. Amazed Levy threw them all out.

Not sure about the twitching car salesman as manager, but give him his chance. Lets not put ridiculous expectations on him. One win at a time and steady improvement is good. Hope we see some reaction from the players on the pitch tomorrow.

Amazed. I think i feel the relief of being sick after a bout of food poisoning. I have been seriously depressed and questioning football. It was beginning to ruin my life. Spurs would be the first thing i thought about when i got up and the last thing at night. This depression has lifted for one precious moment at least. Going to work was becoming unbearable as the number of people i could look in the eye became less and less.
Now I'm excited no matter the result tomorrow (almost!) This is almost all to much to take! COYS!!!!!

unbelievable. I will probably be proved wrong but right now completely fed up with our club.

We are far poorer and no further on than threeyears ago when santini left.

Levy is sriously questionable as a chairman. How can he take the poor mans mourinho and in a year turn him into the poor mans gross?

All the folks getting excited about redknapp enjoy it for the next 18 months. Then when we get near to cracking the big 4 watch levy dump himfor the next flavour of themonth.

This is all very shabby.

Oh and by the way, the extra money we made selling berbatov at the last minute is miniscule compared to the masses we paid sorting out this mess.

If levy had sorted it all out beginning of the summer we might not have been here now, and we might be a bit better off money wise too.

I feel sick tbh.

Good point to a point. I believe that the whole team is a porblem now not just the forwards. The midfield is too lightweight for me and does not work well together. Defensively we may not be letting in as many goals as last year but we are still not that good. I do agree that getting rid of two 50 goals/season goal scorers and replacing them with two 0 goals/season causes many challenges. It will be interesting to see which piece Harry trys to fix first and how.

Glad my four month out son woke me up for a feed, my little yiddo must have known.
How much has this/will this debacle cost? This must be one of the most expensive mistakes in football.
I wonder how much control Redknapp will have to get rid of the players he does not rate, ie all the expensive signings which will lose a fortune or can he turn them around ie Pav, Modric,Bentley....

£20m and counting. That doesn't include Poyet, Alverez and whether Comolli is due anything.

Ramos: £15m (£5m over 3 years)
Portsmouth: £5m

Let's face it, Redknapp is not a top class manager who will bring us glory like the days of yore. I dare say that Redknapp is only here with us to get that English sense of "give it all you get" attitude back to the dressing room. Once we do get that sense of belief back, and we return to midtable mediocrity, the vultures at Spurs will start hovering again, waiting for a few bad results and before you know it, Spurs will be eyeing another top European manager to take over. This could happen as early as next season. Mark my words.

ol arry may not the flashy big reputation manager but he's proven to be a good motivator and brings out the best of players whether it is to rejuvenate their fading careers or even unlocking the potential that was never seen.
If he could do half a decent job like he's done at pompey - maybe bring back defoe with him in january the whole team play to their potential the results will slow but surely come in naturally. COYS!

aleast he can wheel & deal in january & get us some proper men in midfield!!! might even get of some of our money back on modric & bent & pav!!! because lets face facts they cannot cut it!!!

we are in this mess because of comolli!! & his piss poor signings & ramos for being a complete waste of time!!!

Like I said over the recent years , sooner or later we have to stick with someone or we ain't never going anywhere.......
Its not supprising , when you see us play you can see what a mess it is ,but given time and the right support I think Ramos would have turned us into a class side.. A big plus, at least there was a real clear out ......
I think Harry can do a good job for us lets hope he get full reign.

Its certainly not a long term appointment.Levy and ENIC have obviously had a heart attack when looking at the finances if we went down. And under the circumstances I think it is an astute move- get in the relegation avoidance maestro and get that useless money wasting fecker Comolli as far away from the THFC cheque book as possible

WOW - excellent news!

With one action the DOF and all current coaching team have gone and we've got a manager who, left to his own devices and backed with the cash, will get us a great TEAM together.

'Arry moans quite a lot sometimes and get on your nerves a bit with it, but I've always noticed in many interviews over the years that he always loves up Spurs, so it didn't surprise me one bit that he accepted comming to us as opposed with going to Newcastle.

Now, can he bring back Defoe and also Diarra with him?

Personally I pleased. I know we are trouble of looking like idiots, sacking another manager within twelve months of the last. But you know what? We already looked like idiots. For all the ramblings of DoF, European style, Ramos needing time, new team etc etc. The points speak for themselves, or rather lack of points. Its possible that he could have turned it around, but he has had one quarter of the season already.I personally think that you need a major change to gee up the players. If you keep losing you need something different to spark them out of the rut. This could be just the tonic we need. Strangely though, I feel really sorry for Pompey.

We've exchanged a manager who couldn't speak to the BBC for one that wont.

My wish list includes Distin, Diarra and Defoe. Being Spurs we will probably sign Adams Campbell and Kanu.

Am I right in thinking that Jol's official first game was against the gooners as well?

You can share the blame for the dismal start, though strange tactical decisions and the like were solely Ramos. But the rest of Ramos incredibly poor record with Keane & Berbatov was from his own making.

I'm not pleased about getting in Harry, though I can't see what opportunity there'd have been for anyone better. And at least he knows the league. Some of the criticisms are flawed though - for a start it's a manager with a couple of bad seasons in a long career, replacing a manager with two good seasons in a quite long career.

26-10-2008, 02:05 PM
Well, have to say that I am a little saddened by this as I genuinely hoped that Ramos would be given the chance to turn things around at Bolton today and again at Arsenal during the week. Losing players like Berbatov and Keane without first finding adequate replacements, losing Hutton through injury, having the likes of Bale and O'Hara sent off, players like Gomes throwing away our UEFA cup chances during the week...

Well, can you really blame Ramos for all these things?

Still, the season was rumbling on, and in Harry Redknapp you have last seasons FA winner. He also has a reptutation for working with ex Spurs players as well as transforming the fortunes of relegation bound clubs with much less resources. In fact, Harry has been doing a lot of business with the Spurs's board over the past few seasons, so it should come as no surprise that he has been appointed. Certainly, Harry will know how to communicate and get the best out of Spur's rosta of British players.

I can see Jamie being brought in in some capacity as Harry has already mentioned that he could be a coach, although he seems more interested in working in a celebrity capacity.

Sad day for Spurs after Ramos offered much initial promise with some memorable performances against the likes of Man CIty, Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea last season.
