Goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent gave Tottenham their first win of the season over Bolton in Harry Redknapp's first game in charge.

David Bentley's pin-point cross was met by Pavlyuchenko to give Spurs the lead midway through the first half.

After the break, Bolton midfielder Gavin McCann was sent off for two bookable offences.

Bent wrapped up the victory from the penalty spot after he was fouled by goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The victory was Tottenham's first at home since they beat Redknapp's former employers Portsmouth in March and helped lift the gloom that has engulfed White Hart Lane prior to the 61-year-old's arrival, despite the club remaining bottom of the table.

Redknapp was installed as the club's manager late on Saturday after Ramos was sacked a couple of days shy of his first anniversary at White Hart Lane and he had an immediate impact as he took his place in the home dugout.

With just two points from their previous eight games, Tottenham fans have had little to cheer about of late but Redknapp was given a rapturous reception as he was introduced to the supporters prior to kick-off.

The home supporters had further reason to cheer with the inclusion of Ledley King for the second game running and the Spurs captain finally appears to have put his injury troubles behind him.

The fans' new-found optimism seemed to transmit to the players on the pitch as they produced a consummate performance, but it was not all plain sailing for Spurs.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, whose performances have been called into question since his summer move from PSV Eindhoven, again looked shaky as Bolton put plenty of crosses into the box to test the Brazilian.

The visitors took a while to get a foothold in the game and a couple of speculative efforts from Jamie O'Hara and Jermaine Jenas flew wide, but Spurs soon went in front thanks to Pavlyuchenko's first Premier League goal.

Bentley, who had been very outspoken about his side's poor start to the season, provided a perfect cross from the right that the Russian headed low into corner to send the Spurs fans into a frenzy.

However, If Redknapp was wandering how big a task he was faced with then he was given a gentle reminder as Bolton nearly snatched an equaliser after half an hour.

Some shambolic Spurs defending resulted in Gomes and Ledley King colliding before the ball fell to Kevin Davies whose hooked effort back across goal drifted just wide.

Gomes was again at fault as he came to collect a Bolton cross and fumbled with the ball falling to Johan Elmander whose shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by King.

Not to be outdone, Jaaskelainen fumbled a seemingly innocuous cross at the other end into the path of Tom Huddlestone who fired over from six yards.

Gomes continued to give Spurs cause for concern as the Brazilian looked less than assured every time Bolton hoisted a ball into the box and this appeared to be the visitors' most likely avenue for an equaliser.

But their task was made all the more difficult 10 minutes after the break as McCann was given his marching orders after picking up his second booking for a late tackle on Huddlestone.

Tottenham looked to make their man advantage count and almost immediately went further ahead, but Luka Modric shot straight at Jaaskelainen.

Another hapless punch clear from Gomes fell to Fabrice Muamba whose attempted lob drifted over but it was Spurs who looked the more likely to grab their second.

Substitute Bent, on for Pavlyuchenko, raced onto Modric's through ball but saw his shot saved by Jusskelainan.

However, after Modric saw his shot brilliantly saved by Jaaskelainen, Bent was adjudged to have been hauled down by the Finnish keeper and he coolly slotted home the penalty.

Tottenham continued to threaten, but could not find a third and after J'Lloyd Samuel drilled a late effort wide for Bolton, Modric was again denied by Jaaskelainen.

I agree with Modric as man of the match, but Huddlestone was a very close second.

important result but Wednesday and Saturday scare the shit out of me........a very poor Bolton side caused absolute havoc at times albeit most of it of our own causing particularly Gomes who is fast becoming a worrying liability.

Modric miles and away the best player, King outstanding, Bentley was good. Jenas didnt disappointment me by showing Redknapp just what a waste of space he is.

As attacking force we remain woeful.

Just got back from the game, it was a fantastic relief and a good performance though we really only looked comfortable when they had ten men (wrongly in my opinion). It was as if we had a huge weight lifted from our shoulders and any cancerous poision or more likely lack of clarity, confidence and communication had diminished.

I don't know how much difference Harry himself had but in patches, especially at the end, we started to play the football this team is capable of; one touch passes, running onto balls, playing with flair and skill and quickness as Lennon, Bentley (minus pace), Huddlestone and Modric are capable of doing. Some passes didn't come off, some final balls were there and some shots went wide of the target but the desire, fight and confidence was back.

Defensively we were fine not including Gomes but we seldom are not sans King. His presence is just a lifeline and I hope that now he will play as many league games as possible. Only when Gomes was getting treatment did he seem to feel his knees a little but he was regal. We should have pushed out a little more but we dealt with their crosses (when Gomes didn't come crashing in like a bull) and Corluka was excellent too. He hasn't got much credit here this season but for me, at centre back, he is superb.

Just a word for a few individuals that stood out for good and bad;

Assou-Ekotto, I thought he wasn't good enough but today defensively and offensively he was tremendous. His final choice of pass was often wrong but he attacked as well as Bale has all season and defended resolutely and without error. He also outmuscled Davies on many occassions.

Modric, He was probably our best player. I have not agreed when people call him 'lightweight' and 'not good enough'. He is most certainly talented and his play leading up to the penalty was majestic but he doesn't get barged off the ball as much as people say and wins it back well. He was excellent at short crisp passes and belongs in the centre in an advanced role.

Huddlestone, It was good to have him back. For me, no one strikes the ball more smoothly for us. His effortless passes and powerful shots are excellent and he needs to regain that confidence because when he is on song, some of his passes are indefensible and his shots unstoppable. He also showed fewer signs of the infamous immobility or friendly giant soft tackler. He got stuck in well.

Jenas, He was awful. He didn't shoot when he should have, he lost the ball, he failed to even attampt any penetrative passes and was neither one thing nor another in the centre of midfield. He can do much better but if Modric, Huddlestone and Zokora play to their potential he will have to work hard to stay in the team.

Gomes, What was he on? He was an almost caricature of himself today. I like that he comes for the ball, I like his throws and I fear his kicking but they were all on steriods today. He should come for crosses he has a good chance of getting and he should punch or catch not flap; and punch to the sides. He should only throw the ball into space on the wings. He should play the ball short if something is not on.

I am really happy with Rednapp and confident we can stay up and move on. This game was to all intents and purposes the must win of must wins considering our next games. Great atmosphere today and I loved the Defoe chants. For Xmas I want him and a fit Ledley please.

It was a strange game, all of the weaknesses we have with the balance of the squad were still very evident but we managed to play with enough freedom and self belief to win the game. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I noticed that Huddlestone was played in the attacking midfield role and JJ more of defensive one, and despite a few howlers from both (it's strange people only seemed to notice JJ's), they did well enough to control the game. On the negative side with JJ so deep and the Hudd so slow I though we struggled to get bodies in the box to support Pav - who had a good game for us. Bentley looked a proper player today as well and could have had a shout for MOM.

Our right side did look so much stronger than the left, BEA looked shaky defensively but ok going forward but, in my view O'Hara looked jobbing rather than penetrating (and a little heavy?).

I'd expect some of the 3 main absences to come back on Wednesday, Lennon, Zok and Bent are also our 3 quickest players and we are going to need some pace on the break against the scum.

i was happy with that, and it felt great to leave the lane not feeling ashamed.

it is well known that i dislike him, but i thought jenas was better than you make out today. he made a few important tackles and carried the ball from defence to attack a few times. barring that one very lazy pass in the first half which nearly cost us, i thought he was adequate.

huddlestone however, was majectic int he centre. and modric, playing as just a number 10, in the whole, between the midfield and pavlyuchenko/ bent, really turned it on, especially in the final half an hour.

bentley had by far his best game and my my what a paech of a cross. that aside, he was very neat.

o'hara i thought added a lot of heart and bite to the midfield and protected ekotto well.

ekotto meanwhile should keep his place because, one poor pass aside, he was superb, while bale has been poor of late.

hutton is just a great player. i lose count of how often he carries the ball far far out of defence.

corluka is getting better every game and the mans intelligence on the ball is plain to see. i worry that maybe he lacks the necessary aggression to be a cb but he did very well against a very physical attack today.

king was a giant and i hope his knee holds up and he can play both games in the next week because even in his current unfit state (he doesn't train really afterall) he is still the best around. A touch of pace has deserted him but he has more than enough nouse to deal with that and I don't think there is any better centre half.

pavlyuchenko looked good until he took a small knock. He scored a good headed goal, he held the ball up well, was quick and strong and he showed some flashes of real skill as well.

gomes was so poor and clearly has lost all his confidence, and if he doesn't sort himself out we may well see a new goalie in january. however, i have faith in him as he has shown a lot of ability so far, and i hope that the fact that he got away with it today and kept a clean sheet goes some way to helping him develop a bit of self belief again, because we've all seen what a knock to the ego can do to a class keeper, haven't we now?

Bent and Lennon came on and both did their job very well, which was, essentially, to stretch out the game. Lennon beat his man every time, though the end product was lacking, and he really had the bit between his teeth yet again. Bent could have done better after Modric superbly put him through, but he was clever enough to follow Modric's shot and win us the penalty, which he dispatched with aplomb. 4 goals in 9, it isn't bad at all considering how few we've been scoring, and i know one is a penalty while another went in off his arse, but top goalscorers get goals by all means and manners, off their knees and shoulders and all sorts. Right now he deserves to keep getting opportunities to impress because he is taking them.

And just one last note, I thuoght that in parts (not throughout admittedly) our support was magnificent.

How ironic that in the very first match under a new manager we suddenly get the lucky breaks which just wouldn't go our way earlier on. If we had the valid penalty kicks awarded to us v. Wigan, Hull, Portsmouth we could have had possibly 6 points more before today, and obviously more confidence and less pressure. And having one of the main players from opposing team sent off early in 2nd half just when they are pressing for an equaliser helps a lot too - but has not happened to Spurs while Ramos was there this season.

And just as expected, the same players who couldn't bother to put in a real effort and play some cohesive football under previous coach, suddenly do just that in the first game under a new manager who they know will look to make personnel changes as soon as he has a chance. I wish they didn't get any bonuses for this win, as it was clear they underperformed pathetically prior to that; but of course they would be expecting their not-so-small sweeterners now that they finally actually tried to do their job properly.

i hear ye buddy, and was thinking the same thing. Thats modern football players unfortunately. Ramos was not solely to blame for our season so far but he MUST have made some costly mistakes in his time. The players didn't seem to support him anymore so there must be reasons for it.

Rumour is that he wanted to be sacked as he knew it wasn't working out. It worked out well for him either way so I don't feel any sympathy for him. All my sympathy left with Jol. Looking back i wish Commolli had been sacked before last season and Jol given a proper managers role. It broke my heart when he was sacked like he was (my only real gripe with Levy) and I knew the dream was gone for at least a few yrs.

Harry will be good for us short term but I think managing a 'big' club will give him headaches like never before. I think Portsmouth only loaned him to us though they don't realise it yet. By the end of next year i predict he'll be gone - whether spurs have their shit together by then will be anyone's guess.....

The highlights of the game for me were - Modric, obviously.

Bentley - suddenly seems able to cross a ball again

Pavlyuchenko - seemed to be the slowest player ever when he first arrived suddenly was sprinting for balls and getting there first! Don't know what has happened but I like it. He was very skillful and assured on the ball. We should concentrate hard on set pieces because with his aerial ability we should be able to threaten any team from corners and free kicks. This is or was distinctly lacking from our game before and teams that can't score from open play tend to become more dangerous from thse so why can't we?

Assou Ekotto - another speed merchant, I remember seeing him surging through the midfiled and thinking "who's that?" It's like having a new player. He was very good making only one mistake from what I remember.
