Hertha Berlin's playmaker Yildiray Basturk has indicated for the first time that, following interest from Tottenham Hotspur, he could be interested in a move to the Premiership when his contract expires at the end of the Bundesliga season.

Source: The Guardian

The Turkey midfielder, who has spent his entire playing career in Germany, admitted yesterday: "At 28 years of age it could be time to seek a fresh challenge elsewhere. I've always thought about playing abroad . . . and the Premiership could certainly be interesting.'

Tottenham scouts were spotted at Hertha's game at Energie Cottbus last month, when Basturk was forced off after 28 minutes with a calf injury.

Despite initially playing down a possible move - insisting he was "sure they [Tottenham scouts] were here to look at someone else" - his change of heart will certainly be of interest to Martin Jol, who will be acutely aware of the prospect of rekindling Basturk's productive association with Dimitar Bebatov that served Bayer Leverkusen so well in 2004.

But Tottenham will face stiff competition for his signature. Hertha's coach, Falko Götz, is desperate to hold on to the club's 2005-06 player of the year. He insisted no formal enquiry has been made and added: "Here we can offer him a great city and a club with a great future with whom he has been so far entirely content. Not only that but here he is a team leader. And he knows that."

However, Basturk's apparent wish to leave for new challenges, coupled with Hertha's reported record loss of €13.9m [£9.4m] in the past year, seem to indicate that a big-money Premiership offer could be too good to turn down.

After playing in the Champions League final in 2002 with Leverkusen, Basturk has become increasingly frustrated with the lack of European football at Hertha, the Berlin side having been knocked out in the first round of this season's Uefa Cup by Denmark's Odense BK.

playmaker? So a central midfielder i'd imagine. Hhmmmm. all i can say is this must be unsettling to our current players. but if he is going to be an improvement then these hard decisions have to be made.

he is left footed, normally plays through the middle, but i think he can play on the left.

I am concerned that he is an injury-prone CM, but I am more concerned that his surname will be too easy for opposing fans and tabloid hacks to make fun of.

this is the kind of signing we would have made under francis or gross ala moussa saib

No thanks. Maybe if it's a swap deal for Murphy.

It's embarrassing to see him in a THFC shirt. The sooner we get rid, the better.

I personally dont rate murphy very highly anymore - he is quite lathargic, for us, coupled with him turning us down a couple of years back, not playing well in most of his (limited) opportunities and his age, I would wish for him to be transferred.

However, he is NOT embarrassing in the slightest. Stuart Nethercott was embarrassing.

It's clear that Murphy is a better player than Nethercott. I was there when we played Nethercott at left back in an FA Cup semi final because Gerry Francis wouldn't give a debut to our reserve left back (who at the time was Jamie Clapham, who is also much better than Nethercott). But I digress.

The reason I dislike Murphy is not that he turned us down two years ago - it was his reasons for doing so. I don't want hypocritical xenophobes playing for Tottenham. I mean, he wouldn't play for Santini but he would for Jol? I'm sorry, but for me the distinction between the two is small at best.

If he'd said at the time that Charlton had the most chance of winning silverware and that that is why he joined them - ok. Debatable but ok. When he realised his mistake he jumped ship. But he didn't say that. He chose another path.

We make fun of the Goons for having drunkards, junkies and (alleged) rapists in their team. Yet I wont turn a blind eye about Murphy.

Maybe my viewpoint is too strong but that's how I feel. He is not a person i want associated with Tottenham. His ability doesn't come into the equation (though it helps that we don't need him anyway). That is why he's an embarrassment (in my opinion).
