Martin Jol has warned Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Portsmouth that striker Jermain Defoe "is going nowhere" in January.

Defoe, 24, has not been a regular this season but has scored five in his last four starts, and reports have linked him with a move when the transfer window opens.

However, Jol is determined to keep Defoe at the club as they remain in all the cup competitions and are looking to climb the Premiership following an indifferent start.

The Dutchman said: "Jermain is going nowhere. I'm not going to sell someone who is playing such a crucial part to our challenge in the Carling Cup, UEFA Cup and Premiership.

"There is always speculation about Jermain. The transfer window will come up again in a month's time and he has already been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Portsmouth."

Jol has Dimitar Berbatov in fine form at the moment, while Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane was preferred to Defoe for the recent win over Chelsea and matches in Europe.

With the club playing eight games in December, starting with Saturday's clash against rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Jol may need to rotate his strikers, particularly as Mido has a groin injury.

"Jermain is very important to us. There is all this talk about him not playing regularly and yet he has started six of the last nine games," Jol said in the London Evening Standard.

"Robbie has only started three games in the Premiership lately but no-one is talking about him wanting to go. Jermain can do nothing about it.

"If he was scoring it would not be an issue, but, as he hasn't got many goals, people are saying he's lacking in confidence because he's not playing. But they are not checking the facts."

Meanwhile, Spurs officials believe the congested fixture schedule is a benefit to the club as well as pleasing for the fans.

"It benefits attracting players to the club and keeping players at the club," said executive director Paul Barber on Sky Sports News.

"The fans want to see the club being as successful as possible, playing in as many competitions as possible, and this season they are getting it.

"We've got four games in 15 days in December, that's the kind of pressure the fans want and we're all enjoying it.

"It's impossible to put pressure on Martin, every professional sports team is competing to win and we're no different."

Good to hear. I can see him maybe going in the summer, but no way will he be sold in Jan.

I was wondering when the club was going to squash this rubbish. looks like Man U and Liverpool will have to wait until the end of the season, and then only if the price is right.

Time to move forward with our season.

I think that until we are solidly in the top four these rumours of 'unsettled' strikers who are not 'regulars' will keep coming. I hope JD stays as he is still a young 'un and has tons of skill and more potential and works hard.

good to hear but im not so sure that defoe will want to stay if man u come in for him, not many players turn them down, he might think if he aint gonna be a regular he may as well do that at man u and play some champ league and have more chance of winning tropheys

i have a slighty suspicious mind about all these rumours. I fee as though there is a small possbiliy that they are coming from defoe's camp to put pressure on jol to play him more regularly and in particular in the derby on saturday

now that jol has come out and said he is going nowhere and that he is important to the side i feel as though he would be leaning towards defoe for a starting place.

if jol doesn't start defoe he will be asked in his post match interview the same questions

Let's be realistic, every club and player has his price. We weren't going to sell Carrick but did - for a ludicrous fee, imo.

I can't see us letting JD go, definitely not without a replacement, but if the money starts edging towards the £15m mark, Spurs are going to take it, I think.

I think you're right. Would definitely consider a bid above 15 mil.

It's about time we publicly said Defoe is not for sale after these latest crappy rumours and let the Man Utd's and Liverpool's of this world that our players aren't there for the taking. We are Tottenham and we are building.

Firstly Defoe is a quality, young English centre forward who given the chances will score alot of goals.
Secondly in todays market who are you going to replace him with without shelling out a ridiculous transfer fee. Sometimes the grass isn't always greener.

Spot on with all the comments, agree with all said by Jol and Barber...

Now for all the other clubs and the tabloids, ESPECIALLY the tabloids to understand it

I agree with an above sentiment, that Defoe is actively in support of these intimations and insinuations in the tabloids. He seems to have beneifitted.

Would a player do that? Would Defoe?

Cant honestly see JD leaving any time soon! He loves it at the lane, you can see it every time he scores! Wouldnt mind if an offer of around 15 mil came in but not to a top 4 club.

Great comments. Using fact to back up remark - wonder if that baffled the journo?

With all the games coming up over the next couple of months everyone will be needed to come out the other side on the up. We can really now make a push - an exciting month lies ahead.

i personally wouldnt sell him but if someone offered 15m plus and defoe wanted to go then id go get lua lua for half of that, nut im sure defoe doesnt want to go and MJ knows that there is goin 2 be games where he is gona play robbie and others to play jermain

last season we played 40 games, 38 prem and 1 league cup and 1 FA Cup. this season were goin 2 play 38 prem, already played 5 uefa cup games and definately have 3 more comin up, we have a fa cup game at least and were gona play 3 league cup games at least and so all our strikers will get about the same amount of games apart from mido as he does like his injuries

I'd be happier if Defoe himself said he wanted to stay. His agent is quite fly, and agents don't get anything unless a player is sold. Incidentally, considering how well Man U are doing, was Carrick such a bad piece of business for them?

I also don't believe Defoe particularly wants to go, his interviews always seem to show he is committed to the club. As for a big offer its tricky, do you sell to a big four club - who we are trying to catch up with, or do you sell to a lesser club - who are trying to catch up with us. Better to sell abroad if at all, or maybe a big four club where he will remain on the bench anyway.

Personally I'd much rather keep him, he has not reached anywhere near his full potential yet.

I may be mistaken, but the agents DO get something each month which comes from either the club's or player's bank account, transfers are considered to be their bonus payment

If it's anything like the music business, agents get an agreed percentage of the client's gross earnings.
