RUMOURS
TOTTENHAM boss Martin Jol will make a January transfer move for West Brom defender Curtis Davies.
Source: The Mirror
The Dutchman wants to strengthen his defence and needs another top class centre-half to provide competition for Ledley King and Michael Dawson.
Spurs have been tracking the highly-rated Davies for months and made a summer move for him - but the ex-Luton defender had his sights set on moving to Arsenal.
However, Arsenal ended up getting William Gallas as part of the Ashley Cole deal with Chelsea and that left Davies stuck at West Brom.
West Brom demanded £8million for Davies but now they are struggling in the promotion race they may have to bow to pressure and sell.
Baggies boss Tony Mowbray admitted yesterday he may be ready to part with Davies.
He said: "We are trying to put the building blocks in place for the long-term success.
"If we are going to lose a star player then while it is difficult, if the team benefits longer term, that is what is important."

Think he would be a good signing so long as we don't pay over the odds for him - no more than £5 million IMHO

Yes please.
He´s better than Gardner and Davenport and would be a definite improvment to the squad.
Plus, if the unthinkable happens and either King or Dawson leave (a la Carrick) then we need replacements in place.

I think that as Robson has left since the last transfer window it would be a good time to temp him away. He should feel know loyalty to Mowbray.

I don't think we need another CB at all. Davenport must be probably the best 3rd choice centre back around at the moment, and on top of that we have Gardner (who admittedly will probably be gone soon) and Dervitte who looks a real quality prospect and will be depressed greatly at moving down the pecking order.
I say keep yr money in yr pocket!

Davenport a quality replacement? You must have been watching different matches to me at the start of the season. The guy is honest, but never going ot be top class.
Would you really feel confident with Davenport or Gardner if we had a big match against the scum at the end of the season to decide 4th place again, and Ledley went down with his habitual knee knack?
Davies has got loads of pace, strength and is good in the air, could give Dawson and King a real fight for their places if we get him. Wenger and Jol are shrewd judges of a player after all...

We absolutely need another CB, I quite like davenport, but Gardner does not count as backup, he is injured ALL the time and is prone to making mistakes - I have always rated him highly but his injuries have got on top of him and we should sell him. I would love us to sign Micah Richards as he is probably better than Davies (and 3 years younger) but all the top clubs are after him. However, to have Davies as backup with Davenport/Dervitte coming through would be a young and healthy supply of CBs for the four competitions we are currently in.

would be a great addition if we were to see gardner/davenport leave. Im not very happy at the moment when davenport or gardner replace king or dawsome. They simply aren't good enough for spurs imo

I'm not sure of Davies' quality but I don't see Gardener or Davenport as the sort of backup CBs we need to challenge for the Champions League spot. Gardener looks like he's going and it will be hopefully Richards or Davies to replace him in January

as far as 'backup' defenders go, davies is as good as we're going to get. we aren't able to get in a top class defender because we already have daws and ledley.
davies is certainly better then gardner and davenport, so providing we dont pay over the odds for him im all for us going for him personally.
i can already see this being one of the long-running transfer stories of the jan transfer window.

but what people are overlooking is dervitte! in about a year he's going to be pushing Dawson and Ledders all the way

Not in all cases, Staltieri, LYP a right footed left back, Rasiak?

Hmmm. Not sure how realistic it is to have back up centre halves much above the quality of Davenport and Gardner. Absent injury CB's are rarely dropped or benched, so opportunities for the back up are generally limited. Like with a keeper - an ambitious talented centre half will not be happy in that role.
As for how good they need to be for us to challenge for CL: I don't think any of the current "Big 4" have any significantly better back up than us, other than a couple of excellent players who can get matches at full back as well (Gallas; Carragher).
I'm never one to turn down a new talented player. But assuming we have a limited budget, I'd rather see it all be poured into another creative midfielder or (dare I say it) left winger.

I completely agree with your comments adam. I too have rated Gardner but as you said his injuries have taken over.
Micha Richards would be better as he can also play at RB. His team mates apparently nicknamed him salmon because of his leaping ability, but it seems there may be a swap deal with him and SWP about to take place so I can't see us getting him.
But like you said Davis plus the rest of the CB's we have would be really good for both the current stage we are at and allows improvement in the future as the younger players amongst them mature.

I like Gardner and i like Davenport, i think that with a run of games Gardner is a good defender, the only thing is he is very injury prone, which is a shame. We need a good center back who can play at full back with pace and muscel and can play the ball a bit. To allow us to rest Dawson and king when need be also to play full back if needed. As they are the real problem areas for me we have everthing else in our locker except one more winger preferable left (although we do have WR)

they are talking about buying him for 8million. Fucking joke like, 8 million for a player to play on the bench when we have davenport and gardner there. crazy, save the money i say.

Yes we shouldn't spend that much on backup, but at the same time if Dawson or KING got injured for a long period we would be in the shit. It is a little bit like spending 5m on Chimbonda - I didn't want us to spend that much on a 27 year old 1 year wonder but the guy has turned out to be true class.
King is our most important most consitent player and I would not feel to comfortable with him being replaced with Davenport - Gardner shouldn't even be mentioned - he is injured all the time.

I think Davenport adequately covers Dawson - they're both similar type players - but Davies would be a superb understudy to King.
With the weight of matches we have this season and hopefully next too I think we definitely need someone who can come in and give King a rest on occasion, especially, as others have pointed out, when you consider his dodgy knee.

The word "backup" is appearing far too frequently on this thread. Who said Davies would be backup? No one from the club.
The young man has a reputation for having huge potential, just as much as Dawson did when we bought him. If the club is ambitious and aims to be playing in multiple competitions most years, we have plenty of room to accommodate three top class centre backs, more so given that King has had more than his share of long injury layoffs over the past couple of years.
We have plenty of competition between players of roughly equal ability in central midfield and plenty up front. So why not in central defence?
And I very much doubt we would pay £8m for Davies anyway, certainly not as a first offer.
But I hope the top priority for Jan is still a left winger.

C.Davies is a very talented, young CB. Iv'e not seen too much of him in the Championship, however when i have seen him for the u21's he looks really composed, assured and a quality player.
No more then 5mill, mind. We already have dorian, gards and Callum.

Davies may not be a backup. He will probably part of a squad of three centre halves and could well emerge to be a match for even Dawson.
The fact is that King has been playing injured most of the season cos Jol has no faith in Davenport, and Gardner is always pulling up lame.
To many people King is our most important player, but if Davies settles in well we could afford to rest him and let his dodgy knee heal from time to time.

I remember that King breaking his foot at Everton was a lot more influential in costing us a Top 4 spot than any dodgy lasagne. Martin Jol has probobly not forgotten that either.

Davis isn't a bad player from what i've seen, but we can do better than that . We should be looking at someone whose in Ledders class, wait a mo... are there any players who are ?
If so so then we'll have to spend a bit;I'd sooner pay good money for the elusive left winger,If one exists, mind you I've
got a great left peg,erm I shouldn't have brought up this
kackfooted subject, too many bad best left feelings.:bang:

Last season I turned up at the lane before the Man U game to find that Ledley was injured and Davenport was playing. My heart sank. He went on to produce an excellent display and I would have no problems with him standing in for either of our first choice centre backs.
Everything I have seen of him since then has backed that up.

I`m glad we`ve nearly got our squad together before all these rich blokes turned up.

8 million for a back up defender is crazy. Its more than we paid for Dawson and more than we paid for Jenas. I really think we can get better value for money elsewhere. Or if we must buy him then wait until the end of the season. I don't believe west brom will go up, they will be more desperate to sell and we'll get him at a lower price.
