Late Tottenham decision stunned Blades boss.

Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell admitted his shock to discover that Tottenham had recalled Kyle Walker just moments before the transfer window shut.

Walker was signed by Spurs in the summer along with fellow defender Kyle Naughton but immediately returned to Bramall Lane on a season-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old full-back has been a pivotal figure in the Blades' promotion bid, playing in 26 of their 28 Championship games so far this season.

Blackwell expected to have Walker's services for the remainder of the season but as the transfer deadline approached, the Blades' boss received news Walker was needed by his parent club.

"It was a late decision," he said.

"The paperwork came in 10 minutes before the 5pm deadline.

No complaints

"Tottenham were within their rights to recall him so I've got no complaints.

"It was a complete surprise - but then football is full of surprises."

The blow of losing Walker has been softened by the arrival of Nyron Nosworthy on loan from Sunderland, while Blackwell has agreed a new deal for Fulham's Toni Kallio, who was loaned to the Blades in December.

Kind of sucks we didn't give them any warning but the Hutton deal was probably struck up at the last minute so would be hard to give warning if we thought we were going to have Hutton for the rest of the season.

As a manager he sould be ready for the player to be called up. You have to have cover for the player that is being loaned to you.

I've heard good things about this lad. Let's hope he's used more than Naughton

SU signed two defenders on the same day...it may have been that Hutton's loan coincided with a concern that Walker would be getting less games.

he certainly wouldn't be getting less games, he has been a revelation this season!

What a non-story! Still, Blackwell comes across well here, I'd imagine the SSN interviewer was just baiting him to say something that he could take out of context and cause an imaginary row.

Yes, I was talking to a couple of Sheffield United fans a few weeks ago and they were telling me how good this guy is (better than Naughton, and can play both all 3 defensive positions, though better at full back)

A bit harsh calling him back last minute but you've got to look after your own interestes.

Still think, unless injury to Corluka he'll play less games than Hutton did this season though!
