Ledley King believes Younes Kaboul can become the linchpin of Tottenham's defence.

Kaboul rejoined Spurs from Portsmouth last week and could make his second debut for the club in tomorrow's match against Aston Villa.

The 24-year-old had a difficult first spell at Spurs lasting only a year before joining Pompey in 2008.

But King insists Kaboul is now a far better player.

He said: “I've spent time with him before and we spoke about him becoming a better player and concentrating.

“I'm sure that's going to happen. All young players make mistakes, especially in defence. But it's down to us as a team to nurture his talent because he has fantastic ability.

“I've seen him this season and he has done well. He can be one of the great defenders around if he works hard and improves.”

If & When King retires I hope he stays at the club and becomes a coach, he could teach these younger guys some great things.

IMO Kaboul was a victim of circumstance first time round at Spurs, thrown in too young alongside an inexperienced CB while our world-class first choice pairing were long-term injured. Kind of ironic that a player who learnt his trade properly alongside Campbell at Pompey ends up being tipped as the long term successor by the King himself :)

Yeah, part of me thinks we owe him a second shot.

Kaboul is, and always was, an immensely talented defender. He never had a chance - joining a regime that was in chaos, being thrown straight into the deep end in a new country and new league. It would have been tough on anyone, let alone a kid. Defenders take time to mature, particularly centrehalves, and we will see that it was a mistake to sell him the first time round. Thankfully one it looks like we will not live to regret.

Yep , it would be a tradgedy if that opportunity and progress was lost .

Also ironic that Spurs should benefit like this from Sol a second time around but that won't soften many on here .

I agree that we have bought back a much better player than we sold. he's certainly had to do some serious defending while at Portsmouth which should have taught him many things.

As for softening my attitude to Judas, that will never ever happen. He will always be sheer scum as far as I'm concerned and I'm sure I speak for pretty much everyone else on here.

When will the talk of Sol Campbell ever end?? Seriously, he left years ago and is on his fourth club since Spurs. Who cares that he's gone and that it wasn't done in a nice way. I couldn't care less about the man and struggle to see why we should even reference him in any context, good or bad. Let's just forget even if you can't for some reason forgive - it's not like we would have done any better had he stayed anyway!

It will never end and I, for one, am glad of that. No matter the number of clubs he goes to, or the years flying by, it will go on. Yay!!!

Just the kind of relevant, measured and thoughtful post that makes SC great.

Anyway, Kaboul does seem to have it all in his locker on paper, alhough I haven't been following him closely enough at Pompey to see how much he has improved from his first spell with us.

I wonder what it means for Woodgate long term.
