MANAGER Paul Buckle was unsuccessful in his bid to turn Sam Cox's Torquay United loan spell into a permanent move prior to the closure of the January transfer window.
Cox has made two substitute appearances at left-back since joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight ago.
The Gulls boss enquired about securing the 19-year-old's services on a permanent basis — not only for his versatility at full-back or in midfield, but also to free-up possible places for post-deadline day loan signings.
"We tried to get Sam on a permanent deal," said Buckle yesterday. "I believe he would be a great player for the club, both in the short and longer term.
"You're only allowed eight loanees in the building, and only five can take part in the 18 on a Saturday, so that makes life difficult.
"But it wasn't quite right. Spurs wanted to keep him a little bit longer, and I can understand that.
"And they understand if I have to bring in another player on loan, maybe some of those loanees might have to go back.
"I had planned on getting some permanent signings in but, even since June when we went up, it's been very difficult.
"We missed out on Russell Penn (who signed for Burton Albion in the summer for a reported £30,000) — we couldn't afford to buy him for the money that Kidderminster were looking for.
"We have missed out on an awful lot of players and sometimes people don't see that."
