Harry Redknapp described Ledley King as a player who has ‘everything' after another imperious display against Villa.

Ledley and central defensive partner Michael Dawson barely put a foot wrong up against the pace of Gabriel Agbonlahor and power of first Emile Heskey, then John Carew, as it ended goalless at the Lane.

Heurelho Gomes was only forced into one double-save against a side with so much attacking potential and Ledley's afternoon was summed up by a textbook sliding tackle as Agbonlahor made a typical burst into the box in the first half.

"Ledley's a fantastic player," explained boss Harry. "It's hard because Sebastien Bassong played so well at Leeds, but Ledley's a special player and that's why when he's fit, I play him.

"He's quick, he's powerful, he's got everything. He played against two fantastic strikers and did a great job."

Harry was delighted with the performance even though we were left frustrated in front of goal thanks in main to a gritty defensive display from a Villa team who have conceded fewest goals in the Barclays Premier League.

"I thought we were terrific, we played some great stuff," he added. "We've been in good form, one defeat in 12 and I felt we were a credit, the way we played.

"It was a good performance, everything was right but we didn't get the breaks in front of goal.

"Things are going well though. We're pushing for fourth, still in the FA Cup and we're about 18 points better off than we were at this stage last season, so that's good."

This is starting to be as annoying as the 'two points from eight games' mantra from last season. How about this Harry: one league win in 2010. Doesn't sound quite as good, does it?

Sorry mate, but that isn't the yardstick. Agreed, it is 'good', but the bar has been set at Chumps League qualification - especially when we've been in pole position to get it for most of the season. I don't think 'more points than last season' is going to cut it if we finish eighth again.

God forbid Harry for remaining positive. Everything he has said is true. You would think we were well out of the hunt for 4th place. We're only 1 point behind Liverpool, and they play away to Arsenal tomorrow night. We have a great chance to reclaim 4th spot again. We're going strong. Sure we're struggling to win games atm, but we were always going to go through a tough patch a couple of times in the season, and this is one of them.

I thought King played well against Villa, better than his previous displays. He struggled a bit against Carew at times, but not too much trouble.

The manager has to stay positive. If he didn't we may as throw in the towel now. It is his job to keep belief and spirit in the team.

One game at a time till the end of the season is the way to do it. Forget past results and future maybes and concentrate on the game in hand at all times. We can still do it if we do that.

Who set that yardstick, someone stupid? Champions league is a bonus this time. The yardstick should be improvement over last season -European qualification.

Back to the Ledley point, the important reason him and Dawson were rarely threatened is that we stifled any meaningfull supply to Ashley Young or Downing.

He has everything... except a fully functioning pair of knees.

The yardstick should be disposed of in the bin, and a metre-stick purchased from somewhere on the continent.

Metrication and all that...

He's right dagnabbit! We know that we're better than everyone below the top three this season. We've got a better side than all of them. So then why shouldn't we want 4th?! I don't think that it's unrealistic or unreasonable to want to finish 4th. I think that based on everything before 2010, we were the obvious choice for 4th, so what's changed?! A slight dip in certain player's form and the injury to Lennon. We should just about have enough time to turn it around hopefully.

And if we don't finish 4th, then I demand to finish 5th or 6th at the very least! Forget last season, it was a freak. It's all about how good we are now.

Can't believe people are giving Harry the stick, here's a manager who's been saying since the start of the season that 4th place is our goal.
Get it? He's not giving any excuses that our squad is not good enough and shit like that, he has full believe in the team and is aiming for 4th spot. GET it? HE IS AIMING FOR 4th SPOT. Not 5th NOT 6th. GET IT??????????????????

That is good enough for me and so far he has done a fantastic job. The best manager we've had for a long time.

I'm not having a go at the manager, I'm having a go at the wishy-washy fans who think that aiming high is expecting too much.

Champions league is a bonus this time.

Possibly, but who should get it instead? Villa, who we have murdered both times we have played them this season? City, who we caned at the Lane, or Liverpool who have their worst team in years and against whom we have shared the points. Are any of these better than us?

My point is simply that we have been in the top four for just about all of the season, and we should stay there. Not losing games gets you relegated in this league; you have to win them. Only one defeat in twelve is a smokescreen to disguise a lack of victories.

You may be satisfied with Europa League qualification. In view of where we have been for most of this season, the management should view it as a failure. So the message should be 'we have to do better' and not 'aren't we doing well'.

I think Liverpool or ManCiteh (That 'caning' was unexpected and prolly wont happen again) will get it. So you believe the board should sack HR if we dont get 4th?
In that case we'll will forever be sacking managers and we would rightly be hammered by the press.

Two things:

1. I don't really give a fuck who you think will finish fourth.

2. I never said, implied, or inferred that the club would, should, or might sack Harry Redknapp.

When you read posts properly you might be qualified to comment on them. Just so you (might) get it, I'll spell it out. Praising 'only one defeat in twelve games' masks the fact that we have dropped points all over the place and leads to satisfaction with the performance as an end in itself. This reduces or negates the obvious requirement to improve and add to the one (repeat ONE) win this year, and inevitably leads to the usual result: failing to achieve what we should. Given that we have (without question in my mind) the fourth best team in the league, and bearing in mind our league position throughout the season so far, what we should achieve is to finish fourth.

Clear now?
