Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has done little to distance himself with a move for Joe Cole by lauding the Chelsea star and revealing he should be a shoo-in for the World Cup.

Cole is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a move across London and a reunion with Redknapp.

After securing qualification to the Champions Leaguue, the Spurs boss is hoping to attract a host of big names to White Hart Lane, with Cole heading his shopping list.

'At 28, I think he has five or six great years left in him and I can see him being one of the real impact players if he goes to South Africa,' Redknapp told The Sun.

'And I really, really hope he does make it, because he's got everything you need when you're looking at World Cup players.'

Cole has been included in Capello's provisional World Cup squad but could be left behind when the Italian whittles the 30-man squad to 23 at the beginning of June.

But Redknapp, who managed Cole's rise during his reign as West Ham manager, would love to see the tricky winger on the plane to South Africa.

'I have to say I was just as pleased for Joe Cole, who has had a bit of a rough time of things this season.

'Having a player with the ability to unlock the door is priceless. 'He's been there already - remember that screamer he scored against Sweden in 2006 - he's played a lot of Champions League football, and can perform in two or three different positions.

'I signed Joe for West Ham when he was only 11, and even now I still rate him as the best young player I have ever worked with.

'He was on another planet to everyone else, and that's not a bad compliment considering some of the great talent we then had at Upton Park, such as Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick to name but two.

'Joe loves football, still has the same enthusiasm he showed the first time I saw him, and simply wants to play the game.'

Nice bit of "tapping up" from Harry, Cole is available next month if no contract is agreed and Harry has just let him know (if he hadn't guessed already) that if he fancied a change then WHL would take him. Personally can't see where he would fit in with Modric et al but good to keep our options open incase players (Luka) leave

I think Cole is a very good player but personally I think we have enough cover with Lennon, Bale, Niko, Bentley all playing wide. I really think Niko was playing out of his skin when he joined and weighed in with some cracking goals and I really think he will have a great season next time out.
Then again if we can get Cole on a free and ship Bentley out for say £8-9m then it will probably be good business although DB did start playing better towards the end of the season.

How is selling a £17m player for £8-9 mil good business ? It might be how much he is worth now, but its definately not good business.

Joe Cole was a cracking player 18 months ago and the thought of having him at The Lane then just would not have happened!

However, he is 29 now, he has had some serious injuries recently and I really can't see where he would fit in taking into consideration our current squad.

Bringing in Cole would also smash our pay scale, maybe upsetting some of our current squad and we could not guarantee him a start every week which for a player of his calibre would be wrong.

If he doesn't re-sign for Chelsea I will be amazed.
This is all forplay prior to the re-mating of Joe and Chelsea.

Bit like the Bellamy story but at least Cole's a nice fella.

Otherwise too old, too hampered by recent injuries, wages too much and doesn't fill a position we need filling and not enough of an upgrade on what we've got.

This is the kind of signing Harry would have made at Portsmouth - someone whose wage demands are too high for the club/unsustainable for a club like Pompey, but who seems like a good opportunity to get if he's available, is one of Harry's ex-players and someone Harry really wants - and would usually get at a club like Portsmouth.

But Levy is not as accommodating and easy to push as Pompey directors were, and unless Joe Cole suddenly drops his huge demands which are not acceptable even to Chelski, it is unlikely this deal will be authorised.

since when was cole 'a tricky winger' - he's a wide mid player to me

lennon ginola young they're wingers

i don't really care if cole joins or not - if levy's happy then i am -

our priorities tho are a back up keeper and a striker

if we ended up with cole but not one of those then i'd be massively unhappy

I think he'l be useful when he's not injured, i think Harry can keep our midfield happy with rotation. unlike some 18/20 yr old's that seem to demand a first team place these days Cole would understand squad rotation and i think he'd fit in well.

Could Harry be making these comments to put the big clubs off the scent of his actual target/s?

selling a player for what he is worth is not bad business. Paying more for a player than he is worth is bad business, but you cannot undo what has already happened. if we can get a better player (upgrade) and sell Bemntley for at least what he is (currently) worth, then fine by me
