Tottenham are on the verge of shocking the football world by entering the race to sign Valencia’s David Villa even though he would cost in excess of £40 Million. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has managed to persuade the Spurs Chairman, Daniel Levy that if Spurs want to consolidate their position and have a real chance of becoming Champions League regulars then they will have to spend big time in order to achieve that status.
Redknapp has made it clear that he wants to sign a special player for Tottenham and Villa would certainly fulfill that criteria, whether he would join Spurs over the likes of Barcelona or Man Utd is another matter but Redknapp’s attitude is quite simple, you have to be in it to win it and Spurs will have no chance of getting a player like Villa if they don’t at least put a bid in.
Even though £40 Million would represent a huge outlay for Spurs, far more than they have ever laid out, it will be offset with sales of the likes of Roman Pavlyuchenko, Jermaine Jenas and David Bentley, in no way will a deal like this be financed by the sale of players like Aaron Lennon or Luka Modric, that would simply be self defeating.
If Tottenham fail in persuading Villa to join them that will not stop Redknapp continuing his search for that Torres like player and the Tottenham boss is confident that he will get the player he believes will maintain Spurs at the top table of European football.
