Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Sebastien Bassong suffered World Cup heartbreak on Saturday night.

The Spurs pair both started as Cameroon crashed out of the tournament with a 2-1 defeat against Denmark.

The result left Holland top of Group E on six points but means the Indomitable Lions cannot overhaul both Japan and the Danes, who will fight it out in the final group match for the right to join the Dutch in the last 16.

It could have been a different story. Samuel Eto'o opened the scoring for Cameroon in the 10th minute, Niclas Bendtner and Dennis Rommedahl turned it around for the Danes but Thomas Sorensen made two vital saves to keep the scoreline at 2-1 - an equaliser and Cameroon would still have had an outside chance to progress.

Instead, Benoit and Sebastien will be playing for pride in the final group game against Holland on Thursday.

The next Spurs interest in South Africa is with Heurelho Gomes and Brazil, although the goalkeeper is likely to be on the bench against Ivory Coast on Sunday evening.

Wilson Palacios and Honduras will realistically need to take something from Spain in their second match in Group H on Monday night.

The final round of group matches begin on Tuesday with Giovani dos Santos and Mexico up against Uruguay in Group A.

Great pity for Benny and Sebo but at least they'll be well rested for the start of our Champion's League campaign. Unless Honduras does well against an erractic underperforming Spain looks like Wilson will be going the same way.
Gio for man of the match again this coming Tuesday ?

Will be great to compare forlan vs dos santos

Although Forlan is the main striker, absolute central figure for his country's team, very experienced at 31 years old - and Gio is a support striker/attacking midfielder, first time in major competition finals outside Central America and just turned 21. We cannot expect same influence there.

But yes, it will be interesting to see them on the pitch at the same time.
