Diego Forlan remains one of Tottenham's main summer transfer targets following his impressive displays at the World Cup, according to a report.

Harry Redknapp is a long-standing admirer of the Atletico Madrid striker and has enjoyed his performances in South Africa.

The 31-year-old scored twice in a man-of-the-match performance as Uruguay beat South Africa 3-0 and looks set to feature in the knockout stages of the tournament.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Redknapp now believes Forlan could be a key player for Spurs in next season's Champions League.

The White Hart Lane board are usually reluctant to pay big transfer fees or salaries for older players, but Redknapp will ask them to make an exception in the case of the ex-Manchester United forward.

Atletico Madrid are believed to value Forlan at £12 million after he was a key player in their Europa League triumph, but Spurs will look to pay considerably less than that.

A move for Forlan is likely to hasten Robbie Keane's departure from White Hart Lane, with Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Celtic all interested in the Ireland captain.

12 mil would be a good price especially considering his current form, still not the marquee signing I would hope for

Eh?

For a 31 year old who wont start week in week out?

No way Levy would go any higher than £8-9m

U lot have got to be joking, other than a too bigger jump from Independiente to Man United 5 years ago, the guy has been a goal machine and is a fantastic player. To say he wouldnt get in our first team is a joke... He is easily a marquee signing, its just his age doesnt fit in with Levys transfer, so I doubt we'd sign him. Honestly check the guys honours...

i imagine he would start week in week out. If that's not the plan, or there are doubts he would be good enough to, then we shouldn't bother. As long as we get the athetico forlan and not shadow that played for man u then we prob wont get much better TBH

Yes please! he is the signing i would want but not for twelve mil due to his age. It was a while since he was at Man U he was younger and did not get time to settle in the premier league. He is now a prolific goal scoring machine who is not afraid of hard work I say if we can get him for 8-9m the lets do business and sign him on a three year deal.

I agree Boony , Forlan is a proper player and would bring out the best in the players around him .

Also plays the Tottenham way .

Would leave enough in the kitty to sign him an intelligent striker partner like Miroslav Klose .

Have to upgrade our strike force if want to finish in top 4 again .

Athletico want £12m and apparently we want to pay £8m according to SSN. So it will probably end up around £10m. Which is not a bad price for a player of his quality even if he only has a couple of years left.

the way he dropped off and played in the hole against s arfrica was mouth watering

The fact he knows english and has a point to prove makes him the perfect signing, quality player even at 31 could still be good till 33/34 as pace has never been his biggest asset its his movement and clinical finishing

I think we need a hard as nails left-back in the Stuart Pearce mould. Boony's far too soft for that.

Ah, another one from this mysterious "report" writer. Metro, Daily Fail, Mirror - get some balls and, unless you have a source that can't be dismissed as total, made up speculation, don't bother "reporting" it.

Where's the quotes? Where's the interviews where Harry, being such a "long term admirer", has said previously that he'd like to sign Forlan for any club.

As per usual, wank pre-pubescent journalism, but it'll not be the last - it's a format for headlines that means any player that does alright can be inserted as so: [X player] still target for [X team], with no actual proof or anything other than "A report" or "A source close to the club/player".

I'm quite surprised we've not been linked with Rommedahl or Higuain yet.

He's an upgrade on all our players. Could play for another 3 years as his game does not rely on pace. Has a great attitude towards football and team mates. I'd love to sign him up.

He has easily been the most impressive player in the world cup so far. Both games he has played he has been the stand out player on the pitch

I don't understand the fantasy manager approach of some fans.

You would sign him for £9m but not £12m? Surely if he is the right player for our side, the difference doesn't really matter, particularly if it is just £3m?

Surely if he is a "prolific goal scoring machine" who you expect to do well for us, you want to see him play for us irrespective of the cost?

I'd say Forlan has 4 years left without breaking a sweat. Looka at Raul, Del Piero, Insagi. Why does a player have to hang his boots up when he turns 33?

Go for it. Forlan would be a dream. The only question is, what happens to Defoe? Or do we go 433 with Modric Hudd/Palacios and Lenny in the middle, which would probably mean suicide?

Any thoughts on the latter problem?

hes worth 12 mil just to solve our penalty taking problem.

12m is about right and anyone who thinks he won't walk into our side is on drugs. He's an absolute stand out compared to rest of our forwards. What did we pay for Crouch??? Forlan for an extra 4 or so is a bargain.
