Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has been given the green light by Eastlands boss Roberto Mancini to launch a formal bid for out-of-favour Manchester City star Craig Bellamy. The Welshman had a terrific first half of last season, however the City star struggled in the second half of the campaign losing his place in the starting eleven. Bellamy has become marginalised since Roberto Mancini took over from Mark Hughes and is eager to seal a move to a new club in the summer transfer window. Spurs have been favourites for the player’s signature, however Celtic, Aston Villa and Cardiff City have also emerged as candidates.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is a big admirer of Bellamy having tried to sign the striker for Tottenham when the Welshman was at West Ham. Reports at the time suggested City forced Redknapp to pull out of the deal for the Welshman by threatening to gazump the North London club in their quest to sign then Wigan Athletic midfielder Wilson Palacios. However, Roberto Mancini looks set to offload a number of City stars with Bellamy the first star set for the exit door at Eastlands with sports bookmakers cutting the odds on the player leaving the club with Tottenham Hotspur the favourites to land the Welsh captain. Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill and new Celtic manager Neil Lennon are also interested, while Cardiff City have emerged as shock candidates to land the tempremental striker.
Bellamy netted nine goals in 34 appearances for Manchester City last term despite losing his place in the first team in the second half of the season. The Welshman had clear the air talks with Mancini at the end of the season and made clear his intentions to quit the club without the guarantee of regular first team football. With Mancini set to bring in new blood to the Citizens, being linked with Barcelona’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Valencia’s David Silva, and Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko, the Italian manager has decided it is time to cash in on the Welsh international. Spurs are the favourites for Bellamy’s signature, however Aston Villa, Celtic, and Cardiff City are also in the running for the player’s signature.
Bellamy has not seen eye to eye with the new Manchester City management structure having been signed by former City boss Mark Hughes, who had signed the former Newcastle United striker for Blackburn Rovers and again at Eastlands. Despite a good season for Manchester City Bellamy is not in Mancini’s first team plans at the City of Manchester stadium and is ready to end his time in Manchester.
Mancini is reportedly looking for a fee in the region of £8-£12 million for Bellamy, with Redknapp reportedly likely to test Mancini with an offer in the next few days. Spurs manager Redknapp seems to be firmly in pole position to clinch the signing of Bellamy with Aston Villa, Celtic and Cardiff City alternative destinations for the forward.
