Tottenham are ready to make another move for prodigious Ipswich teenager Connor Wickham, an English striker who is already being dubbed the new Wayne Rooney.

Spurs have already had a £5million offer for the 17-year-old turned down, but Harry Redknapp is weighing up an improved £8m bid in an attempt to lure the youngster to White Hart Lane.

Wickham only signed his first professional contract in March, when he turned 17, but he has already made 31 appearances for the Tractor Boys, scoring six times - including three goals in his last five Championship games of the season.

Redknapp has seen enough potential to justify a multi-million pound fee, and the Spurs boss is particularly impressed with the forward's size - despite his age, Wickham is 6ft 4ins tall and weighs 14 stone.

Premier League scouts report that the talented youngster is just as good as Rooney was at the same age, and bigger.

Wickham made his debut for Ipswich in April 2009, aged 16 years and 11 days, making him the club's youngest ever player, but it is his performances for England Under-17s which have really caught the eye.

The Tottenham target has netted eight goals in 10 appearances for the young Lions and, having struck a 21-minute hat-trick against Azerbaijan last October, he was the star man at the Uefa Under-17 European Championship in Liechtenstein last month.

Wickham scored both goals in a 2-1 win over France in the semi-final before netting the winner against Spain in the final.

Former Ipswich and England defender Kevin Beattie has already described Wickham as "an incredible talent", adding: "The boy has everything, strength, skill, the lot. It would not surprise me if he were partnering Wayne Rooney up front for England in a few years time. He impresses me that much."

Redknapp stated at the start of the summer that he is primarily looking for world-class players who would "make the difference" to his Spurs side.

However, the Tottenham boss surprised fans with his first signings last summer, bagging young Sheffield United full-backs Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker, and the Lilywhites have long had a policy of snapping up England's brightest prospects.

Spurs already have a good relationship with Ipswich, having loaned Mexico World Cup star Giovani Dos Santos to Portman Road for three months between March and June in 2009.

And the Lilywhites last week announced that Tim Sherwood will take a Spurs XI side to Ipswich for a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, August 3.

Redknapp intends to secure Wickham's signature before loaning him back out to a Championship side - probably Ipswich - for experience.

However, Ipswich boss Roy Keane insists that his club's hierarchy have no intention of cashing in on their brightest prospect.

"Connor is very much one for the future and we believe he is going to be a top, top player," said Keane. "He had a very good end to the season, even away with England [Under-17s], and Connor is very much part of our plans. From the club and the owner's point of view, we are under no pressure to sell him.

From the Mirror:

He made his debut for Ipswich in April 2009, aged 16 years and 11 days, coming on as a substitute in a 3–1 home defeat against Doncaster. That made him the club's youngest ever player, beating the record set by Jason Dozzell in February 1984.

Let's hope that's not an omen of anything...

Sounds like a promising young talent, concerned whether we could give him the game time hee needs to develop though

I'm sure that Redknapp and Levy are well aware of this, but the issue with precociously big and tall young players is always telling how much of their success is down to genuine talent and how much is just down to their ability to dominate their peers physically. We signed Tomas Pekhart at about 16, at which time he was already about 6'-4", and he scored prolifically at youth level, but he never bulked out, nor did he develop his striker's touch to a high level.

I have to say that the endorsement from Kevin Beattie means quite a bit. He's not only a canny football character, despite some troubles after he retired, he's also one of the greatest English central defenders I ever saw - Ledley King class - and unfortunately his career was completely ruined and finally curtailed before he was 30, as a result of successive severe knee injuries. Beattie and Alan Hunter were the rocks in Ipswich's late 70s defence (the team that won the FA Cup), with Hunter being more the Dawson/Terry type and Beattie being very much the King/Ferdinand character.

Ipswich's FA Cup win itself (against Arsenal) was a master class in crunching, clean, perfectly-timed tackling, mainly by Beattie.

... and I saw the Ipswich team bus on the Seven Sisters Road on their way to Scumbury for their semi-final with West Brom on the same day that Spurs in Div 2 had a bigger crowd at the Lane than either semi (Scum played Orient at Stamford Bridge)

I was at that match. The reason I have fairly detailed knowledge of the 70s and 80s Ipswich Town teams is because my partner in those days was from an Ipswich-supporting family. She was at Wembley with her mother and brother for the final, but I had to watch it on an old black & white TV in her flat .

Went to Portman Rd a few times in those days, but mainly we used to watch Ipswich when they visited London - indeed, that was how my first visit to WHL happened.

I live 30 mins from Ipswich (was there this afternoon as it happens) so a lot of people around here support them. Wickham is already a big guy and although I've seen nothing to merit comparison to Rooney (I have only seen him twice in the flesh) there does seem to be something about him. Plus, he's only just turned 17 so there's a lot of learning to be done yet. Some Town fans I've spoken to about this deal would begrudgingly accept a sell now and loan back deal.

PS we have a far greater relationship with them than the Gio loan and Jason Dozzell mentioned above. Who could forget recent greats to have graced both sides....Jamie Clapham, Tarricco, John Scales....

This was my first thought exactly. Six goals in 31 appearances for Ipswich doesn't sound too exciting either. Worth a speculative couple of mill, perhaps, but really an unknown quantity.

The counter-argument, of course, is that when he's playing in the first team, his size isn't such an advantage, so if he can score 6 goals in 31 (mainly substitute, I think) appearances at 17 years of age, that's a positive sign.

The scouting reports I've seen reproduced on this boy really are very positive, indeed excited. But there's never a guarantee with a 17 year old of any size.

Yes, that was the match - I'm impressed that you remember which day of the week it was .

Ipswich equalised three times and then Spurs got a somewhat dodgy penalty. It poured with rain throughout the second half.

As I've said on here before my housemate is an Ipswich fan and when we were first linked with Wickham, he gave me so much abuse. They don't want to lose him, he is a real prospect down there.
