What is our PR team doing??

As the lovely Karren Brady spouts another pile of shite from her fat ugly face today, I can't help but wonder what is our PR team actually doing?

If I recall correctly, we recruited a PR man last year and the assumption was that he'd be used to help our bid for the OS. The silence from them though has been pretty deafening. I know there've been various interviews with Levy on the radio after the last couple of weeks, but that's been about it as far as I know.

West Ham on the other hand, along with the likes of Seb Coe and various other athletes, have been criticising the Spurs bid left right and centre by using various facts figures and statistics that are incorrect (the cost of the stadium being £500m for instance when that's the cost for the whole site, not just the stadium). There never seems to be any response from Spurs either correcting what West Ham are saying or just to even let the public know what the real situation is.

The main news outlets have been criticising the Spurs bid without knowing or using all the facts, and as usual the general public seem to be lapping up everything they say. If everyone knew what the real situation is would the polls still be the same?

It could be that the Spurs PR team are working silently behind the scenes, advising the real situation to the people who matter instead of spouting off to the media like Brady seems to do all the time. If this is the case then I praise them for not getting drawn into a public argument but at the same time if Spurs DO get the bid, then the public will automatically be in uproar against it because they weren't made aware of the real facts.

We know the following on here because we're pretty clued up:

  • The cost of the actual stadium is in the region of £80m, not £500m
  • It was always designed to be knocked down after the games
  • Spurs will be redeveloping Crystal Palace to fulfill the legacy as promised in our bid
  • We will use parts of the OS to help redevelop Crystal Palace
  • Spurs will fund the training of 5(?) young athletes for the 2016 games
  • Spurs will add various other things to the olympic site if we get the bid to keep it a place for the general public to visit and not just reduce it to a football stadium (not just the tie-in with AEG but other stuff too)
  • Spurs will financially help all London boroughs involved in the olympics
  • Lease payments for the stadium will mean the taxpayer is not suffering
As far as the general public is aware though, all we're doing is:

  • Knocking down a £500m stadium
  • getting rid of the athletic legacy that was promised in our bid.
It doesn't seem right to me that the publics view of our plans is so far from reality and our PR guys don't seem to be doing much about it. Is it because we're so confident our bid will succeed, or do they know something we don't - will the committee release all the bid details to the public once their decision has been made, and will that speak for itself? Do the actions of West Ham just reek of desperation on their part?

For the record I want us to stay at WHL, but I don't like seeing the club being criticised and ridiculed in the media and not give a proper response.

Cheers.

I think they have accepted that they are not going to win the public's hearts and minds. I suspect they have spent most of their time in the last few weeks lobbying key decision makers in the government and City Hall, focusing on the numbers, and that we will clearly allow them to recoup as much of the Olympic spend as is possible.

With the current cuts happening everywhere, money in the bank will be a powerful lure to those in power.

We're definitely playing the right strategy here. Every time Brady runs her mouth it makes us look that littles bit better.

We're concentrated on the finances and economics. She is almost begging and pleading for public sympathy and support. It's pathetic really.

I'm sure the committee won't fail to notice this. Like they won't fail to notice that they've asked all bidding partners not to mention things like costs when Brady repeatedly does. The bid won't be won or lost in newspapers.

Both WestHam and ourselves were told to basically shut it over the all bickering between each other. We have, but Brady is still going strong

We got Pele to come out and support our plan.

Have we really even bothered to engage in the bickering though? I know Harry has had a little dig in his sun article, but has anyone else on our side even bothered with the whole argument?

I think Paul Peschisolido should convert to the Muslim faith and make his wife wear the burka, and not let her speak in public.

Did Levy? but apart from that I dont think so. Anyone else has come out in surport of us rather than slagging Westham off

I just find West Ham's little snipes as extremely childish. Furthermore I think it points to the weakness of their bid that they need to try and attack ours rather than promote theirs

She is everywhere moaning about the 'Olympic Legacy' and that we'd knock it doen with Tax Payers Money! Keeps forgetting that the Tax payers will be bailing WH out when they are in the Championship and getting 25K in for each home game! 'Big Fat White Elephant'!!!!

MBS is right. Our PR war was pathetic. I only hope that with the former olympic bid team on board we already have it in the bag hence keeping out of a mudslinging match.

If he's like every other PR person I've known, snoozing, schmoozing, and running up a whopping expense account.

I'm sure danielneeds is right and we've been concentrating on the people that matter, truth is we do have the best bid and answer all the questions better than the alternative, we even have the best athletics legacy, the other bid offers only one unique selling point and that is a running track in the Olympic stadium and I'm sure this is the line we are taking.

I think this is spot on - what i'm worried about though is the potential fallout if Spurs are given the green light. The public only know what they see in the media and at the moment it's pretty anti-spurs. While I don't want us to get drawn into a petty argument with West Ham I do think we need to soften the publics opinion of our bid and I hope the PR machine starts working before we're faced with a huge backlash!

It's no coincidence that after every West Ham defeat, and another step closer to the trap door, up pops Ms Brady with a comment aimed at deflecting the probability of a skint Championship side playing in the Olympic Stadium.

She cracks me up. In her "diary" she thanks us for loaning them Keane and say's their is no hard feelings. Then the next day comes out and slags us off again. Pure Class.
Hope they get relegated, win the bid and go bankrupt. We then take over tell athletics to go f**k emselves (they ain't getting a penny) and build our stadium.

You're rather missing the point that she's got every Sun reader who isn't a Spurs fan (or, to be more precise, a Spurs fan who's in favour of a move to Stratford) rooting for the Spammers' bid. That is the object of her exercise, and she's doing it very well.

I don't see that our bid as being attacked to be honest. I think that the media has actually been pretty fair as has public opinion.

Football is the most popular sport in this country. Any football fan with an ounce of sense knows that a running track and a football pitch don't mix. The vast majority of football fans will view our bid as the better bid. They may not like the fact that we, Spurs, are going for it, but if they view it objectively, they know we have the better plan.

I think you're labouring under a misapprehension, MBH. I very much doubt that the PR person we employed is simply a guy with a dazzling smile oiling his way into nespaper editor's offices and asking them for a couple of column inches. I would imagine that the PR bod advises the Spurs communications department and the board on what to say, when, and to whom.

As others have stated, playing the detached, logical, economical game to my mind is a far better startegy. We are showing ourselves as being business-like and businessmen.

I don't like the idea of leaving Tottenham, but if Spurs are in Stratford, then so am I. And if Levy believes that that is the way to go, then I will (with a heavy heart) go with him.

That being the case, I think he's played a masterly game. He has ensured that the club has not descended into mudslinging and has given Brady enough rope to hang herself with. As she continues her tirades she becomes more and more shrill and tedious. People are beginning to ignore her. People are beginning to deride her.

It's the same in any field - someone who bangs on and on about the same subject in the same way, time and again, eventually bores people and alienates them - look at gibbs on SC. People just simply got sick of him. Brady is the same.

We stated our case, were open (as much as was possible) from the start and made plain what we wanted to do. The only thing she can attack Spurs' bid over is the reneging on the Olympic promise - something which is not as black and white as she tries to make out.

The war of words cannot be won, except in one way - don't engage in it, which is exactly what we have done.
