The Club has today sought permission from the High Court to bring a claim against the London Borough of Newham (“Newham”) for judicial review of Newham’s process in providing a loan for the conversion of the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games.
The Club wrote to Newham asking it to explain its reasons and justification for its decision, but Newham has declined to respond to this request for information. Due to the time limits which apply to claims for judicial review, the Club has had no alternative but to issue these proceedings in order to protect its position.
The Club continues to hold discussions with both local and national government bodies in order to seek to agree a feasible stadium solution.

This should be in the New Stadium section of the site...

Very interesting though, if slightly desperate seeming from the club.

What I struggled a little to understand at the time is why Newham Council wouldn't have wanted two Premier League clubs in its borough, why it wouldn't have been glad for the extra construction work (for which read jobs) our proposal would bring and the fact that they wouldn't have to fork out a penny for us whereas they were risking £40m for the West Ham proposal. If it was about value for money for tax payers then we were the bid to support, so why were they so strongly behind the West Ham proposal?

Another little tidbit of hope for the NDP in the last sentence perhaps? Wheels seem to be turning behind the scenes in our favour.

As each development unfolds, it appears more and more like Tottenham Hotspur PLC are asking all the questions that should've been asked by "the authorities" before the decision was made. Whilst some might think this makes us look petty, and like we're dragging it out because we're sulking, i prefer to see it as Levy instigating the full investigation into the shifty looking setup in the first place, perhaps also garnering a bit of respect from the residents of Newham as well, questioning the viability of this immense loan, etc.

Ah well, watch this space i suppose.

Every year, Newham Council rec eives more than £100million extra from the government than the average London council because of depriv ation. However, it spent £92million buying the property, known as Building 1000, and a further £18.7million refurbishing it. One government insider told Metro: ‘It resembles a West End nightclub.’
Newham also faces the deepest spending cuts – 8.9 per cent – of any council in the capital. It is planning to cut as many as 1,600 jobs, including teaching support staff, and impose new contracts on 5,000 other workers in the coming year.

It's another labour council just spooning itself money and really does not give a flying shit about the local population.

Obviously this is only because they've asked for information from Newham and it hasn't been forthcoming so they are forcing their hands.
That said I don't exactly know what it is they are asking for, what is the process they are asking about? Is it the decision making process in the council and how the vote was taken.
Alternatively is it acceptable for a council to provide a loan to one club but not to another particularly when the end result would be the same, a premiership club at the Olympic Stadium.
That said Newham council is in it for community reasons and to see the redevelopment of the West Ham site in Green Street which probably explains the choice and I'd have thought makes their partizanship Judicially acceptable.
Still it keeps up the pressure on all other interested parties.:)

cusop, this has been done and it is an old story as by taking on this building they have managed to get rid of a whole load of other buildings, sixty odd buildings I believe, and the upshot is that they will save £12million a year so should actually be, and indeed have been, commended for their actions.

It has also put a plan into action to freeze wages enabling them to avoid any redundancies and of course it faces the deepest spending cuts, it has had more of it's money cut by the government and that is because it is a flagship, and very successful, Labour council, surely that ashould be what you should be complaining about when considering the local population.
I also have to say that anyone who levels an accusation of not giving a flying shit about the local population knows absolutely nothing about Newham council whatsoever, sorry mate but thats the truth.

I blame Des Walker.

If he hadn't scored that own goal that won us the '91 FA Cup, i wouldn't have spent these last 20 years expecting quite so much

I see those ****'s Brady and Gold haven't stuck their respective oars in yet.

Not so cocky now? Wonder if Levy does have info that could result in compensation or something else?

That's your opinion and by the sounds of it a first hand experience. My first hand experience of working with, not for the council, is yeah they say they are for the local community, but they waste money like a lot of councils. Also they suffer from positive descrimination.

There was a report in the Standard a couple of months ago concerning how the leader of Newham Council was railroading the decision through the council and ignoring their standard processes.

Under Newham Council rules. papers on which there is to be a vote have to be circulated to council members 7 days in advance of the meeting. The papers relating to the loan were not circulated in advance as they were deemed commercially sensitive. So councillors had to vote on the proposal without seeing the details of the loan. I'm not surprised that we are seeking judicial review.

A couple of other points of note with regard to Newham Council. The leader of the council has declared that he has received 39 gifts from West Ham FC over the past 3 years. I have not seen the nature of the gifts but even 39 lots of match tickets adds up to a few thousand pounds.

There was also an article on the BBC website before the Newham Council vote about the guarantees (or lack of them) for the loan. It was suggested that if West Ham were to be relegated and go into administration, the council would not be indemnified for any losses it may suffer. I have not seen any subsequent articles on this issue but if true it would also warrant a judicial review.

Can anyone explain what we are trying to get out of this? I don't mean putting pressure on Boris but what the judicial review itself would mean for Spurs? Are we trying to find out if the loan is legal or what? If it was given through improper channels what would that mean for West Hams bid?
I think that's the most question marks I've put in a paragraph in my life but if anyone can give a fuller explanation I'd much appreciate it.

Why the fuck should we move on? we spent big money on this and if the process was flawed, we could recoup that back.
