BC, I agree with your whole assessment completely, other than Walker. Not sure if you're trying to counter not being too hard on him for having a pretty set opinion on him, but you're rating is pretty generous.

I'm a fan of Walker's but he was sloppy today, very. Hand a hand in all three goals really, and the first one was dreadful.

I've only watched the game live at the ground to be honest. He was pretty tight to Rooney, just skanked half a yard on him and the second goal I'm not sure what else Walker could have done without seeing it again. I didn't realise he had anything to do with the third.

My biggest problem is his lack of intelligence at either end in general. Considering he was supposed to be an attacking FB, he actually offers very little in an attacking sense and lacks craft.

He's been culpable for a few goals this season in important games (Chelsea, ManC, ManU for example) and got away with some poor defending at other times.

I'm not a huge fan of his, but I really didn't think generally he was terrible today, saw a lot of ball and kept Young pretty quiet, just got done for half a yard at a set piece.

Maybe I'll change my mind if I watch it again.

I don't understand why Walker was assigned to Rooney for the corner. He is by far their most dangerous player at set pieces. We should have had our most experienced defender on him.

For the first goal he could have done better but to be honest I am not a fan of any goalkeeper that doesn't come off his line for crosses that land in the center of the 6 yard box, near post or back post is fine but center of the box is his territory.
The second goal was a clearance that he didn't execute very well but again the scorer was extremely lucky,we had 5 men on the line and it missed all of them and Young didn't place it there.....it just ended up in the wrong place for us.
The 3rd goal wasn't his fault........he had to pass Young(coming inside) on to the nearest CB(Kaboul) because Walker had a man on his outside.

Unless my memory is fooling me he had nothing to do with the third goal. With a winger on the outside the fullback should never go in centrally to close down, particularly not when there's only one striker for the CBs to mark. Kaboul should've closed him down, and King was somewhat out of position as well. Walker wasn't. Should be said though the finish was excellent.

As for the second he should've done better but was but in a very tricky position. For the first he never should've allowed Rooney to get the header, though I question both the decision to have him mark him and Friedel's movement towards the first post - never mind him going to get the ball, which he refuses to do in principle.

For ratings in general more or less agree with BC, though thought Lennon and Livermore were perhaps marginally better than Sandro and Modders. I also thought Saha was average; Defoe deserves another chance if we're going 442 IMO.

Just got to lift ourselves up and get back to winning ways now - beginning of the season all over again...Having said that: We were actually good today. Somewhat sloppy. But good.

Wasn't saying Walker was directly responsible for all three goals, he was for the first one...but played a hand in the others, well certainly the second.

A break a break my kingdom for a break.

We can't seem to buy one against those ****s.

To start at the beginning, I have to credit Redknapp. His selections were pretty much forced on him, but he could have been tempted to keep Modric central and put Kranjcar wide, but he didn't and the line up worked and it worked because more importantly he made sure we pressed better today, and whenever we do this, we look a much better side. I just wish we could do it more.

The first half performance was excellent, and was a clear reminder that Modric in CM isn't mandatory for ball domination or a good performance. We were pressing them out of the ball and doing all the right things on it ourselves. What started it though was after the first 5 minutes of ManU looking bright, we had a little spell where we got hold of the ball and passed it around the back and side to side. Cue the wankers behind me grumbling about the ball not going forwards. But we built from this little spell. By starving ManU of the ball for a few minutes we took the wind from their sails and didn't look back for at least an hour. Having proved we could keep it from them we seemed to grow in confidence and for the rest of the half played all the football.

Then history repeated itself. We don't get the breaks and they do. We were unlucky first of all that our player found himself in the way of a goal, then unlucky that he gets given handball for the goal he scores. Then Utd go up the other end and score to give the half a completely unjust scoreline.

Second half we come out and are still on top when Modric disengages his brain and we somehow find ourselves two down. We continued top plug away but started to get a bit long ball, and the third goal, scored by the otherwise pretty shit Young, really killed us. Heads visibly dropped, understandably.

Lennon was good enough today to make Bale's absence unnoticeable. Livermore had a pretty decent game too. He didn't do anything spectacular, but just did plenty of good simple stuff that helped us dominate the middle of the pitch. Both strikers worked hard.

We did lots of things right collectively today, but were let down by a couple of small individual errors and the lack of a lucky break.

Ratings:

Friedel 6 - He's a solid line limpet, but I really hope our next keeper is far more proactive.

Walker 6.5 - He was Ok today, and he works hard, seeing quite a lot of the ball today, but was culpable for the first goal I think.

Kaboul 7 - OK.

King 7 - OK.

Ekotto 7 - Played quite well, saw plenty of ball.

Lennon 7.5 - Was very bright today and worked hard.

Livermore 7.5 - Good game

Sandro 7.5 - Good game. His early biting helped establish our stronghold on the midfield, he refused to let Scholes settle on the ball.

Modric 7 - I thought he was good today generally, and I like it when he has less responsibility, but was heavily culpable for the second goal.

Saha 6.5 - Worked hard.

Adebayor 7 - Worked hard.

Pretty much agree with this, although I think you're a bit generous with Walker and Adebayor, but maybe only a .25 of a mark. You get me?

I also think that while it was obvious you were going to point out that Modric didn't play in the middle and we performed well, his best influence on the game came when he moved more central in a sort of 352 with BAE pushing to left mid. Modric is our best player on the ball, what Scholes is to Man U (Scholes now, not when he was banging in 20 a season) and we need him to be involved and on the ball as much as possible. He doesn't get that playing on the left, nor would he at AMR.

Somewhat furious after last week, more just gutted after yesterday, to turn up and watch us boss the Champions and still come away losing 3-1 was heartbreaking. Makes you wonder if we will ever get the rub of the green against those ****s.

Just a word about the ref, even if there hadn't been the 'was it or wasn't it a handball', it was the most incompetent performance of a referee I have ever seen live, not fit enough to keep up with play, at least twice the ball struck him when he was badly positioned, and some of his decisions, both ways, were baffling.

Played well today, abit huff and puff, i didn't ever really feel we were going to win, fair play to the boys who can't be faulted for their effort, but i think this dip is mainly down to our dealings in the Jan window, one injury and we change our whole style of playing and have to play the best CM on the left.

Yeh I know Mods was on the left and so out of the main traffic , but reading stuff here like 'Mods ran the game' makes me wonder if we saw the the same match .

Little flak for handing Utd their 2nd on a plate for Mods either . Don't really understand that . 'fucking disgrace' would be the nicest thing I could come up with .What the holy fuck would Fergusen say to him doing that playing for Utd ?

Walker gets a smoothish ride too...yeh he's young and will get better , but we need a top right back now really . He's harder/more honest about himself it appears than SC .

We worked hard , but the defence seems wobblier of late and the attack
blunter , yes I know we've just played 2 top teams , but are they SO great that conceding 8 to them is just worth a shrug ?

Benni to take corners/free kicks plz

On another note , pissed off that AvB was sacked . The players know the world , his dog ,(and Abramovich) blame them and says they are too old . Watch those fuckers tear out of the traps against....us

I'm not going to C&P your post BC, but that is pretty much how I saw it (now, that's got to be a first - right ).

The only thing I would say, again, is that Walker is still young and improving (obviously, not yesterday Eek), and I think you are a bit hard on him. Saying that, I still think we should have started the season with Charlie.

What I also noticed was for all the people who were really slating Livermore a few weeks back, not one of them gave him credit for putting in a good performance against one of the best teams in the land yesterday.

Credit where credit's due? No, silence...and you can be sure the next questionable performance he produces they'll be all over it.

Plenty have given him credit and rightly so, but those wern't the ones saying he offers fuck all.

Even though he isn't that young, he's young in terms of his experience in playing for the first team. As he acquires more experience his confidence should grow. Never going to be an easy on the eye player but he could turn out to be a very effective squad player who will come in and out of the side and give his all. I was impressed with his passing yesterday against one of the best sides in the Country, and that should really build his confidence.

Having defended him also I agree with you Mr Pink, I thought in particular he spread the play very well yesterday, I didnt think he had that passing range in his locker if I'm being honest. He's progressing nicely I think, especially in the last few league games he has played.

I agree...and, ultimately, lpaying his role, there are very few clubs (at out elevated position ) who would be happy relying on someone his age. Good squad player...let's see how he progresses.

He's knocked some good crossfield passes about recently.

A few musings...

- is it written in Grandad Brad's contract that he isn't allow to come off his line at corners?
- was that Modric's 20th or 21st straight game against decent opposition where he has underperfomed?
- why was Saha still on after 70 mins when his legs had gone after 40?
- when will Vinny Sideways (Livermore) be sent back to Derby?
- why do we bother sending people up for corners? we might as well just pass it out for a goal kick. At least this would nullify the chance of them scoring on the break.
- how do we always dominate United and lose?
- Adebayor is good. Imagine how much better he would be if could trap a football?
- Did we sign Pavlyuchenko instead of Pogrebnyak by mistake?

Can't say I'm disheartened. The game panned out exactly as I thought it would. One of these days we are going to play complete shit (like the Goons at Anfield) and walk away with 3 points against a big team.
