If Mason doesn't win this poll its a farce.

Thought walker was very good first half, put through Lennon 3(?) times as well as a few good marauding runs. His best performance this season by far.

Dembele - Class again. Glide's around the pitch. Him and Sandro look to be a brilliant partnership in the making.

Vertonghen and Caulker were solid, good distribution - pretty faultless.

Bale and Lennon's end product very disappointing again.

Defoe - meh. Got a bit more involved than normally, few nice through balls for Lennon, didn't really get a chance though. Not great - felt we missed Ade's presence up top.

Naughton was very good again, calm, solid and good distribution. Seen some people saying he's better than Benny. Ridiculous, 2 solid games and he's better than Benny.

Overall, very good performance, robbed by the 2 disallowed goals. First clean sheet though and Lloris was commanding, everything Friedel isnt.

lol at reshep.

Dude, dont know how you can give Lloris 7.5, he had pretty much nothing to do. Also Bale, Lennon and Defoe were fairly poor in the final third.

Vertonghen a 7.5 also? Played ok, but no better than the rest of the back four really. People seem to be rating some of the new players higher than they should be based on personal bias rather than how they have actually performed. Same went for this with the ratings Vs reading.

Also Omar, finding my most recent post and putting a dumb against it because i disagreed with you here - very small minded and petty, bad form.

Yes, we could be deadlier and more creative in the front third, but this was our best performance so far this season.
Any other day we would have had one, if not two goals. Decisions went against us - if Caulker was fouling then we should have had a penalty a moment earlier. Lazio's 4 bookings could have been 7 or 8.
We bossed most of the game and they are a decent side.

Lloris 7
Walker 6.5
Naughton 6.5
Caulker 7
Vertonghen 7
Sandro 7
Dembele 7
Bale 6.5
Lennon 6.5
Dempsey 6.5
Defoe 5.5

Defoe might have made rather more of an impression if more of his runs had been picked out by team-mates.

Complaining about getting a neg rep after immediately giving one out is somewhat hypocritical though I would say.

Aahh....the floodlights, the white kit, one of the competitions better sides at the Lane. An absolute shit load of positives from that thoroughly absorbing game.

You don't always need goals galore and crash bang wallop end to end jamboree, sometimes football is like a beautifully choreographed fencing dual. That was our best performance of the season. A 90 minute tactical and technical tussle, the kind I really enjoy watching.

Our football was all about nurturing the ball, sucking Lazio in and out of position and trying to find the weakness in the guard. It was just unfortunate that the four times we did this they fell to the brainless Lennon, who completely wasted every single one with poor choice and delivery. A real shame because he did so well to get into those positions and Walker and Defoe did very well to find him each time with lovely through balls.

The officials also cost us two goals. Caulkers goal particularly galling, as it was never a foul, didn't even look like one, Piss poor refereeing on a night when the ref generally was good around the pitch.

I really enjoyed watching us play tonight. Our pressing and possession was very good, our movement was very good mostly and you can see clear evidence of coaching coming through. This shows in what our players are doing when they don't have the ball, both in and out of position.

Clearly we are suffering from a lack of ultimate quality in the final third. Bale, Lennon, Walker, Defoe, Dempsey. All have qualities but those qualities are all very similar (mostly pace or power) , just in different degrees, but all lack wit, finesse and craft.

No-one played badly tonight, everyone put a shift in. We were very unlucky not to get the win our football deserved.

Ratings:

Lloris 7.5 - Hands up if you got a tingle when he came and grabbed that corner. Not shitloads to do but liked what he did tonight.

Walker 7.5 - Had a very good game generally. Played two sweet balls through to Lennon and was heavily involved, but must, must cut out the stupid give aways because they invariably put us under pressure and can ruin any good work he does. He was incredibly fortunate when he first gave it away and then dithered and ball watched which allowed them in behind for the only time in the game (a chance Klose inexplicably bungled). he also did 4/5 times when we were attacking with careless little passes, and it results in the opposition breaking with him out of the game and the midfield up the pitch.

Caulker 7.5 - Excellent.

Vertonghen 7.5 - A proper footballing CB. How the fuck did no-one better come and buy this guy.

Naughton 7 - Very competent tonight.

Lennon 6.5 - Marks for effort, but was put through 4 times and didn't make a single one count for anything. A couple of other times he ran into dead ends too. I like having lennon in the squad but we must improve this area of the pitch.

Sandro 7.5 - Excellent game, faded a little towards the end but not noticeably.

Dembele 7.5 - Good game.

Bale 7 - Best game so far this season. Seemed to work harder off the ball (I hope this is because he's been bollocked).

Dempsey 7 - Worked hard, unlucky to have a goal chalked off.

Defoe 7.5 - A very good effort from Defoe tonight. Worked channels, tried to hold it up and played two great little passes to put Lennon clean through.

Impossible to pick out a MOTM, Good team performance.

It was a decent performance, wouldn't rate anyone higher than a 7 or lower than a 6. Walker was decent in defence, Dembele is a great signing. Really impressed by Lloris' positioning, even though he had nothing to do as such, he still managed to make it look like he was playing well by being involved.

Totally agree BC. What baffles me is that some are saying it was a bore fest, pedestrian football - when its clear we looked a much more balanced side with more intelligence. Ok, we need to improve the final phase of our play if you like but I was tremendously encouraged by that tonight and the more the players understand how to play like this the more progression we'll see.

I also was very encouraged by our masterly and professional performance. It has taken away any doubts I had about our ability to stay with the top 3 or 4 in the EPL. Remember, Lazio are no mugs and we made them work!

He seems to have a calmness about him.

I thought it was a typical European tie and was enjoyable to watch. Plenty of positives from a team performance perspective. Sandro and Dembele are 2/3rds of a great midfield 3.

I've been a little controversial in MOM tonight - I've given it to Naughton, as much because of the absurd criticism some folk on here give him as for any definitively head-and-shoulders above anyone else in the team. if I was to give rating, I would probably have 4 or 5, including Naughton on the same grade.

Liked Lloris, too.

Not really. Giving one for a subjective opinion that is neither offensive or crazy is more problematic IMVHO. It is axiomatic that if it is a footballing matter that you disagree with, then he automatically disagrees with you, by virtue of holding an opinion you disagree with. In this case why on earth should he not apply the same standard to you as you have to him. Indeed, I think it is pretty bizarre that you should complain. Bizarre...

Complaining about getting a neg rep after immediately giving one out is somewhat hypocritical though I would say.

...and this.
There is a thread on the ratings system, perhaps you should read it. Myself, I prefer to debate if I disagree with someone, and tend to use the negging rarely and only when someone is being incredibly contetnious, obtuse or offensive.

I know I will get chastised for this, and I'm on a roll at the minute, but the Everton vs Newcastle game on Monday highlighted a lot of things that drive me mental about the Premiership. The tactics employed were so old hat it just infuriated me. I know people enjoy those games, but they just emphasise the lack of control within our game.

I really really enjoyed tonights game. I know there are aspects that need improving on, but we are really well organised and really well coached. If we can improve in the final third we will do very well.
