I'm watching it on FF now and Friedel really was poor for the goal. Goes down quickly and narrow and gives Zamora a big target. Dembele's half hearted challenge on the edge was just as bad.

It was a poor goal to concede, Dembele's tackle was weak and then three of them got done by Faurlins disguised pass, add in Vertonghen wasnt alert to Zamora, Walker played them all onside and yes Friedel should possibly have stood bigger. Multiple mistakes from multiple players... pretty much a snapshot of the whole gamr from our POV, with the team as a whole spluttering badly.

That's not what I saw at Swansea at all.

His movement is not poor - you don't always move to receive the ball you often move to create space as well. If you watch closely you'll see that he is very talented and smart at finding space to receive the ball in, and you'll see that he has good awareness of players around him.

Particularly in the Reading game, he could have had a couple of goals due to his ability to find space in the box. In one instance, the shot was blocked on the line, in another, Defoe didn't lay it back to him.

I'm very confident in this prediction, I'm sure he will become good and I think his struggles so far are just in adjusting to a new team.

I have watched him very closely. For Swansea and for Spurs. He was better for Swansea than he currently is for Spurs but he was never hugely influential outside of his goals and set pieces. You've compared him to Lampard but he's never shown to date the same kind of influence. I hope one day he does.

The Reading game was his best by far but they were a truly piss poor side and even then he was only ok overall. His movement in the other matches at Spurs (all of which i've been to) has been awful. I've watched him very closely and he doesn't create space for others or himself, he moves away from the ball instead of towards it, his appreciation of space outside the box is poor, and he wastes energy constantly moving instead of slowing it down before sharpening it up to find a yard.

Watching him this season I think he's been nervous and lacking confidence. If he can get over that he'll do better but you're imbuing him with a stature he just doesn't currently possess and has never previously shown. He's a good player, a decent technician, 2 footed, scores goals and is a good set piece taker. But he's not the type to have a huge influence in open play, he lacks the personality to do it and if i'm honest I think he'll find his feet quicker at a smaller club where less is expected from him.

Like you said, he'll do better when he settles and with Ade playing and he is a decent player but he'll never do for us what Lampard has done for Chelsea. Certainly not on what i've seen to date in his career.

It's been said a lot that Gallas brings a winning mentality, but I think Vertonghen might bring that even more so. Look how Gallas and Walker both pretty much give up but Vertonghen's having none of it.

Edit - well after watching it 10 more times I don't think they gave up, just didn't try as hard as Vertonghen did to prevent the goal.

There is a very similar incident when Lennon plays Bale in on the break and Cesar stands up and makes the save.

How an earth do you get that Gallas gave that up ? He made a mistake letting Zamora get in front of him to start with, but he then gets back at Zamora (I think Zamora's pass to Hoilet actually flicks off Gallas) then he keeps sprinting to put himself in a position to cover the shot.

Agreed. He went to sleep not anticipating the result of Caulker's header but he tried his very best to recover. He also made some fantastic clearing headers 2nd half under lots of pressure. I thought he had a good game overall.

I must admit that I have been very critical of Lennon so far this season. I felt he lacked forward thinking in his runs. I thought his final product was more of a wing and a prayer than a pass/run with purpose. But finally, I felt he put it all together on Sunday. Good runs, good crosses, and he even took a shot. It's really all we can hope for. I hope he gets his shooting boots back and starts really challenging goalkeepers when the opportunity presents itself. I still would love to see Townsend get a shot to start as I think he could be very very special if given the opportunity to shine. However, if Lennon continues to play as he did Sunday, there's no reason to replace him.

Yeah Gallas doesn't give up. That's why I edited. At first I was mainly looking at Vertonghen and his movement looked most urgent but after watching it again and again I noticed that Gallas did actually try to get back quickly.

I think that's a bit of a harsh criticism on that goal, I saw Windy tweet that at the time. It never really crossed my mind if I'm honest.

The thing that did piss me off was a ball in the second half that went straight through our 6 yard box, 41 or 21 that was his ball to claim, Walker (i think) put it out for a corner and pressure was invited once more. A proactive goalkeeper will alow us to clear our lines better, move up the pitch and keep playing.

I also noticed Lloris position on Thursday when we had the ball, he would be on the edge of the box, and always available for the pass back, it adds another dimension to our play having that.

I tried to explain that to the guy standing behind me on Sunday. Wasn't having any of it, just kept telling me he looked too 'skinny' to be a good goalkeeper.

Mind you he was also telling me he was glad we sold van der Vaart.

It's OK, he was re-captured shortly after full time and has been returned to his facility.

Glad we sold VDV, fuck me with a vinegar soaked sheet of sandpaper.

You do have to worry about this care in the community policy, don't you?

It actually looked that way to me live as it happened. You could just see Friedel's reaction made the goal sort of inevitable. He was slow (which JH points out but watching it again is right) he goes down way to early and easy and sort of narrow not spread.

There is an identical situation in the same goal when Bale goes through on Cesar. Cesar reacts better, stays up longer and makes the save because of this.

Also, watching it back, Cesar makes about three great saves culminating in the last minute one from Defoe. I would bet one of A&C's bollocks that Friedel would not have got to that. Full stretch, finger tip save, on the deck.

I actually thought Friedel was a bit slow to react to Norwich's equaliser too. That may be harsh ?

Hmm, I think the Bale chance was a bit different (from memory), he was wider with less of an angle.

I see what you're saying, and when you have a 41 yr old in goal you can't help wondering with a lot of goals whether he may have been slower/less athletic than someone in their peak may have, those vital few inches y'know.

I am wary though that because a lot of us would prefer to see Lloris, and last season Gomes that we are scrutinising goals like this more than before. I'll remain on the fence with that goal, and to be honest there were a couple of clusterfucks from Dembele then Walker and even Verthongen who may have reacted a bit quicker before it got to Friedel that meant it got there. It was also a reminder that since we sold VDV & Modric that we don't have the same ability to play the kind of ball Faurlin did, which is kinda depressing.
