Good Week

AVB

One win in five, three wins on the bounce. Joint third, a couple of derby wins, player performance improving all the time. Villas-Boas has enjoyed a good week, his efforts on the training pitch appear to be working slowly but surely.

Jermain Defoe

A brace against Fulham, big interview in the Garden, and praise from the manager. Against Liverpool he was completely lost as we struggled to keep possession at all, resorting to punting up to JD and Lennon (always a winner that), on Saturday he got two goals thanks to good approach play from his team mates and the ball staying on the deck.

As the little man said, when the movement is so good, the service is so good, and people are getting up and around him, he can play that sole striker role.

Gylfi Sigurdsson

I feel Siggy has played in his wrong position for the majority of his Spurs career to date. AVB mistook a goalscoring midfielder to be a number ‘10’ that he needed for his system. Fair play to the manager, he has got Dempsey performing better now that the American has been pushed further forward and slightly to the side, rather than being the centre of our attacking play, while Sigurdsson’s best moments have come when played in a more natural midfield position, either centrally or wide.

With Bale picking up a slight hamstring strain, the Icelandic midfielder should get a chance to show what he can. He likes the play to be ahead of him rather than around him, and his assist for Defoe’s first goal showed he likes to drive at people, as well as having a picture in his head of what is going on around him. The run up to Christmas could be Gylfi’s time to shine.

Jordan Archer

The Scottish young international goalkeeper kept another clean sheet for Wycombe on Saturday, and after impressing on an emergency loan he has played 6 times for Wanderers so far.

Still a teenager, the Walthamstow-born lad is making a mark and could be the first of a few quality, home grown keepers coming through our ranks. While they will do well to displace Lloris (assuming he stays with us for a few more seasons after this one) the likes of Archer, Jonathan Miles, and Lawrence Vigouroux could provide goalkeeping options in the years to come.

Sandro

The Beast from Brazil has been fantastic this season and his goal was a just reward for some excellent performances. Perhaps he could give Huddlestone some shooting tips?

Bad Week

Gareth Bale

To be fair, he does a pretty good imitation of a dying swan at times, but his reputation as a diver is as yet unwarranted (the tumble against Villa aside). He is getting caught and because he is moving at such speed it will send him tumbling, and his recent bookings show that diving should be dealt with retrospectively, if only to give referees a break.

The danger from a Spurs point of view is that we will not get fouls when we should, and that Bale might be on the end of a reducer (Charlie Adam arrives at the Lane just before Christmas) and the villain won’t get penalised.

I don’t buy the ‘diving because contact was anticipated’ line but equally it does not mean Bale should wait to get clumped before he takes avoiding action. Gareth just needs to find a happy/safe medium.

Michael Dawson

Poor Daws. Hopefully his injury wont keep him out for too long, not just from his own point of view but because we cannot rely on Gallas to play too many games consecutively, and play them well.

Plus after such a trying 18 months, Michael looked like he was back enjoying his football again.

Tom Huddlestone

I’m a Hudd fan, although I have always felt there is more to come from the man and he could do with some more targeted training (namely his agility and acceleration, once he gets up to full speed he can actually be fairly quick and powerful, bit like a steam train), but it is no coincidence our results have improved with Dembele coming back into the side.

Tom still looks a little off after his long injury spell, his range of passing has not been on show and even Sandro offers more of a goal threat.

He should get more chances but I think the other Tom (Carroll) has impressed more in his displays than his more experienced namesake. Hudd needs to get his passing up to its usual level and add another string to his bow, either better defensive work or more goals, otherwise he is in danger of being this team’s Jenas.

I was expecting to see Hugo in the "Good week" category.
