Why do people rate Mason so highly, yes he is good on the ball but Spurs don't seem to know what his best position is, he is not strong enough to play CM not fast enough to play on the wing maybe in the hole I don't know?

Good on the ball with some of the best technique seen from a younger player for a long time in the Academy.

Best position in the academy was definitelky in the hole - something like 30 goals or so in two successive seasons is something rather special. Most strikers are considered pretty good if they approach 20 goals in a season.

As a CM with Carroll, they got the better of a 3 man midefield against ManU u 21's in Manchester, with the experienced ManU team being led by midfielder Darren Fletcher (4 PL champions medals, Champions League medal, etc) and two other of their decent prospects (both I think have appeared for ManU first team this season). Its the first time I had seen him in that role and was struck by thev fact that he was the main CM, getting his foot stuck in and tackling etc (despite his injury record) wih a great range of passing too - probably outshining a very decent Carroll performance.

Certainly not a traditional winger, and no history thyat I can recall of him playing as a RM or LM (I think Milwall tried him as a RM for a game or two - not overly successfully).

Only issue going forward is that Lewis Holtby is so much more experienced, yet only about a year or 18 months older, and plays in similar positions. Hopefully Mason will come back from his loan better able to join the first team squad and/or get a PL loan.

Also Espanyol do have a B team so he may be going there but they are in the Segunda B league - our league 1 equivalent

On Espanyol's site he has been announced as joining Espanyol B team. Not sure if that means he will be able to play for the first team too at some point.

I also see that Espanyol can extend the loan for a further year : hope we see him back at Spurs at some time though !

What I meant was in some the last years matches, I think remember him being listed as one of the 2 DM's/CM's in the 4231 formation, that said they do get alot wrong like listing 10 players against southampton and Parrett, also I cant remember but has he played much because I remember a period where he disappeared and as you said hes not on our team site

O/T do you go to Loughborough Uni?

No, alas my days of drinking beer in Student bars etc are behind me.

The loaning of players abroad certainly makes sense when the direction and ethos of or youht teams are considered. There aren't many clubs in the lower leagues in England who would be willing to play a youngster who isn't physically imposing. I'd suspect that where possible, this will be done.

A loan is fine and dandy in helping young players experience moving away and adapting to a new club but ultimately, if all they're doing at a club is watching others play, then it would robably just be better to allow them to train and learn with the first team squad.

It'll be interesting to see how many games Mason et al start or play in at least.

Is that the same Darren Fletcher (4 PL champions medals, Champions League medal, etc)that had been out of football for over a year:)

The same player that SAF was lauding as being back to his best. And by the way SAF was selecting half that team for PL matches within weeks because they were performing so well.

BTW did you see that match ?

If you believe every word SAF says we would be playing 96min of football every week,Watched the game on a bad stream.

On Monday at 12.00 Spurs u 21's take on West Ham u 21's at Hotspur Way - West Ham finished top of their group to get into the post Christmas Elite Group with Spurs.. http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/spurs/Academy/U21-league.page?

Of course there are quite a few Spurs players who have played for the u 21's now out on loan (Falque, Townsend, Pritchard, Mason, Coulibaly), Vigoroux is with the Chile u 20's still whilst Lancaster and Nicholson still seem to be building up their training after their ops, so the squad is likely to be chosen from :

Goalkeeper : Miles (and on the bench either McGee or Priestley from Academy)

Defenders : Byrne, Hall, Veljkovic, Stewart, Bathram, Fryers

Midfielders : Carroll, Luongo, Parrett, Galifuccio, Ceballos, Munns, Fredericks (can also play RB), Bostock

Strikers : Obika, Coulthirst (but played u 18's on Saturday) and Kane if he is thought to need to improve fitness.

Its still quite a strong squad, but the best attacking AM's in particular are no longer available.

At this time of year, its possible that some of the best in the academy start to appear for the u 21's - as has Coulhirst already - but as all the likely candidates played on Saturday for u 18's any that do appear are probably going to come off the bench. Possible players include Bentelab (CM), Ball (CM, but often used as a CB), McEvoy (Winger) and Coulthirst (striker)

One or two of the listed squad may be included in the first team squad (eg Carroll, Obika, Fryers) for WBA, but we will knowv that on Sunday

To be fair he was on his way back at the time and SAF did think he was going to fully recover and he played in the first team after that performance, its only recently that he had a relapse and now been told that he will never play football again
