SAN JOSE -- The Earthquakes might have found a replacement for Simon Dawkins: another talented young attacking midfielder from Tottenham Hotspur.

San Jose is considering John Bostock, who made his professional debut in England at age 15, for another loan deal with the Spurs. Bostock began training with the Quakes last week, general manager John Doyle told this newspaper.

The team also expects to sign center back Nana Attakora, a starter with the Canadian national team.
Bostock, 21, was on loan with Swindon Town in England's League One through January. The Spurs have loaned him to English clubs since 2009.

Dawkins currently is on loan with Aston Villa of the English Premier League after playing the previous two years in San Jose. He wouldn't be available for Major League Soccer until the June transfer window if the Quakes could strike a deal with him. Dawkins resurrected his career in San Jose paving the way to his to return to EPL this season.

"We're not closing the door on Simon coming back," Doyle said. "In the meantime it would be nice to see how John likes us and we how we like him."

The Earthquakes have been looking for someone to replace Dawkins' skills but with the season starting March 3 their options were limited.

"There are more options out there," Doyle said. "We're being thorough in looking at them. We're making sure we make the right decisions on who comes in. If we don't bring in John or Simon we still have a good team."

Bostock, once one of England's most promising players, will travel with the Quakes this weekend to Portland for preseason games.

He was the youngest player to start for Crystal Palace at 15 and was captain of England's under-17 national team. But Bostock has not fulfilled that early promise having been loaned by the Spurs four times in five years.

Nb. Bostock's contract ends at end of this season. Nit sure he has ever done anything to warrant a renewal so this could be a way forward for all.

Dawkins is already 25, is hard to see him suddenly bursting on to the scene now....he will have to be sensational at Villa, which is probably unlikely

Bostock I think is one of those players who matured faster than his peers and stood out because he was bigger and stronger, more athletic than the kids his age from young and people built him up as the next big thing and future England star but when he faced men and the physical advantages that made him stand out before were nullified he was no longer a star or anything close to being a star

Nice striker of the ball and decent technique plus he's still young enough to improve and carve out a decent career for himself but it has to be said that he looks like he'll never be a PL standard player.

Good luck to both on their respective loans though

I suspect Bostock's problems are more attitudinal. He does not seem able to grasp that football is a team game and it is not all about him. Either he needs someone he respects to straighten him out like Edgar Davids did with Jamie O'Hara, or someone who is prepared to pander to him and make him the centre of the universe like Neil Warnock did with Adel Taraabt.

But Paolo Di Canio is the latest in a long line to give up on trying to teach him, and I am not sure his skills are sufficient to build a team around...

Dawkins I am not sure what to make off; I saw him play many times as a youngster, and I thought him useful rather than exceptional - the sort of player who might make a go of it in the lower divisions. Perhaps adversity has tempered him into something more.

I disagree he matured faster because yes he was built like a man at a young age, but he had technique at championship level to make him stand out even though most people thought he was shit, every level he has played at he has shown himself to have moments of brilliance but to be honest its moments

As for never being a PL player, I also disagree, if you look back at his championship loans in the past he has done well in matches he just hasnt built on it and something has been lost in translation between himself and his loan club. If you look back and compare his performance to Livermore 2 years back and I told you one would be in the tottenham team next season, not one person would suggest Livermore(but he worked hard and proved whilst he not built for the championship loan system he can be good squad player for us

I think some one just needs to teach him how to read the game and how to play the game for 90 mins and motivate yourself to play the game(people fall out of love with the game and then lack the desire to give it 100%, sounds strange but I found this to be true with myself)
Di Canio didnt give up on him, he actually said he would use his own money or resign to get him back as they cant afford him as they look to go in to administration

Overall he has been a failure but he always has shown glimpses of brilliance, I think this loan could be very good for him and I actually think could kick start something.....

I finish this post later... fucking work:mad:

Well I am pretty sure he was bigger than other kids his age and I have no doubt this made things easy for him because of his natural advantages

Yes I have seen (rare) moments of wonder from him and on his loan (I said he has good technique) not least when he played for my local team Brentford but ultimately he has failed to impress at a level far lower than PL

Let's see in the coming seasons if he ever plays regularly for a PL club, I personally doubt it highly but time is on his side so we shall see

They seem rather underwhlemed so far. Tyical fans though, we're all the same. Just got off a plane, no first team football for a while and with a totally new team on astroturf - he's shit! He'll get another couple of games I imagine. Hope he takes them and earns himself a yr of consistent football. For his career's sake. I think it's fairly certain his time at Spurs is very nearly over.

From those comments it seems they played him in a wide midfield role, adjusting to playing that role has to be taken into account as well.

On balance they do not seem displeased, seeing him as someone who could possibly replace the attacking flair of Dawkins.

Match report v AIK Sweden commenting on Bostock

Robert Jonas@robertjonas
John Bostock did well across the entire #SJEarthquakes midfield, but seemed most comfortable starting from right and cutting inside.

Robert Jonas@robertjonas
@WindyCOYS Dawkins took a few months to get accustomed to #MLS, but became a bona fide star by the end. Bostock has tools to do the same.

Robert Jonas@robertjonas
@Sean_1986 Overall statistically, Simon Dawkins was a top-25 talent in #MLS. For me, Bostock appears to have the skill set to do the same.

Ouch not judged good enough foir an MLS team. Could be off to Toronto then.

Is there no bottom to the JB staory ?

There may be more to this than we'll ever find out...
Maybe they were expecting a Dawkins replacement but Bostock plays deeper.
Maybe he hates astroturf...lol.

He sure hasn't covered himself in glory in his loans.

Toronto won't be so bad for him...large Spurs Supporters Club in T.O.
He could bump into Paul Stalteri some time...

If he does get a contract with TFC...he should get a decent amount of playing time.

Wish he would get signed by Montreal Impact, though.

Its funny because San Jose were desperate to see him, I dont think he has the hunger to be a footballer tbh

who the fuck wrote that article. it has gems like this:

That would normally not be of interest to Toronto FC fans but for the fact that at least one source is reporting that San Jose's lose might end up being Toronto's gain as the attacking midfielder's next stop could be BMO Field.

Has the writer never heard of commas?
