Full time - 3-1.

A great win which almost guarantees our place in the semi finals. Nabil Bentaleb and Milos Veljkovic ran the game aside from that 5 minute period after their goal. Very impressive considering they are 18 and 17 respectively.

Very bright future for this team. Even more impressive when you consider the number of loanees we've sent out.

Elite table after the Liverpool game. Think that could be won now - 10 points ahead of ManU who have 5 games to play and 11 points ahead of Liverpool in 3rd who also have 5 games to play.....and our goal difference is almost worth an extra point too.

...oh and almost back to having scored more than the teams in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places :D (they have 36 jointly versus our 32 !)

My ratings, for the benefit of those who didn't watch:

Vigeroux - 6 - very poor for their goal, but good for the rest of the game. Great save at the end.

Fredericks - 7 - Decent defensively, but going forward he didn't offer as much as I'd hoped given his past performances. Still a solid game from him though.
Hall - 7 - Nothing spectacular, but did his job. A couple of Vertonghen esq-ue runs forward from defence.
Fryers - 6 - Did OK at CB, but when moved over to LB he got beaten time and time again by Ibe. Doesn't look ready for the first team just yet.
Barthram - 7.5 - Looked very composed in defence and did well going forward. A great cross for our second goal was his highlight.

Veljkovic - 8 - Dominated the Liverpool midfield from a defensive point of view, aside from the 5 minute period after their goal. He's only 17, but you would never have known that today. Very bright future.
Dombaxe - 7 - Got overshadowed by the other two midfielders, but still looked good. Another who is only 17 years old, which is very encouraging.
Bentaleb - 9 (MOTM) - What a performance. Reminded me of Modric at times today in his style, and actually his performance today wouldn't have looked out of place in the first team. At only 18, to be producing football like he did today is superb.

Ceballos - 8 - Two goals (1 may go down as an OG) and some great deliveries from set pieces. A bit selfish at times, but if he scored 2 goals, you can't really complain can you?
Coulthirst - 6.5 - Played well aside from the finishing. That is ultimately the main thing for a striker, hence the lowish rating. Held up the ball well and we definitely lost that outlet as soon as he went off, which may have helped Liverpool get that little period of pressure going.
McEvoy - 8 - Looked very lively. One run in particular, where he picked the ball up in his own half and ran away from the defenders before picking a perfect through ball for Coulthirst. Unfortunately he hit it over because McEvoy deserved the assist for that. Another with a bright future.

Overall it's very, very promising.

Should we top the group it looks like we will play the winner of the playoff between Everton and Reading who are both 4 points clear in their respective leagues

how does this league work then? I thought there were earlier leagues which led into the elite leagues (ie the top 2 from each of the 4 original leagues) and that was it. 2 people have now mentioned semi finals and mentioned playing teams who are not in the elite league??

Thanks for posting - espacially since I couldn't watch the game.

Think Coulthirst still trying to get rid of injury he got in last nextgen game which would account for his below average (for him performance), otherwise probably no surprises to find Bentelab, McEvoy and Dombaxe (all from u 18's) loooking good at u 21 level.

Possibly the surprise is that Fryers was not more dominant (5 or 6 appearances for ManU first team), unless he had an off day

But the result to win 3-1 away at Anfield, albeit with a 5-10 woibble, is impressive espacially after loaning out 3 of the most experienced of the team to Swindon in mid week.

Bugger, forgot this was on. Turned on just in time to see the closing montage. Sounds like a good result.

@Pringle

  • At the end of Phase 2, five clubs advance to the Final Stage, which is held in May and decides the eventual champion of the Barclays U21 Premier League.
  • The top three clubs from Elite Group progress to the semi-finals, while the winning clubs from Group 1 and Group 2 play-off against each other to decide who will complete the semi-final line-up.
  • In the semi-finals, the Eilte Group winner faces the play-off winner in the top half of the draw, and the 2nd and 3rd placed clubs from Elite Group meet in the bottom half of the draw. The final is then played to determine the winner.
I suppose to give everyone something to play for throughout the season if they dont make the Elite League mid way through the campaign.

Some general musings about the players today:

As I said, I thought Vigoroux, Fredericks and Hall looked the weaker links based on that game. I'm mainly basing that on technique and what they did with the ball at their feet. Vigoroux's kicking looked a bit sub par for a keeper in my opinion, and for the other two ball control and using possession just didn't seem to come as easily when compared to the others. Plus they had a few issues with the offside trap towards the end.

Fryers did ok, as did Barthram at left back, nice cross for the goal.

Bentaleb, Veljkovic and Dombaxe were a class above their opposite numbers for the most part. The first two in particular look very good prospects. It seems Bentaleb made the better impression to the majority on here but I think Veljkovic is the one to watch out for, can win the ball and use it really well.

Ceballos and McEvoy were lively and displayed some good vision and intelligence. I have said it a couple of times now on here but I really wouldn't have any issue with either being involved with the first team squad as wing cover for the remaining games. Both showed good finishing ability. Ceballos got himself in the right place in the box and rounded it off with a nice header and McEvoy with a perfectly placed shot right into the far corner.

Coulthirst had an off day when it came to hitting the back of the net, but caused problems with his movement and link up play. Missed him when he went off replaced by Munns. We didn't seem to have that focal point in the attack.

After watching this game I would say that McEvoy, Vejlkovic and Bentaleb look like future first squad potential. I think Coulthirst and Fryers could do a job aswell but it wasn't their day. Ceballos and Dombaxe looked pretty solid.

Just like watching the first team:
Good pressing all over the pitch, first to every second ball, went two up, could have increased that on about 5 occasions - then had a bit of a defensive mismanagement of impressive dimensions, and all of a sudden the oppos who looked dead-and-buried and going through the motions a bit get scent of an improbable come-back and they are the ones who are first to every second ball, etc.
Anyway, we won, and deservedly so.
As I have said a few times recently, what is really interesting is the number of exciting prospects we have not playing in the U-21's at the moment (loan/injury). It should be pointed out, for instance, in case anyone failed to make the connection, that the best part of our front 6 are actually U-18's (the midfield trio of Dombaxe, Vejlkovic and Bentaleb entirely so - well, Bentaleb is 18).

p.s. the Liverpool TV commentary folk were hilariously bad :)

Love this thread! Thanks for all the info. Every time I hear about new names. Hard to say who will make it, but it's great we have so many players with a chance. Levy et al have done a great job putting the infrastructure in place.

So Veljkovic played in midfield today? I said the other day that I thought this would be his future position. Trying to think of a player he reminds me of. Closest might be Javi Martinez with a little bit of Daniele De Rossi thrown in. If he can get anywhere near that level it'd be amazing!
