Tottenham have enlisted lawyers to force a penniless non-league club – formed in honour of the north London side – to change their badge, claiming it is too similar to their own cockerel crest.

Fleet Spurs, from Division One of the Wessex League, were founded in 1948 as a tribute to the White Hart Lane outfit but have now had to deal with a backlash from Tottenham’s lawyers, who have written to demand they change their badge.

The alteration will cost the non-league side between £3,000 and £4,000, although Tottenham will allow Fleet to keep the cockerel until they next change their crest.

A Spurs spokesman said: ‘If we do not take action to stop Fleet Spurs using our cockerel logo, it can undermine our ability to stop other unauthorised people who use our logo for commercial purposes, such as counterfeiters.

‘We are very conscious that Fleet Spurs is a grassroots club. For this reason we have been very careful not to ask them to do anything that might incur costs.

‘It was always the club’s approach to deal with this matter amicably and with a large dose of common sense.’

And Fleet, who will now run a competition among their supporters to come up with a new badge, insist they understand Spurs’ standpoint but admit it has been a difficult process.

‘We haven’t got a penny to our name, we couldn’t afford to fight it,’ said the club’s chairman Bryan Sheppard.

‘It’s been quite stressful, we just felt really intimidated by the heavy-handed approach.

‘But I can see where they are coming from.’

Good. Don't care for this type of article or struggle. Did you ask Spurs to use their property? Something which although not physical is a highly valuable commodity and needs to be treated as such? No. You've not got a penny to your name fine but that doesn't mean you have to take what isn't yours.

It's not even as the headline suggests either. Hi Fleet spurs, can you not use our property without consent. Sure, change it when you next can. Fight it? Why would you? It's quite clearly ours. Thanks

It's true though - if they let them get away with it, it sets a bad precedent.

I'm not a lawyer and haven't a clue what I'm on about, but that seems logical.. From my experience watching Suits. And Ally McBeal.

I think it would be good PR for Levy if he pays for their new kits for them once they change their badge.

Yep, some quality PR, pay for the new logo design, get Under Armour to knock out a few kits and some training tops etc, not to much trouble really is it.

sounds like the club has tried to minimise fleets costs and have no doubt had we ok'd it anybody else using it would have their lawyers all over this saying they were copying fleet not Tottenham.
expect a Spurs XI at fleet over the next closed season or two. :)

I have no sympathy for them, they are crazy if they thought they could get away with it.
