Have many managers gone straight into top level management without any prior experience at senior level, as even a coach, and succeded, in the modern game?
Yes

Guardiola and Frank de Boer spring to mind right away as they were promoted from within just like Sherwood

I honestly think this time Levy was fucked over, precisely because there was no plan of succession. Say what you like about him, but if he decides to sack someone mid-season then he has always had a replacement lined up (apart from one time, after sacking Hoddle and deciding the footballing side of things needed to change. He reviewed things, decided to go DOF/Head Coach route then had to wait for Arnesen/Santini/Jol). The fact that this time we had no plan makes me think the board were not preparing for AVB to leave, which suggests to me he walked.

So we have been well and truly caught with our pants down and no clue about who to replace him. De Boer seems to have been someone they admire, but he told them to go away. Things are additionally complicated by the fact it is World Cup year and this takes out of equation the DOF's pal (Capello), the club legend (Klinsmann) and a number of others (Van Gaal), at least till the summer. We also have a lot of managers just into their jobs (Martinez, Laudrup, Pochettino) who aren't interested right now, and a pretty mediocre PL this year that doesn't throw up many other names for consideration based on recent form.

I think, and here I really do fucking hope this is the case, therefore that they have quickly realised they aren't going to get any of their preferred names mid-season, and see it as prudent to keep negotiating behind the scenes and get the right man in place for the summer. They have basically handed the four coaches left the reins, and with Sherwood the most senior he is the front man. These four in theory should have best knowledge of the players, know what makes them tick and who fits in where, and be able to get something out of them quicker. Granted we have had some puzzling initial selections, but lets hope they were making a point with them and they settle into it now, make sensible balanced selections and make the best of this situation.

Great post.

Let's see what improvements we get at Old Trafford.

If we start with Siggi in the middle of a 442 I'll start calling for his head, 4 games in or not.

Amateur management thus far.

Can't believe people attacking Sherwood so much. Ridiculous. So many players out and having to rely on several- Dawson, Holtby, Sigurdsson- who wouldn't get in many other PL sides. I mean that. Forget the manager. It doesn't matter who it is, most of the players are simply not good enough. It's as simple as that. Levy needs to give Sherwood control to rip this squad up because despite the nonsense people spout, it's largely mediocre. Only Lloris, Vertonghen and perhaps Sandro would get in top club's squads.

Arsenal fans were saying the same thing about Rosicky and Ramsey last season.

The players are good enough for this squad.

Sherwood is a bit of a joke to be honest albeit a bad one but not really his fault for taking a job that in theory is an advancement for him - people should be directing their fury at Levy who appointed him after falling out with the Manager he appointed to oversee 'the project' and who he backed with in excess of £100m worth of signings, before doing so having nothing but a complete managerial novice available to take over.

Oh, I have enough ire for both of them.;)

And AVB too. If these people could keep their giant egos in check and work together as opposed to against each other we wouldn't be in this mess.

Incidentally, i've realised why Sherwood has managed to get my back up so much -his manner reminds me inescapably and unforgivably of Alan Pardew.

Yes

FdB was assistant coach with the Netherlands side that went to the World Cup final and coached Ajax youth teams at the same time so hardly zero experience.

Guardiola managed Barca's B team which plays in a competitive league and he won Tercera Division and then went on to win 2008 Tercera Division play-offs to get the Barca B team promoted to Segunda Division B so that is the same as managing in the lower leagues here in England.

Stop comparing Deadwood to greats in the game like De Boer and Guardiola. Deadwood hasnt got anywhere near the credential as these two had when they got their first managerial appointment.

Crazy appointment that was always doomed for failure.

This THFC not the Dog and Duck FFS. We need a top draw manager who matches the status of our great club.

What the hell Levy is playing at I don not know.

Deadwood OUT!!!!!

Shit player even worse manager.

Dreaming. Sigurdsson and Holtby aren't fit to lace Rosicky and Ramsay's boots. Mediocre players.

That's my fucking point.

Many Arsenal fans were saying the same about Rosicky and Ramsey. Saying they weren't good enough for the Arsenal team as they continued to win fuck all last season.

This season they are flying. Why? I hear you ask.

Because they have a world class manager who has faith in them, who has allowed them time and has the ability to maximize their potential through world class coaching. Ramsey has turned into a world beater this season.

Siggi has played in every position but his own position, they've both been in and out of a team where the managers haven't a clue what team to play. The management has been a shambles.

Honestly dont think we could look any more amateurish.

We are a laughing stock.

The only positive I can see is that the more shit we get the bitterness and angryness that used to make White Hart Lane so buzzing on match days especially against the bigger clubs is returning.

Hopefully the hangers on will now fuck off and the proper fans will return.

Actually used to enjoy going to the LAne because of the atmosphere when we was shit. Used to be a much more fun place than it is now.

The guy has been in charge for 3 games and I bet he has hardly managed to do any training with them. I am not having a pop at you. You are as entitled to your opinion as anyone and I'm not saying mine is any more valid than yours but I can't help but reflect on the impatience and fickleness of fans at times and the affect that it has on our progress as a club. Not that the club's management isn't also to blame of course.

Its an absolute joke and it makes me cringe.....nearly as much as watching the gooner fan crying after their loss on the first day of the season.

I dont know who these fans think they support!

Or we could press on with Sherwood and completely f@ck the club up. Sometimes you just have to admit a terrible mistake has happened and then sort it out.

I have seen nothing in three games to indicate he knows what he is doing or knows how to sort things out when they aren't working. Starting with Holtby and Eriksen and then bringing on Bentaleb rather than Capoue was inexcusable.
