Zlatan Ibrahimovic has entered a sexism row in Sweden by claiming the country's top female players deserve to be rewarded with bikes instead of cars.

The Swedish FA has given a new Volvo to former Southampton midfielder Anders Svensson for breaking the record number of caps (148) for a male player.

But female player Therese Sjogran, who has represented her country 187 times, did not receive the same recognition.

The PSG striker, who was this week named Sweden's sports star of the year for the eighth time, said: "The attention that women's football gets in Sweden is unequalled in the world.

"It is a surprising thing. They do their work marvelously well and they will continue to do it, but you cannot compare the individual performance of a woman with a man.

"In Europe. they compare me with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. When I come back to Sweden, they compare me with a female player. With all due respect to women, they should be paid in proportion to what they generate (financially)."

Asked how female players should be rewarded, Ibrahimovic said: "Give them a bicycle with my autograph and that will be enough".

Don't think anyone can argue with this much, if women's football got the same level of attention that men's has, then they would earn bigger salaries etc

It was the bit about the bike that made me laugh.

I agree with you. I'm not into women playing sport.

Well amazingly I disagree. This is a recognition/award thing, not a salary/financial generation related thing. You could argue that a woman playing football puts in just as much effort as a man. Just because it's not widely watched or supported shouldn't mean the recognition is any less. In the Olympics, do they give a more heavily weighted Gold medal to the most popular sports? When a footballer wins SPOTY do they get a solid gold, 6 foot version of the trophy?

I guess you guys support Barcelona/Real Madrid taking the majority of the TV rights money and making the league hilariously uncompetitive because they generate more?

It's bullshit and someone as rich as and with as much influence as Zlatan should know better. As if he or any male footballer needs help with a car.

So you think if a Swedish bowls players completes a record tally of bowls matches then he too should get a volvo? It's not the same, why should the country put money towards recognising achievements which, although it sounds harsh, people don't really care about?

My Dad bought me his autobiography for Christmas. I didn't even know he had a book out but I have a feeling it's going to be an interesting read!

No. I'm saying if the Swedish Bowls Association gives one prize to a male bowls player, they should give the equivalent to female bowls player if they have both achieved the same target. It's the same organisation they're representing and it's not based on what finance they bring in, the fact that it is based solely on gender is absolute bollocks.

Okay, that's a fair point. But the achievements don't both carry the same weight. It's much more difficult to achieve 148 caps in men's football than it is in women's football. Sorry but it's true. Firstly, millions more men play football than women, so for a start, it's more difficult to even make it to semi-pro, let alone to actually represent your country. Secondly, it's much harder to sustain your place in a club or national side, as, like I said before there's a lot more competition for places, plus you're being chosen to represent your country as they try and qualify for the world's biggest competitions. Sorry, but the women's world cup probably isn't even in the top 10 biggest sporting competitions.

I can see what you're saying, and you make good points, but I don't really blame the Swedish FA for seeing the two sporting achievements as unequal.
