Schneiderlin is far more creative/a better ballplayer than Dembele.

I agree that Dembele should/will be the player to make room if we go for Schneiderlin.

Not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread yet, but Schneiderlin counts as homegrown (and can even elect to play for England now).
I don't think he does. You have to have trained in Britain for 3 years by the age of 21 to count as hoe grown. Schneiderlin was 19 when he left France.

He does, he made it by a mere five months. Clever acquisition by Saints that has quite clearly worked out very well.

IMO. I would sell Dembele,Paulinho,Sandro, and replace with Schneiderlin and Kovacic, to thin out our M/F, and give it a better balance,probably get negative marks now.

I too, would make that move (but only because of the injury concerns with Sandro and Dembele, and because you would almost certainly still make a profit to use elsewhere). Kovacic alongside Schneiderlin would be extremely beautiful football IMO.

He qualifies through residency now. Just like Cudicini and Malbranque did. He's talked about it openly: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...France-Southampton-man-Roy-Hodgson-squad.html

This is from wiki

In November 2013, various British media outlets reported that Schneiderlin was eligible to represent England.[16] Under Article 8.1, Regulations Governing The Application Of The Statutes, FIFA Statutes, Schneiderlin is only eligible to represent France at international level as he has played at various age-levels in UEFA competitions prior to gaining British citizenship

Plus when newspapers report that this or that foreign player could play for England they completely forget about the home nations agreement

Home nations agreement

A Player who, under the terms of art. 5, is eligible to represent more than one Association on account of his nationality, may play in an international match for one of these Associations only if, in addition to having the relevant nationality, he fulfils at least one of the following conditions:
a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
d) He has engaged in a minimum of five years education under the age of 18 within the territory of the relevant association.

I'm not devastated by the idea of swapping Sandro for Scheiderlin. I like Sandro, he is one of the best defensive midfielders around, but the rest of his game is pretty ordinary. I think Schneiderlin is very tenacious, likes to get a foot in and is technically better, far more comfortable on the ball and his passing and distribution is better.

Where did you hear/read that? If he joined when he was 19 (as per his Wiki page) he missed it by over a year.

Well he was 18 when he joined, but you're right doing the math that he shouldn't have made it either by being registered for 36 months or completing three seasons. So I have to agree, I'm not sure where it came from either. Maybe because he registered as an English citizen? So has only been a homegrown then for only a year? And then, is it revoked since he joined France's federation?

Since I sent my last post I think I have figured it out, but is depends on what official date the season ends.

The official rule for HG eligibility, states "three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)", so as he turned 21 in November, then he has until that end of season (2010/11) to accumulate the 36 months. As he signed on 27th June 2008, it means the season would have to officially end on or after 27th June, which means would still be in the 2013/14 season right now.

It must have been a close call to get HG status.

An interesting proposition. I wonder if the 2013/14 season doesn't effectively end until opening day of the 2014/15 season? I can't find anywhere where these parameters are defined.

Me neither, but the transfer window officially opens 1st July, so maybe that is when the season starts officially?

That has to be it, an excellent point. Surely has to be one of the closest calls since the rule was made. Is made all the more extraordinary since they bought him two years before the rule even came into effect.

If I am correct, he made it by 3 days.

Yup. Would be very surprised if there's been another situation that came closer, considering it's only been three years since the rule was implemented.

Came on as an 86. min sub to earn his debut for France yesterday (in an 8-0 win against Jamaica). As has also been said, he got drafted for the WC squad after Ribery withdrew with an injury.

So he made the French squad ahead of Capoue.........quelle surprise!

Given the amount of games Capoue got to play this season its hardly surprising, though I am noting your sarcasm. However he still has 6 more caps than Schneiderlin...well, because actually Capoue is a good player....

He's definitely a good player, but I'd much rather see Capoue develop and see what he can do. That first month he was here, I thought he looked as good as Sandro defensively, with a bit more mobility and better passing range. If he can bring that back, and hopefully push on, he'll be a mainstay for us.

Besides, we have Bentaleb as a backup CM, who can certainly fill in if one of our other 3 internationals in that position are out for one reason or another.

Paunlinho is the one I'm not a big fan of. I thought he had a terrible season. He can certainly provide goals, but little else. If rumours are true and we could get anything in the region of £30m for him, I'd sell and look at Pjanic or someone similar. Cabaye alternatively would have been fantastic - not sure how he's getting on at PSG.
