Confused as to why some thought Rose had a good game.

To me it looked like Downing was allowed to do whatever he pleased out there.
I thought Rose was good going forward but for some reason kept backing off Downing and jumping pointlessly to try and stop the cross instead of closing him down. Even when Rose sprinted at him he would stop short like there was some kind of force field around Downing stopping him.

I'm confused on if it was a coaching decision or what because Downing seemed free to put in crosses and even cut inside on occasion, the only time I saw his crosses blocked were from when another player jumped up to cover Downing.

I actually wasn't all that impressed with him going forwards, I recall two good runs, but that was about it. He didn't shine anymore than Naughton did going forward and Naughton only played 30 minutes. Dier seemed to make more dangerous runs than them both in the last 20 minutes (one of which obviously lead to a goal), but he also flashed some pace out wide as well.

I thought he supported the attack well on his side, even if it was just to keep possession. I was surprise with how good Dier was at getting forward, he made some good runs down the right, I was very impressed.

If that's all he's going to do I'd much rather play Davies as that suits his style far better. Rose is better than Davies at only one thing in my opinion and that's getting past his man, whether it's through pace or dribbling. If he's not doing that we're better off playing Ben.

From what I have seen of Davies, he supports the midfield better but Rose supports the attack better, as Davies doesn't get as far forward. Also, Rose looked better pre-season than Davies, so who knows how Davies would have fared against West Ham.

Hopefully we get to see Davies in Europe on Thursday to stake his claim.

I'm not so sure. In pre-season Davies showed for the pass in high areas of the pitch and was actually able to get balls into the box to our players better than Rose. Although it was typically through passing instead of crossing.

That being said I do agree that Rose had a strong pre-season although sometimes he worried me by not being anywhere near his assignment on a few occasions, but he tended to play cleanup duty well.

This is where I miss Spurs Bear!

Ha, sorry boys, only bit I saw of the game was the MOTD highlights which I had on mute because of that **** Ruud Gullit. Cant offer any thoughts on what happened, well pleased with the win though.

EDIT: But obviously I blame Naughton for what happened...

Think Poch likes his players not to dive in to a challenge - if you muck up when you dive in, especially in your own defensive third, you're out of the game. Probably could have done better but I can see the reasoning behind it. Saying that I think Danny could have taken the ball off Downing...
