I feel the big difference in this game was that we did not implode going down to 10 men after a very bad call of judgement by both the linesman an referee. Still also have doubts about the penalty.
Over all a good team performance away from home. Very impressed by Dier on his full debut( cool, calm, collected and a great finish for the goal) Lloris( just a great solid last line of defence) Holtby( I feel he should have started) Townsend( he is nearly back to his best) and Capoue( very solid)
Ok only one game but promising start and performance. COYS

A great start in the sense that it gave us three points, shut up Spammers fans and boosted our confidence while it still highlighted our problems. Had Noble converted his spot kick we could well have lost the game, and I think the need for another powerful striker was evident enough for Levy to finally address it.

Of that handball was against us we'd be claiming it and rightly so. His hands were up and therefore impeding with play.

The negativity in the papers has been quite startling compared to how super teams Arsenal And Liverpool hammered their opposition 16 - 0 and looked like world beaters. It's not like Arsenal scraped a win in the final minute of the game against a side that lost it's manager 2 days ago and spent more on postage stamps than on transfers.

He blocked a goal bound shot.
I think we need to look at it as a neutral.

It needs to be looked at in the right context. Yes he handled, but he could have hardly done much about it at point blank range. His arms were up, but was there true intent? I didn't think so. However he might have stopped a goal scoring opportunity... Therefore a logical conclusion should be that the penalty being given was probably correct, but the red card was very harsh.

By the way, we won! Let's not forget that... ;)

Naughton jumped in front and flung his hands up in the process of moving, his head was looking away and it was clearly accidental. Debatable penalty but no way a red card. In the end justice prevailed.

Loris was excellent and Dier had a great debut but no-one else was overly impressive. Maybe Kane....

Adebayor looked isolated. Erickson gave the ball away too much but also didn't really see him link up with Ade. I think he tends to play too deep behind the striker. Lamela busted his gut but his style seems to look for the flick ons and short passes that would work much better as a number 10. I'd like to see him play behind the striker as that would better suit his style and allow Erickson to be creative and control the tempo of the game in the middle.

IMO the set up was too defensive reminded me too much of AVB with the first 15 minutes we were holding lots of possession but not doing anything with it. The team needed holtby on from the start instead of one of Capoue or Bentalab just to move things along and push the midfield up in support of Ade.

I was impressed with how the team responded though when down to 10 and MP kept his head and you could see he had ideas even then which was really encouraging.

Sure there was luck but you also need to take the opportunity and they did that.

Here's hoping the team starts to take shape. Poch certainly seems like an excellent coach.

I've just sat here, with a palace fan, who thought both decisions were harsh, and he watched it on YouTube a few times and then said:
Actually, his arms were way above his head and he moved them up there rather than trying to move out of the way.

By the letter of the law, that's at least a penalty and most likely a red card for preventing a goal scoring opportunity. No different from fouling a player who's about to shoot.

I say this as a spurs fan, not as a cocky rival.
We've been done harshly in the past a lot, but on this occasion, I don't think we can complain. AND the ref evened the score, how often has that happened??

Hi mate
it wasn't a deliberate handball, and it wasn't a definite goal as there was another defender and Hugo in the mix so therefore I don't think a pen.
Anyway, we got the result so I suppose that is all that matters... along with the fact that Foy is a **** and always fucks us...

I'm not a negative rating type of guy, so I rated you funny.
Because I had to laugh at not a penalty.

You're the epitome of a football fan. Had that been one of their lads and it wasn't given you'd have committed mass murder.

Changing the subject, my thoughts have turned from West Ham to Thursday's match, in the context of the season as a whole.

I'd like to see Soldado start.
I'd like to see Lamela in the hole behind him.
I guess we'll see Vorm in goal.
Not sure about the back 4: maybe ease Jan V back alongside Vlad, if they're fit? I would imagine Davies and Naughton (assuming Naughton can't play v QPR next Sunday).
In midfield it depends who's available but I'd imagine a mix of youth and experience; perhaps Capoue needs another start, maybe alongside a youngster? Not sure if Paulinho is ready but he needs some confidence building so Europe might be the place to do it? I'd give Holtby more game time too.
Obviously in the background, there are complicated transfer discussions (outgoing) to consider, and plans for who starts versus QPR, which will affect who is selected for Thursday.

I think we'll start a pretty strong team so as not to underestimate the opposition. The Europa League is a competition we have a chance of winning and a secondary route into the CL next year.

I reckon the reason Dawson played no part at all was to show him he's really not in the plans of the club. Might make him accept one of the offers at last.
