Not a patch on a prime Alonso and that is no slight on Capoue but Alonso was brilliant at his best. I wouldn't class Capoue as a DM either, he is much more of an all rounder, moves the ball well and does a bit of everything. If people are expecting him to plug every gap and dominate defensively they aren't really being fair to Capoue. I do worry we'll allow too much play in front of our defence this year and teams that can move the ball quickly and play in and out of the zone in front of our defence will expose us. It especially concerns me when we press so much and our full backs push forward. Teams on the counter are going to love that without a player being dedicated to own that area in front of the CB's. Doesn't surprise me we got caught out against quality opposition.

Agree with the first bold.

For me this will always be an issue with a 2 man midfield and poor/not bright FB's. And we exploited it last year against Southampton, breaking on them and scoring.

But lets be honest, Liverpool are a specialist outfit with a well honed routine. All things considered I don't think the midfield did a terrible job yesterday. But for a stupid penalty and Moreno's bullying and serving run and better use of the ball b us in their third, the scoreline could have been very even.

Was kind of worried when Rodgers and Gerrard both made a point of saying what a great manager Poch was after the game.

Rodgers said they switched to a 4-3-3 shape after 60 mins. Was it a 4-3-1-2 before that?
It was a narrow 41212

Balotelli Sturridge
Sterling
Allen - Henderson
Gerrard
Moreno Sakho Lovren Manquillo
Mignolet
They were like us last week and constantly interchanging within the four diamond

Himself and Kaboul just showed him the way. And I don't think Lloris had his angles right.

Kaboul was most at fault. It was a bit amusing watching Townsend and Capoue try, and fail, to chase the guy down but Kaboul had ample opportunity to put up a road block and stop the run at any point. All the twit did though was shepherd him on his way.

do you think that's a formation that could work for us?

We'd need better full backs, and would be difficult to accommodate Eriksen and Lamela effectively wouldn't it ?

Can't see it happening anyway as Pochettino seems pretty single minded formation wise.

But Capoue could have got over there if he had sensed the danger early and at least put pressure on. He didn't sense it, then ran the wrong way and from there he had no chance of getting back. He made really suspect defensive decisions on all of the goals and for other chances, as well as some half-hearted attempts to make a challenge.

He is a good passer from deep though and I think he'll have a good season for him as long as he isn't shoe-horned into a defensive role. Maybe this Stambouli guy can come in and be the defensive linchpin that will allow Capoue more freedom to express himself and get the ball moving forward. I have a feeling Stambouli is more of a Schneiderlin type who is going to be fairly similar in style and substance to Capoue.

I don't know. Lamela behind the front two and Eriksen into the central two trying to get space and more touches on the ball. If Liverpool was:

Balotelli Sturridge
Sterling
Allen - Henderson
Gerrard
We could go:

Adebayor Kane
Lamela
Eriksen - Capoue
Stambouli
You might be right about our full backs though. We lack a bit of pace there too.
