Tough little gig.

Great but hostile atmosphere, tricky little team, diabolical pitch, homer ref and an almost total reserve outfield made this a very difficult night. Despite the aforementioned problems, we put in a solid display that was much better first half than second but remained solid throughout.

One of those nights where collectively we were competent, but amongst that collective decentness was some really woeful individuality. Davies and Kane were absolutely shockingly awful.

Kane is a trier, and he's not without some ability but there are days like today when he looks so bad it's unreal. His touch was terrible, every time he had the ball in good areas he just walked straight into defenders or other equally inanely stupid things. The camera pans onto his face and the expression is very much one of "no-one's home".

Davies had a torrid game. Going forward he looks incredibly reluctant but you'd hope the pay off would be defensive solidity, but tonight he was really poor defensively. Continually in the wrong place, making the wrong challenge or timing things badly.

Lennon doesn't actually engage the opposition physically very often at all, most of the time he jockeys, or shadows in a very non confrontational way. Which is one level above pointless. He is even more of a coward with the ball. You can't give it too him with an opponent too near because he'll just try one of those stupid "ooh ooh ooh man up my arse, the balls a hot potato" flicks that cede possession. Or if he does get on it he'll invariably take the safe choice and rarely does anything incisive. So disappointed we offed Pritchard. Kid might not be the real deal eventually but I'd so much rather be learning what Pritchard is about than watching a player we all know isn't about much of consequence.

Townsend just drives you fucking nuts. The definitive headless chicken. Such a shame because the boy shows glimpses of some inert talent, but it's buried well and truly under a bushel of lobotomised grey matter. He did one little burst that took him past two men, then played the right pass to Paulinho in space. Great. But that was it. He's got to make these kind of contributions several times a game to justify the compromises he brings defensively. Everything else he did was agonisingly poor. Poor decisions, as ever, often a really bad first touch and of course the waste of the odd good position through not getting his head up.

Paulinho was also very disappointing, played through the centre in the advanced position in a game where room was very tight where he was operating, but he really didn't do enough. I'd have left him on rather than Kane because as "meh" as he was he was more involved than Kane and unlike Kane, didn't look like he was wearing his legs on backwards. But it was a tough call.

Four players came out of this with some credit. Vertonghen was very decent on a tough night, Fazio bar one blip was equally sturdy looking. Both looked good together. Stambouli put himself about and was very sturdy and dependable. Bentaleb edged MOTM for me, saw more ball than anyone on the pitch bar Fazio (by one pass) and was the most composed footballer out there. First half better than second half, but still never hid, kept looking for the ball and tried to make things happen. You could see him get the ball, sometimes spin and drop a marker and get his head up, desperately pleading for an option, unfortunately the movement ahead of him from Lennon, Townsend & Kane showed the alacrity and wit of zombies on smack.

Collectively was where some of the positives came. We showed clear signs of some organisational capabilities of the coach. Without the ball people were generally diligent and quite zippy, even Townsend put in some off the ball tracking. Miraculous. There is still a fuck load of work to be done, and it shows. The pressing from the front was hit and miss, and the cohesiveness was also a bit hit and miss, a couple of times I noticed the forwards pressing in unison but Bentaleb, Stambouli or the fb's hadn't pushed up to provide the next wave cover.

Overall though, we didn't allow too many clear chances and considering that was an almost total reserve side, a dire pitch, bar a 15 min phase in the second half, it wasn't a terrible away performance in Europe.

Individual

Lloris - Decent when called on

Naughton - OK. No more no less.

Fazio - One blip, otherwise very sound.

Vertonghen - Very good game. Defensively good, and played some decent football at times too.

Davies - Awful night.

Stambouli - Put himself about, showed a couple of nice touches, took a couple of nasty hits.

Bentaleb - Quietly goes about his job of keeping the ball recycling. Liked that he dropped a shoulder a few times and shook a marker off. Still needs to work harder on tracking his man off the ball.

Townsend - The usual Townsend gamut. Some chutzpah, a soupçon of something good, lots of headless meandering and frustration.

Paulinho - Very, very meh.

Lennon - The gangsta ant just doesn't fool me.

Kane - An uncooperative pair of pins and an out to lunch expression. A worrying combo.

Lamela - Looked lively for 10 minutes, then seemed to get lost in the intellectual vacuum that was the Lennon, Kane Axis.
I have no idea how you've reached the decision that Bentaleb was MOTM. He wasn't bad but Stambouli, Fazio and Vertonghen all put in much better performances IMO.

Because as you can see from some of BeeCee's previous posts, Bentaleb is his flavour of the season in terms of potential. He did not have a bad game but not MOM in my opinion.

The problem is a bad/mediocre game from the likes of Bentlab still beats a good game from the likes of Lennon..(which i haven't seen for a long time). You need the right fundamentals but some of our players just don't have it. It's just talent tbh.

Bentaleb gave his usual display of many touches but little taking of responsibility. With Capoue and Dembele both seemingly playing well, and Stambouli making a promising start, he may find game time limited unless he starts imposing himself more.

Responsibility for what BBLG ? Having four dimwits ahead of him and one each side for most of the game ? Hardly fair we blame the 19yo kid for that.

Did you really just say bentaleb was MOM ? Your fishing for a bite aren't you!?? Agree with a lot of the other stuff but come on mate ? He was poor in possession and completely anonymous for long long periods !!!

Who else think Holtby could of done a good job for us especially in uefa cup games? I would of even preferred him than paulinho in the attacking cm role

Amazing how he managed to see more ball than anyone on the pitch bar Fazio whilst maintaining his anonymity.

Just because you can't see it unless it's got a flag on it and it honks a big look at me horn, don't mean it's not there.

I'm amazed and disappointed by how many fail to see his quality.

I dare say that a player who sees more of the ball than anyone else, yet doesn't do anything with it, is a player who is shirking responsibility. You make the argument that the players in front of him are to blame, but he's been no different with Lamela, Eriksen, Chadli and Adebayor in front of him. He may develop into a good midfielder but right now he is ineffectual and lacking in function going both directions.

What's Dembele's function ?

You mean like when he played Adebayor in against Liverpool, that kind of shirking ?

He isn't a show pony, he doesn't often do the spectacular but teams need players like him at times, players who help you maintain control of the ball and the game. And for a 19yo kid I think it's amazing you are expecting him to be taking responsibility for doing more than he tried to do. You said you liked Stambouli, I think he had a decent game, but what did he do that was more credit worthy than Bentaleb ?

.

How many people said that about Carrick, and then Modric? He's young, still developing and showing a lot of composure and genuine ability. He's a disciplined player. I think he's a far more interesting prospect than any other central midfielder at the club.

I had the game on but don't recall us creating anything of note other than Kane's effort in the 1st min...

I spent most of my time entertaining my 4 week old nephew instead of watching the dire match on the tv. Either I missed something or the media watched a different game as I've come across a headline of 'Townsend sparkles and puts in a MoM performance'.... huh :S, he was horrendous in the 1st half and my only recollection of the 2nd half was our players struggling with the pitch and Partizan being inept in front of goal.

Personally I have nothing against Bentaleb and today I thought he was one of our better players. The Argument started when BC gave him MOM and others like myself said that there were others more deserving. There was no intent to discredit or put down Bentaleb, just conflicting opinions.
