I just went back and watched this MrP. And you are quite right. Good spot.

Whilst watching it I noticed something I hadn't before. Watch Lamela as he gets on the ball and then plays the through ball for Kane, I'm sure he actually glances to his left to disguise the fact that he's playing the through ball another direction.
Yup, the guy's a baller. Shows he's gaining his old self back. Came on and was super aggressive and nearly started a fight (absolutely on purpose) and then shows his total disdain for the opponents by not even looking where he's sliding in a prefect through-ball to set up a goal.

How would you line up others around him then ?

Tricky I guess. Its who fills that right sided spot then. Lennon and Townsend are just not going to give us what we need.

There's something about Eriksen and Lamela in the three that is troubling me, and the former has had a very slow start to the season despite one good performance up at Sunderland. I guess the problem is more to do with our passing and movement in general though.

I'd love to see Dembele pushed up the pitch for a bit. Thought he did well against Newcastle away there - albeit its a small sample size, but it didn't surprise me....he's too much thinking time in those deeper areas and that's part of his problem. Would like to see him in areas were he's forced to act quicker.

But In Poch's 4-2-3-1....I'd be interested to see how this front 6 would fair in an experimental sort of way:

Capoue
Bentaleb/Stambouli

Dembele
Lamela
Chadli

Soldado

The irony was Lamela replaced Soldado last night but had Soldado been on the pitch he would of been fed exactly the type of ball he needs to thrive on - like Lamela threaded through for Kane - assuming he would of made the same movement for the ball, but you take the point.

I think Lamela in behind Soldado could be a very tasty proposition. If it were up to me I'd be building the team around these two. Are two most expensive signings for a reason to.

I've said for a long time I wouldn't mind playing Dembele in that ARM position, and if we have injuries I would, but for now I would persevere with Eriksen and Lamela if we are playing the 4231. Once Pochettino gets us working harder off the ball and winning it higher up, Eriksen will pay dividends, and he's far more productive (even in a difficult bedding in year like last year) than Dembele is ever likely to be.

I think you can play Lamela there but I think it suits him right now being able to drift in from wider positions, easier for him to receive the ball sometimes than the congested centre ground occupied by bus parking teams that Eriksen has to deal with.

I think Eriksen can look a bit subdued sometimes, but he's still a bit less erratic and careless than Lamela can be at times. A calmer presence in a clogged zone maybe.

Don't get me wrong Eriksen is a very good player and it wasn't getting at him per se, more like playing around in an experimental sort of manner whilst considering the balance of the team.

But yes that is definitely what Pochettino should do - persevere with the same three, particularly Eriksen and Lamela. Our two most intelligent and creative players. Like you say, once we get the pressing and all round synergy of the team right, it should bring out the best of these two.

And you want your best players in the side, its as simple as that - providing its not to the detriment of the balance of the side, which it shouldn't be.

See attempting to and doing are not the same. Unlike you I don't really put much value on a player who can "pump a ball into an empty space"

I have issues with Dembele's penchant for holding onto the ball in midfield, but you can't expect me to take seriously your suggestion that either of Livermore or Huddlestone are better options than the ones we have now. Capoue has Huddlestone's passing range and vision and is also able to move quicker than a beached whale and Bentaleb is twice the player in every way that Livermore is.

I wouldn't swap Livermore and Hudd together for just one of Bentaleb or Capoue.

Capoue is certainly not a better passer that Huddlestone is, and his reactions are no quicker.

The point I was making about Livermore is that he has a reasonable expectation that,] the the empty space aimed for is one that there is a reasonable expectation of being filled. This is something that coaches drill into players in training. Hers is a quote from the Secret Footballer:

We memorise every single set piece, where we have to stand, run and end up. We even memorise this for the other players so we know where everyone else will be at any given time.

You know that pass when you say to yourself: "How did he spot that?" Often he didn't need to; he knew the player would be there because, the night before in the hotel, he read about the runs he would be making.

It's exactly the same pass after which sometimes you might find yourself saying: "Who was that to?" The receiving player either forgot to be there or was taken out of the game by a tactical manoeuvre by his opposite number.

Livermore makes quite a lot of passes where you think, who the fuck was that to? But the better the team as a whole plays the less of them he makes.

Eriksen's best form for us has been off the left hand side last season, so perhaps it'd be an idea to try him there with Lamela centrally, only thing then is who plays on the right?

Or what about Lamela on the right, Soldado central, and Eriksen from the left....and Chadli/Ade up top!

I'd love to give this a go';

It's Eriksen, he doesn't give enough overall and Lamela needs someone to bounce off of and if Eriksen is having a slow day it's not gonna happen.

He has a very laid-back temperament and obviously finds it very hard to sustain being fired up - aggression just doesn't seem to be part of his make-up at all. He's just a cool laid-back guy who seems to just wanna chill.

It's why I changed my AM3 for arsenal to Soldado Lamela Kane to start the game. We need to start looking to chemistry first and foremost and I think that would work better with Ade up top trying to embarrass the scum with everything he's got.

What would help both lamela and eriksen in the 3, imo, would be ceballos.

Eriksen Lamela Ceballos rotating with Eriksen giving it some in the pressing stakes and working his bollocks off would work.

I made a post ages ago about:

Capoue Mason

Lamela Eriksen Ceballos

Soldado
Got laughed at - as a lot of my hunches do until they turn out to be right - but that right there holds a lot of righteous chemistry.

Stick a solid back four behind it and it's good to go imo. You get that working and use it as a framework and then integrate other players into it slowly who then feed off of the creativity/movement/momentum etc. that has already been generated by it.

You develop a culture and when players are introduced to it they are absorbed into it.

Anyway, that's my dream.

Yeah you were spot on about Paulinho being effective in the 3 behind the striker....

he was scoring from the cm2 last season, still just as shite in his general play in either position
He was scoring when he was hunting in advanced positions, that's where is game is. He should never be let anywhere near CM2 ever again.

TBH I couldn't care if he ever plays for us again.

I share your want of seeing Ceballos play but I'd llike to see him on the right, Lamela central and Eriksen left but of course license to interchange at will

Yeah, starting position is a formality really, they all switch throughout a game.

What I'd like to see is the front 4 rotate fluidly, that's when you start to fuck with the opponents heads and get your AM3 on the scoresheet more.

Gross won the Swiss Championship with Grasshoppers.

Whether AVB had a more positive mind-set at Porto or not is irrelevant. He couldn't bring that across to England with us or Chelsea. There may be lots of reasons for that but the simple answer is probably the most likely: he isn't a good enough coach to get teams playing attractive and goal scoring football regularly against your garden variety English teams.

And Bale is Bale. He has continued to excel at Real Madrid. He would have excelled if you or I were the coach.

Yes, some of those reasons are called players.

And at least AVB didn't let idiots who sing "he plays on the left" get in the way of Bale excelling.
