What jumped from a bridge or flyover in front of lorry ?
I don't know. If this is true, I assume he thought he would fall and that would be that. I doubt he intentionally jumped in front of a lorry from a bridge. Anyways, it doesn't matter how or why he did it at the moment- his survival is the most important thing.

Of course, hope he recovers if that's what he wants, if he wanted to commit suicide then maybe surviving isn't what's best for him, especially if he ends up crippled for life.

If he does become 'crippled for life', it would almost be worse in a sense. It would also make me even more pro-Euthanasia, if he still felt like he no longer wanted to live.

What terrible news. I always liked the bloke as his commentary was upbeat and seemed fairly impartial. Get well soon geezer.

I'll reserve judgement for the time being, but if it was a suicide attempt potentially endangering other people's lives too I feel no sympathy.

For now, I wish him all the best and hope he pulls through.

Horrible news this.

Depression is a relentless illness, an every day battle for some people. I really hope he's ok and he tries to beat it, for his sake and his family.

Somebody I knew committed suicide last week. He was in his thirties and left behind a wife and twins, aged 3. Gambling addiction did that.

Yep, I imagine a failed suicide attempt (if it is indeed a real attempt and not a cry for help and jumping off a bridge would indicate a genuine one) would only reinforce any feelings of lack of self worth.

I knew a guy once who went off the rails from too many drugs and period of severe depression. He jumped in front of a tube train. Only he didn't die, but he's now only got one arm. Last anybody saw him was in the park drinking meths with the local tramps :(

Hopefully, the reports of a suicide attempt are unfounded and he makes a full recovery. I also saw the documentary he did a while ago and it was very enlightening and he seemed like a intelligent, likeable bloke. Really sad news :(

Awful news when I saw it on SSN this morning. News like this always feels harder to take at this time of year, especially with the fact that he's got a wife and kids at home.

I had no idea that he suffered from depression. Maybe Christmas time can make the illness worse somehow!?

I wasn't too aware of Carlisle until he appeared on Countdown. Later he played for the cobblers for a season and he was one of the main footballers behind of the kick racism out of football campaigns.

An all round good guy and this makes me sad that people suffer in silence

I hope there's a happy ending (to his illness) somewhere in the future for him :(

Yet you're one of the main people who normalise gambling on here. Fair enough that you enjoy it and probably do it responsibly, but the reason I don't like seeing it promoted is because it can be a very dangerous habit.

On the news this morning they said his injuries are not "life threatening". However, that doesn't mean they aren't serious and won't leave him with some long-term problems.

It's been such an awful week for bad news. I wish us all a few calm, peaceful days in the world over the holidays.

BTW, he was once voted Brainiest Footballer in Britain - 10 A grade GCSEs no less! Not your usual footballer by any means but one who could think with his brain as well as his feet.

Apparently it might be spinal injuries but let's first hope what this BBC Journalist says is true:

We're told Clarke Carlisle's injuries are NOT life threatening. Hoping for a speedy recovery for a gentleman of the game.
You'd like to think they wouldn't put this out there unless they were certain on it. Get well soon Clarke!

I was really struck by him when he was on Question Time a while back. In amongst all the usual crap from politicians, he was the only person who would say "well, I don't know about that exactly as I don't have access to all the information, but this is my opinion..."

I hate stories like this. As a parent I couldn't begin to understand why a Father would take his own life (like Gary Speed etc..)
I know depression is crippling but I don't understand it at all. Just find it incredibly sad to be honest

I think this is the problem though...unless you've been through it, it's almost impossible to understand. I'm lucky enough to have never suffered from it, although I've known people who have, and for the outsider it really is very hard to understand which is why it's so hard to help.

I hope he's okay and if it was a depression related accident then I hope he is able to get some help.
