It's in the back of the net! Lewis Holtby (Hamburger) sends a cross in from the set piece and Slobodan Rajkovic (Hamburger) leaps high to connect with it on the edge of the 6-yard box. His close-range header goes inside the left post and the score has changed – 2:0.

Hamburg win 2-0. They are 3rd bottom.

German Bundesliga: From 2008-09, bottom two teams automatically relegated, top two teams from the Second Bundesliga automatically promoted. Third team from bottom of the First Bundesliga plays a two-legged playoff with the third-place team of the Second Bundesliga, with the winner playing in the First Bundesliga.

Holtby played far and away his best game in the Red Shorts. It's interesting actually, his two finest performances for HSV came against Schalke. So Hamburg survive against the odds and face one of Darmstadt, Karlsruher, or Kaiserslautern in the playoff. Hoorah.

Hope it's Kaiserslautern. Remember going there for our euro game years ago. Shit night of football curiously of some poor management by Graham and the trickery of Djorkiev, but great atmosphere and great few days in Germany.

I mentioned this yesterday but Holtby played a couple of eye catching clever incisive passes yesterday.

Really illogical letting him go this season, because he would have been a better fit for Poch's system than some we kept around

Ha I just hope it's whomever sucks the most among those three. Very much like the fact Hamburg are the only ever present German club in the top flight of the Bundesliga.

Yeah dropping pretty much our only good player at the time (Ginola) to play defensively to protect a 1-0 lead from the first league was just stupidity.

We shouldn't have been playing 442 at all, we should have played 451 and I'd rather have played Ginola up front than Armstrong, he'd have held up the ball better and given us an outlet.

Yeah, I can't even remember the team he put out in the end or the formation. I do remember that after they heard we had submitted a team with out DG, Kaiserslautern controversially took their team sheet back and re-submitted it with a defender less, replaced with an attacking player.

Holtby starts in the No 10 for Hamburg's first leg of their relegation playoff. If he plays again as he did against Schalke on Saturday, HSV will be in good shape.

Do away goals count in this playoff? I saw that Karlsruher have only lost twice all year at home. And HSV only won twice in Bund.1 away I think?

Will be a tough ask.

Edit: Away goals do matter.

Yes, they do matter, so the pressure is obviously on Hamburg. It's three away wins though, as they won at Dortmund, Paderborn, and Mainz.

Working against those stats is of course the facts Karlsruher did that against 2. BuLi competition and Hamburg against 1. BuLi competition. Since this latest coach has arrived, they earned ten points in their last five matches, scoring two or more goals in two of them, and at least scoring in each one. The last 30 minutes of the first leg consisted of Hamburg reminding themselves they possess superior quality, so hopefully they'll carry that belief and momentum into the second leg.

Hamburg survived, barely. So, so close to the death of the last Dino.

Interesting tidbit in the BBC match report

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/32969611

Having forced extra time, six-time German champions Hamburg, who had former Tottenham midfielders Rafael van der Vaart and Lewis Holtby in their starting XI, all but ensured victory with a second goal that left Karlsruher needing to score twice.

Included Holtby as a "former" Spur...I know it has widely been reported as a done transfer, but many on here seem to act like it isn't. Seems like the nail in the coffin, no?

There has been no official report of it in English, but it's been widely reported in Germany that it's been finalized. Whether that is concrete truth or not remains to be seen, but the Hamburg fans seem to imply he's permanently theirs and judging by his passion in recent weeks, it does seem as if he looks to be staying.

Loan watch: @LewisHoltby was in action for Hamburg as they secured their survival in the Bundesliga on Monday night - http://spurs.to/yvPLfc

So he's still on loan ?

Wonder if the only sticking point for him signing for Hamburg depended upon them staying in the top league - in which case he's now gone - or if there were other conditions to be satisfied.
