2 - Rise in popularity
- Young Americans aren't just playing it, they're watching it. The lowly MLS attendance scores have already matched the NBA and NHL, but as of 2013, among young adults (aged 18-29), soccer is surpassed only by football as the most popular sport.

I don't even know why I'm being picky as I enjoyed that post, but wihout researching capacity, could this point not be attributed to the NBA and NHL are both indoor sports so cannot hold as many people as football. Therefore if your measuring popularity on sheer attendance then these numbers may not be useful as not as many people can get to the other sports. Unless you mean TV viewing figures.

I have always wanted the US to have a top football league as I am first and foremost a fan of football. Having the US taking it seriously would increase the players produced and create another top league and nation. However the league may struggle if the other CONCACAF nations don't improve as they will have no incentive to improve if they keep sweeping up their version of the CL and you may struggle to attract foreign players at their peak for that reason to bring the standard up.

I hadn't seen or heard anything about CCV this time last year, mainly because I wasn't following this thread. But not even Terry, or Rio or...well any players get game time at CB at 16. I want to blood our youth but if he makes it in for 2016/17 then it will still be precociously early to start in the EPL.

Usually, a 16 year old would not be physically ready for professional football. However, I think we can all agree that Cameron is physically 'ready' and could handle himself amongst men. As I say, with that in mind I think it comes down to whether he has the talent to feature in our first team and I think he has a greater level of ability than Dier with even greater physical capabilities.

Whether he is mentally ready I do not know, but involving him in pre-season would/will go a long way to answering that.

He has shown nowhere near the technical ability of Dier. There is a lot more to being a defender than simply being physically developed at a young age and CCV still has to show that consistently. He has potential, but putting him in anyway above people who have already shown their quality in the Premiership is silly. Although preseason is useful, it's also still a long way from the real games. Hopefully he can at least show he's ready for some first team football on loan to League One rather than another year of U21 football. If you're expecting anything more than that, you're being unfairly unrealistic both to the player and the management.

Totally with sendmark, some people are getting carried away

Died is a very technically accomplished player and a massively promising defender. CCV looks like he has bags of potential, but my guess, given the opposition he's been playing against and his performances (good though they may have been), is that he's some way behind Dier

From all the descriptions you and others make, do we have a new Ledley in the making?

From the first youth cup semi I saw he definitely dominates the box like Rsol and Ledley could. Always attacks the ball and positionally looks very good for his age

Didn't see enough of his athletisism or pace to form a judgement on that but certainly will have the power

Yup haha that is very much a factor. However, fact is they're turning up in droves compared to a decade ago, and the stadiums are bigger but not that much bigger. Ten years ago they were struggling to fill even borrowed stadiums, now they're all building their own stadiums on their own owners' monies.

MLS will likely never reach anywhere close to the strength of Europe's top leagues, but it doesn't need to. As long as it continues to inspire interest in the game here and prompts more of our best athletes to take up the game vs our more traditional sports, it's a step in the right direction.

Another great factor working for us is the increasing amount of evidence of just how bad concussions are for people. More and more parents are steering their kids away from gridiron and towards youth football as a result of this.

He has shown to be a better defender at the same age

I watched Dier at the U20 world cup, whilst promising and had great technical ability he was a mess at the back along with stones and etc.

Hence why England went crashing out, bottom of the group. In an easy group which included Egypt U20's, Iraq U20's and Chile U20's.

Don't think for a second that the england team was weak either, as this was the team included: Stones, Dier, Kane, Ross Barkley, Ward-Prowse, Flanagan and Pritchard

6ft at 17? This kid could well grow to be 8-9 ft by the time he is finished.

And the rest he's 6ft at 17 so that means that he has grown by about 4 inches a year. That means that by 20 he'll be 7ft and by 30 he'll be 10ft 4 inches. No wonder we put a bigger dressing room in the new stadium plans.

How many semi/professional teams are there in the US though? 762 teams compete in the FA cup. Admittedly the coaching standards are pretty low for some of the teams but they are all producing players. I know you rely heavily on your Colleges to produce players but doesn't that mean that you are missing out on late developers? Ian Wright was playing non-league football and only got discovered just short of his 22nd birthday. Drogba and Rob Lee were the same. Also our players are professionals from the age of 17 (i think).

Tbh I don't know how US football works well enough to make a judgement.

There's a fair amount, but problem is it's still difficult to prompt kids to make careers out of it without promotion/relegation systems. They're just entirely separate leagues, such as the NASL. Yeah, we are still reliant on colleges heavily, but that's just the American sport system. The hope is that with the introduction of academies at the MLS clubs, that will drive things away from that traditional model. That model works in other sports where players play well into their 30's, but that can't work for football. Obviously, kids need to be found sooner and gotten into rigorous training schemes sooner so they're looking to play at a top level by 21-22, rather than maybe being squad options by that age (most college grads -> MLS don't become great players) in the MLS.

The biggest driving factor is IMO competition, and that comes with a) numbers and b) the fact the game has spread out from only the upper middle class. The club -> ODP -> national selection system was an awful manner of culling the best players from a nation as large as ours. That's literally analogous to if England had been culling their "best" players from the best players at the top private education institutions around the country. Laughably ridiculous.

He is quick for a CB I've seen him track and over take some attacking players using his strength and speed. He also has a good leap on him and wins a lot of headers for someone relatively small so is quite athletic.

Here's an article the THFCacademy account posted on twitter

Milos Veljkovic
Cameron Carter-Vickers

All involved in U 20 World Cup.

CCV on TV live now. USA vs Colombia. All action game. CCV just made a great goal saving defensive block.

Veljkovic's Serbia just beat Hungary with 10 men after extra time. Live on TV earlier. Through to quarter final.

Yahaya and Nigeria play Germany on Sunday.
