Yep, can't really see why people are so pro this one, don't really rate him that highly as a player and think he'd be much more exposed in our system than the one at Soton.

Don't really see the dominant leadership qualities i'm looking for either, TBH, which is something we're really lacking in.
He was really helped by Fonte at Saints, IMO.

Southampton conceded 46 goals with Fonte and Lovren as their main CB duo in 2013-2014, which isn't particularly great. This past season they only conceded 33 goals, which is a drastic improvement. (EDIT--I was wrong in my minutes calculation for Schneiderlin and Wanyama--as Spurs9 points out, they actually played nearly the same minutes in 2014-2015 as the previous season, so no argument can be made there that they provided less protection necessarily in the CM2 ahead of Southampton's CBs).

But don't take my word for it, just go read this thread: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?53653-Toby#.VYcdzGTBzGc

Those are fans that watched him play all season and they almost all want him to stay. He's a good player who will improve us, and the fact he had zero individual defensive errors that led to goals last season should be something that appeals to us (for a comparison, per Squawka--Dier had 3, Vertonghen had 2, Fazio had 1 against Chelsea and the disastrous mistake against Fiorentina that let Gomez score).

Personally think he'd be a good addition. He's quick for a CB, which I think would be of good use to us with Poch's system. The fact he has previous experience with Vertonghen is not something to be taken lightly, as that can make a world of difference to the last line of defense before the goalkeeper.
When he was playing with Verts for Ajax, he was known for being the slower of the 2 and has never looked quick when I have seen him play.

Now, some may say that is all down to two excellent ball recycling midfielders in Wanyama and Schneiderlin, but here is a key fact: Wanyama and Schneiderlin played 1300 less minutes in 2014-2015 EPL games than in the previous season, as they both had injuries. To me, those numbers, plus what I saw when actually seeing him play for Southampton tell me Alderweireld was very good this past season.

Are those stats not down to coaching perhaps......MS was in charge back then....

I think Alderweireld always looked like a decent CB whenever I saw him last year, but we do have to take account that Southampton's ultra conservative system makes their defenders look better, but more importantly he would want to be first choice and I would be really pissed off if we were buying him to usurp Dier's progress.

Stones is worth so much more than that
I agree, Stones is worth more then that is because of how exposed and apparent he has been over the the last few years, always in the system and the #1 name to look to as the future England CB. The closest comparison I can think of is Phil Jones who he is probably rated right now over in comparison to when Jones was at Blackburn at a similar age(I think Jones was 20 during his prime at Blackburn?) and the big thing is Stones is started for a better team then what Blackburn were at the time.

In regards to us getting Stones, I'm sure Levy knows we can't realistically get him for a 15m sort of price he would;d be willing to pay and rightly so.

Reckon if it's true & we do sign him then we will look to sell Fazio. Wouldn't be to unhappy with that as not been greatly impressed with Fazio. I do like the idea of Potch & Mitchell sorting out our defence first before the other positions our defending at times last season was a joke!

Seems a waste of our transfer budget... Rather just keep one of the duds as the fourth choice behind Vertonghen, Dier and Wimmer.

As others have said, test Everton with similar money offer plus Lennon. Stones will be one of the best defenders in the world IMO, ridiculously composed already.

Jones joined man utd when he was 19 (2 years younger than Stones is now), so would have been 18 for most of his peak there.
