at least 3 of them (Dier, Verts, Chiriches) are pretty versatile and can be full backs too though. So there's that.

Dier as a right back is fucked against pace. That much is so evident to be untrue. If Poch thought he could be a shoe-in we wouldn't need Yedlin or Trippier. He could have just played Chiriches or Dier with an injury or suspension to Walker.

Bleeding obvious.

That's a model that works though. It's the Ajax/Porto/Dortmund model we all talk about.

You don't sign players for the first 11, you just make sure your production line is in order so players continue to emerge organically.

Getting Trippier, Alli and Pritchard to challenge Walker, Mason and Eriksen respectively from below is doing this perfectly.

We just need players to do this for Kane, Chadli and Bentaleb

It's good to sign exciting youngsters but you also need match winners... Porto and Dortmund have a mixture of youth and quality established players... we're lacking on the established quality front.

The more business we do (and the more players we're linked to), the more it looks like we're building a team that we hope will peak in 3-4 years - in line with the completion of the stadium:

Wimmer (22)
Tripper (23)
Davies (22)
Dier (21)
Yedlin (21)
Alli (19)
Kane (21)
Eriksen (23)
Lamela (23)
Mason (24)
Bentaleb (20)
Pritchard (22)
Rose (24)
Townsend (23)
Carroll (23)

Hopefully we can add the likes of Veljkovic, CCV and Onomah to that list soon.

Exciting times ahead for us.

Another five year plan, and here i am waiting for the five year plan from 1992 to kick in..............................:(

Benteke would be crazy to join us. He needs to be playing every week for a team that plays to his strengths.

You can't keep two strikers like Benteke and Kane happy.

and do you really believe we would have paid Benfica's £35m asking price? Never going to happen.

Poch is being backed yet all the obvious players are getting ruled out day after day...

Regardless of how well some of last seasons signings worked out, it's now 2 summers since we went out and signed a 1st teamer who's expected to take us to the next level. All incomings have been cheap, even £10m for Davies (who doesn't play) and £8m for Fazio (squad player) is peanuts in today's market.

Of course we wouldn't have got Salvio. There's a reason Portuguese league players end up at Russian or oligarch owned clubs. Third party ownership

Agreed, even someone like Chelsea got in aging Drogba, and just happy to be there Remy to back up Costa. And now both are going, they're picking up down on his luck Falcao.

If we're going to struggle to bring in a CM and/or a wide forward then we can't go far wrong with Benteke and revert to a Modric era 4-4-2.

Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Verts, Rose, Bentaleb, Dembele?, Lamela, Eriksen (drifting), Kane, Benteke

Blimey.

So you want Dembele to become a goalscoring box to box CM, and Lamela and Erisken to convert into touchline hugging orthodox wingers?

Or should we just buy a striker who would fit into our system?

I know all the arguments against and I was never his biggest fan, but Gignac on a free could have worked for us. He's not the quickest but he's not a lazy or stupid. Could have done a job and taught Kane the odd thing.

I see you missed the 'Modric era', when we lined up with a 442 but Modric drifted all over the place. Eriksen can do the same.

I would rather have 2 quality strikers and try and cater for both of them than have one young striker (Kane) and 2 clowns stealing a living as his cover.

If Trippier is first choice and Rose sharpens up his crossing, then I could also see value in Llorente. He's clever and able to cope with the rough stuff, although it would be a bit like having Crouch all over again.

Sticking with ITK and an actual link with Benteke then he would be ideal along side Kane. We seriously lack alternate goal threats and with the wide forward links getting ruled out left, right and centre... adding Benteke is starting to sound like a good idea.

But you can't. Strikers, more than anyone, need rhythm, continuity and confidence, and you can't make two first choice simultaneously.

We need someone prepared to play an ad hoc role - either an experienced guy winding down a good career or a very young guy willing to play cup and sub games.

And we already have Chadli who's perfect as a back up CF whilst also being able to play wide forward/AM.

That was for half a season while Modric was getting up-to-speed with the league. Then Modric moved to CM and Krancjar/Bale played LW.

Just wonder why can't we sign one quality player a season? we need players with some agression to drive the team. I cannot stand players to come here and just collect salary.... FFS.

trix: If Rabiot has become available then he without doubt will have shot to the top of the pile. We really pushed for him in January but PSG didn't want to play ball at all. If his publicly asking for a transfer has changed things, then I think we'd be all over it without question.
