Tottenham midfielder Milos Veljkovic is the subject of interest from Palermo and Sporting Gijon. #thfc #spurs http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/01/15/palermo-and-sporting-gijon-eye-tottenhams-milos-veljkovic/…

Guess it's good we've got interest in him now, seeing as he's seemingly made it clear he won't sign another contract with us. At least we'll be able to get a few quid.

Last we heard was we were finalising a new contract involving a loan to Brentford

Still captaining the U21s, so still seems in our plans (compared to when Ceballos wouldn't sign a contact)

There was nothing about 'finalising', only that there was a new offer.

Only if he wants to leave to one of them. He'll go for free IMO.

After hearing the commentators in our U21 game the other night repeatedly saying about him rejecting our contract offer, I have to say I agree with you & think he'll go for free.

Hopefully he's desperate to get out & will seriously consider any offer that comes in. Palermo is lovely this time of year :sneaky:

I'm of the opinion he has had a club lined up for ages.

Talk coming out of Chicago that he may go to MLS and play for Fire, who have hired Milos's U21 International manager as their gaffer.

No offence would hate for him to end up there, he should be playing in Euro top 5 league.

Sadly if he goes abroad we won't be due a compensation fee, or a significantly reduced one.

It's not that simple

Have you ever seen him play? I assume not otherwise you wouldn't have asked the last question.

Have any of these people seen him play or are they just reading Windy's column?
There's a whole thread dedicated to our academy with this seasons alone having 5,288 replies. Do you think they are all just discussing Windy's info?

Actually have seen him play. Both in a few under 21 games and the Serbian WC win. I am not that impressed. A good player no doubt who can play at an elite level but i would not say there was antyhing that stood out and matched the hype. So i am still scratching my head.

My part time job is coaching and managing juniors and seniors. You can usually spot an exceptional player fairly quickly. I am struggling to see how he would be the next big thing.

He does not have that ability to attack the ball or the forward like some of the great CB's of that ilk like Campbell,Terry, Stam, Vidic for example.

He does not appear to have that instinctive capacity to read the game and basically marshall a forward out of the danger zone and anticipate his next move before he has even worked it out himself like Ledley King or Javi Martinez after his conversion from DM at Bayern. These kinds of CB's just have this amazing spatial awareness and peripheral vision. Nor does he have Ledley's rolls royce engine. Milos is not quick. He does not have that turn of pace that makes you go shiiiit.

He just seems like a vanilla CB who plays off the shoulder of the forward and tries to mark or suffocate him to death. The kind of stuff you see in the lower leagues all the time. I want my CB's to be able to man mark, work spatially with the other defenders to mark zones, attack the ball when required, shut off channels when required and start offensive moves and counter attacks etc. He looks kind of one dimensional to me. I dunno. Maybe I am missing something. Apologies if i am.

I've seen him a few times too. I thought he was positionally strong, had product going forward (whether that was picking a pass to start an attack or providing an assist) and was able to organise his teammates effectively. I did always see him as a DM to be fair, was never sure why he was pushed into centre back as he seemed more suited to a ball playing position. Really would have been a good option to give Dier a bit of time off towards the end of games at least.

I won't ask when you saw his u21s game but the strange thing about your WC comment is that he made it in the team of the tournament at CB. I also thought he looked like one of Serbia's best players along with Zivkovic and slightly better than their other CB. I have read from Serbian youth watchers that they believe he is their next most promising after Zivkovic in their Golden Generation. He was also the joint youngest player in their victorious 2013 Euro u19s squad at 17 in a team that contained Mitrovic and also made it in that team of the tournament also containing Rabiot, Martial, Bellerin, Mitrovic and Laporte and was one of the 3 youngest along with Martial and is compatriot Rajkovic. Against Spain u21s in their Euro qualifiers at 19, over 2 games at CB he only conceded one goal against a team containing Isco, Morata, Munain, Deulofeu, Roberto and Munir, to cause an upset and knock Spain out, you'd think someone with no positioning or defensive awareness would struggle to keep those guys in check. This all came at CB and he has clearly more than impressed many coaches independent ones as well. I though in the NextGen he developed a good partnership with Ball and we always looked really good at the back. If we had bought someone with those credentials we'd be swooning. Of all of our talented young players to have come through none compare to his international credentials. None have played up an age at youth tournaments let alone won them or made team of the year...Except now CCV. Think about how much we'd go on if Edwards played Eng u19s, considering how much we already go on about him, it's no easy feat yet people just ignore how well he has played and cite Coulibaly or something as a reason it doesn't matter. Someone who hit form in an 17 tournament compared to one who has made TOTT and won 2.

On a personal level though, I have been impressed with him since he was 16/17 and he played in the u21 season where we won the league. He filled in at DM and looked classy both footed and positionally excellent, that was when I thought he was an exceptional player more so than Bentaleb. Ever since he has been my favourite player great to watch and everything I think you need in a DM and he was ready for the first team at 18. Heck he had played some preseason games before at 15. I remember reading in his injury plagued loan spell that one Boro fan said his passing was worth the admission fee alone, which tells you what he has to offer there and I've seen him gain quite a few assists with his long range passing from DM. I said at the start of the season he would have been a better DM than Dier or been good competition for him and I still stand by that from what I've seen.

You're right I don't think he is very aggressive at attacking the ball but I definitely believe he is positionally excellent and reads the game well. I think his strenght is cutting off the danger areas and marshalling peopel away from the goal before going to tackle. In all the times I have seen him play I can't remember him having to chase a striker after making up for a mistake and harrying back to goal, I also don't recall him ever slide tackling as he doesn't need to. He is usually the more cultured of a CB pair and even now with CCV, CCV will be the one to go and attack the ball. I like/prefer Milos in DM and think that is where he should have played but I'd equally trust and be happy for him at CB. He is still the most talented/best player in our academy atm. If he went on loan or to Sporting Gijon or played with us he would have been playing for Serbia by the end of the year.

I assume the u21 games you have watched of him would have been this year as last year he was injured or out on loan. If so he hasn't reached his usual heights while still looking one of our best players on the pitch along with Winks. He is playing with an inconsistent team and defence and let's be serious he has outgrown this level and is probably playing to fill in and help out. I don't think his head is as in the game as he probably has his move sorted, I'd be frustrated and sad too if you were the most promising player have still performed at high levels and seen all your buddies overtake you. I wouldn't go by these performances. Some may say it's unprofessional but the u21s don't have to play him a la Ceballos but they've been working hard to get him to sign a new contract as they know what a talent he is.

Why hasn't he made the first team yet? Timing and Injury. If Tim didn't want a all rounder in midfield and a DM when he was here, Veljkvoic wuld have been the one playing not Bentaleb. As it was Tim wanted his midfielder to do a bit of both and so he took the back seat, and Sherwood attempted to give him minutes at the end of the season. Next year Poch game in and I thought he looked really good a CB in preseason, I was hoping he was going to play but then he went on loan. He struggled to break into a Boro side who got promoted and had their own young CB to develop, much like Wimmer can't get a look in here, and them dislocated his shoulder at Charlton. Somewhere in amongst that he probably felt his chances of playng the following season were slim and din't want to waste not developing here and has since not signed a contract. We have had ITK saying Poch wants to play him suggesting he is good enough, but due to our rules over contract :banghead:, he isn't allowed to play for the first team. So sadly it seems we will be saying Adios.

@IGSpur I think he is really more a DM. I would see Milos struggling in a CB role in the PL. Its a pity we havent seen the best of him in the PL. I think his breakthrough was stifled for a number of reasons as you say. However the fact that Spurs would also invest int two young CB's like Wimmer and Dier indicates that the coaching staff had reservations.

Two contrasting views above, of far more educated/informed opinion than me, have left me just as undecided as I started. Hmm.
Ideally I'd like to see him sign up, and step up into the first team, as either Dier's DM understudy, or battle with CCV as Alderweireld's understudy.
Ultimately, I think he'll be one that slips through the net, and leaves, like Ismael Azzaoui, however, whether they'll be the next Bale, or Bostock, remains to be seen.

Presumably no noise about why he's still playing (and captaining) the U21s if he's definitely off, @Trix? Seems a huge change in what seemed to be our policy...

Suggests to me that the new deal is still on the table. Perhaps we've given him a deadline of next week (so we'd still have time to sell him, before he walks on a free in the summer)?
