Suggests to me that the new deal is still on the table. Perhaps we've given him a deadline of next week (so we'd still have time to sell him, before he walks on a free in the summer)?

I'm sure there is a deal still on the table, he is a very talented kid. We'd be stupid to just write him off until anything was actually signed elsewhere.

If his deal is up in the summer could he not sign a pre contract with someone now? If he had a team lined up wouldn't he have already signed up? Unless of course he is just waiting for the highest bidder. If the mls link is true then that says it all really, better shot of him if he wants to sell his soul like that. Big IF though.

Presumably no noise about why he's still playing (and captaining) the U21s if he's definitely off, @Trix? Seems a huge change in what seemed to be our policy...

He's playing for our U21s who don't have many defenders. There is no point in punishing him I think when we don't have the players to play instead of him. If anything I would believe that he is not in the first team squad because of his contract situation. If he played well in the cup or the Europa League then I think he would have much better offers and then it would probably reduce the chance of staying.

@Flashspur and @IGSpur

I think, as IG said, Veljkovic's strength is his ability to read what's going on, his intelligence, his technique under pressure, passing ability but I do think, like Flashspur, that he would be better utilised as a CM than a CB at senior level, footballing CB's are a lovely thing, and at development level he could do it well, but at first team EPL level even the King's, Ferdinands and Vertonghen's need the physique to compete and not get bullied by some of the world's best strikers (Stones is a great example too). That said I'd still rather have played him at CB anytime last season than Fazio or Chiriches.

And like IG I still think, despite the decent job Dier has made of it, that Veljkovic could have been a better, more "footballing brain" version of what Dier is. I still think Dier's future is as a CB, and he'll be a wonderful, symbiotic partner for the silky Stones for England for years to come.

I think if Poch (or Sherwood or even AVB) had used his noggin we could have played a CM3 for much of last season:

Mason Veljkovic Bentaleb

And I think it would have been an outstanding combination of dynamism, intelligence, tenacity and "football".

Would have definitely been better with the MF3 last year IMO. Our defensive stats last season were woeful.

If this is true, hope the reason the Club decide to sell now and not let him go for free in the summer, is to insert a buy-back clause. So still have a bigger chance to get him again, should he blossoms into a top notch Pro player.

nice idea, provided Werder Bremen accept such a clause.

Sadly I suspect Spurs have no real say in the matter, either we accept their offer or he goes for a development fee (no more and possibly less than the £500k deal) and no buy back clause in the summer

Hopefully a first option - optimistic.

Bummer. Really had high hopes for him here at Spurs and thought, with his skillset, he made the most sense to backup the role Dier currently occupies.

I guess its wasn't possible to integrate all our development players into the first team....i am very disappointed Veljkovic has decided to leave.

Wouldn't sign a contract extension

Yeah, sorry, I realise that but where'd he lose the love for the club? Just seems strange for such a talented player's relationship to have petered out this way. Presumed Azzaoui was down to home sickness, as he hadn't been around for very long, but to lose two of our highest rated youngsters for next to nothing in a matter of months seems a tad careless. Guess time will tell...

Yes. With Fazio on his way out and Jan injured this spring could be the chance for Veljkovic to break into the first team. We'd look quite thin in numbers across the back if both Fazio and Veljkovic leave without anyone coming in. I hope he stays and plays enough to sign a new contract.

Welcome to #Werder, Milos #Vejlkovic! The #U20 world champion has signed a contract running until 2019.
