I know it's lippy but isn't it dippy to think of an hippy being zippy ending up as a mippy without ever eating a whippy?

He's the only one of our strikers who can hold the ball up to a decent standard. Far more to his game than just his goals

I completely agree, but I don't agree with the moaning about not getting another no. 9 in January. Losing H would require us to change up the way we play, but I also don't think it would be the end of our CL hopes.

hertyid: Our club ethos is clear and has been for a while as many of us have been saying.

We don't want to spend a lot of money but it's there if absolutely necessary.
Poch sees Chadli and Son as good enough to backup Harry.
The team is balanced and settled and it would take someone magical to break that up, certainly not a joker like SB.
Trust in what we have, the grass is not always greener.

Pity there wasnt a Saha or Nielsen about yesterday. But if we couldnt sign Dembele because of the loan back option, then why not announce in the coming weeks he has signed a pre contract?
Whilst I understand this window is very tough for club getting in players, and those that normally come in are very expensive, its a bit of a joke that we didnt bring in cover.
Dembele only emerged in the last few months, so who was Plan B or C if Berahino wasnt signed?
No doubt it takes three to conclude a deal, but really Levy and Mitchell have no excuses....
The only thing that will make this is ok, is Dembele announcement within the next few weeks, and early signing for the summer.
I feel if we do manage top 4, we could be looking at a different level of striker to sign, possibly Michy Batshuayi or someone of that ilk.

Maybe that's the point
The manager has repeatedly stated his happiness with the current squad, but has suggested if a player they feel would undoubtedly improve the team were available, a deal could be done.
So, in the current situation, the options are less plentiful, but of the squad as is can nail down top 4, the suddenly that player pool opens right up, Berahino then becomes Batshuayi or Lacazette etc, so rather than commit funds now, hold on and see whether we're buying off the top table or not.

Stick or twist.
Looks like we're going to twist.

The money we got for Townshend has gone straight back into the team... as contract extensions.
I disagree! There is a budget for wages and similar, and pretty certain any transfer money is not used for that but rather to aid any incomings.

Yep wages will be kept around 60% of turnover.

Townsends wages may have gone towards contract extensions but not his transfer fee.

The budget for wages is now going to be pushed, that's the thing.

Bonus' and wage boosts are often in contracts for players whose team makes the CL. Not to mention all the new contracts we've already handed out and the new ones that still need signing as well.

Contract wages is not lump sum, but over a duration so does not effect as under different existing budget I would think with forecast and room for increase. There is a lot of revenue coming in; ST renewals, TV money, CL money (guaranteed). You then have pending sponsorships, naming rights and such like once Boris approves the final planning which is s given.

Taking all this into account it is not as bad or critical as one may pensively think.

Some might find this useful too. Our head of player ID just tweeted;

Embodying your philosophy within the formulation & execution of a specific scouting process from identification to recommendation is vital..

12 months on, 146 live games later (non-THFC) & I'm more convinced than ever that a well defined process positively influences outcome #COYS

Read this in AVB voice and it doesn't sound so cute.

hertyid on bentaleb: He has a big entourage of agents and the protracted contract negotiations last season pissed off a lot of people at the club. His demands increased consistently as the season progressed and by June last year he was asking huge money and talking in the papers about how "tired" he was of the process and how "flattered" he was by all the interest he claimed he was receiving from Champions League clubs. Unsurprisingly this was mainly bluster and there was nothing concrete for him to use as leverage so in the end he backed down and signed a still very good contract with a big pay increase.

Then after his injury he came back and was annoyed not to be in the first team. There was a lot of noise from his "people" and his attitude was suspect in training. He was given some game time and it was felt his concentration and commitment was lacking. He wasn't committing to Poch's vision and high standards.

In the Jan window there was an attempt to drum up interest away from the club by his representatives with people claiming to be his "agent" giving interviews to European media outlets about his future being uncertain.

Poch said in a press conference that Nabil will have his chance if he works hard in training and proves himself. But right now he has fallen back in the pecking order. Mason has fought back in, Carroll has fought his way in, there is plenty of opportunity but he has to give 100%.
