Tottenham must improve squad to compete in Champions League and Premier League, warns Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has warned Tottenham they need a better squad to compete in both the Premier League and theChampions League.

Unless Arsenal beat Aston Villa by an improbable margin, a draw at Newcastle on Sunday will be enough to ensure Tottenham finish second in the Premier League. They are guaranteed a place in the group stages of Europe’s main club competition next term.

Pochettino committed his future to Spurs this week by signing a new five-year deal to stay at White Hart Lane until 2021. But to repeat what they have done this term, Pochettino believes he needs better players.

“We have to improve our squad – this is very clear,” said Pochettino. “We are all agreed about that. The Champions League is a different level, and to compete in that, the Premier League and the domestic cups is very important.

“You need a very good balance. Our challenge is to continue as we have done and the Champions League demands a lot of energy, more than the Europa League. It’s a very different competition.

“For that we need to ensure we have a strong squad who can compete in all competitions.”

A few reports saying Burnley want Grant Ward. I wouldn't want them to get him permanently but perhaps they would be a very good option for a loan.

Yeah, I'd like that as a loan. He's a pretty intriguing talent that could find a role in our squad down the line given the versatility he boasts.

hertyid posted this: We have money for sure. But I don't see us blowing 30m plus on multiple players. Note how Poch says we need a strong squad. It's all about strength in depth, not superstars. Also clear that a few can move on if right bid comes in.

We played a youth friendly with Rangers 2 days back. This was Mcdermott's quote on him . - "Grant Ward came back after playing 90 minutes in his final game on loan at Rotherham at the weekend and I thought he was exemplary. He was our senior player and I was really pleased with his approach and how he led our team"

Neil Warnock & before previous Rotherham manager has already heaped praise on him & he has been voted their young player of the year.

I dont think we would be sending him anywhere. I expect us to play him in preseason with the first team squad & probably then take the call.

I believe same will be the case for Dominic Ball.

I don’t know my way around the SC site well but I figured page 250 of the ‘Summer Transfer Wishlist Thread’ is as good a place as any ! This doesn’t qualify as ITK or anything more than hearsay. None of it will be that surprising or new to many Spurs fans. Take it or leave it.

1. More than ever, we recruit on personality, not just ability. So throwing around ‘names’ of talented players (the Rebrovs and Adebayors) might be fun for a wishlist but our management now look much deeper at the person than we used to. I haven’t seen it but Poch apparently has a specific list of attributes ANY player must bring to the table BEFORE even being considered as to whether he’s talented enough to take us to the next level. Things like passion, being prepared, arriving on time, being open-minded, wanting to improve, mental resolve. Think Harry Kane and you have something very close to the definition of the personality Poch demands. Without it, no amount of ‘FIFA16 type stats’ will get you signed by the new THFC.

2. I was in Ledley King’s box for the Southampton game (Box 26!). He was charming and it was a privilege. We chatted mostly about his autobiography and his community work (and some amusing asides about Arry). Even if he had told me anything he knew about transfers I wouldn’t quote him here. But he was extremely discreet. The only thing he did say that I’m sure he wouldn’t mind me passing on is that (in his opinion) it will be a summer of low activity; “2-3 ins and outs”. I’m pretty certain he used 2-3 in its sense of ‘a low number’ rather than precisely 2 or 3. It might be 4? But don’t expect loads.

3. I have since asked another ex-Spur I know a bit who, like Ledley, claimed not to have any privileged information but who is still often around the club. He thought it’s impossible to predict transfer activity compared with when he played because it depends so much on the market nowadays; is what’s available a genuine upgrade? Can we obtain the player at a decent price? Would he or his wages disrupt the team? Do we want to sell an existing player without being sure of an upgrade? What youth prospects do we have in the position? Etc. This ex-Spur thought it’s even more difficult for Poch because he has a relatively short list of actual targets; they have to be genuine upgrades but affordable, and also good guys who suit or complement our playing style whilst not disrupting the tremendous team spirit we’ve got (with players who genuinely like each other).

4. However, he then said (only his opinion), qualifying for the CL changes things. Not so much in a financial sense. We’re expecting to be drawn in a tough CL group (we’ll most likely be in the third pot). Reaching the knock out rounds is a decent ambition, especially if we play away from WHL. Going even further in the CL would a huge bonus. But the PL is the thing. We must consolidate our Top 4 position for the status of the Club (“we don’t want to have to suffer that we’re just one season wonders shit” - his words). In order to improve our PL points total next season we obviously can’t stand still. To do that Poch needs more options. He also needs more balance, and more depth. We’ve done pretty well with injuries this season. Next season we might be unlucky. We’ll be straight back to playing twice a week at top level from September and Poch is a big believer in the ‘first team squad concept’, not just a first XI. So this ex-Spur thought we might be a bit more active in the transfer market than people think. It has since occurred to me that one of the topics Poch would probably have liked to discuss with Ferguson would be the whole area of squad / keeping 25 top players happy / picking different blends of teams every week / playing PL and CL together, etc.

5. I don’t really follow the European leagues (except a few La Liga matches on Sky). I don’t know much about individual players. In MY opinion, most of our targets will have PL experience but we’ll go abroad for our main striker candidate. At least one signing will be ‘unpredictable’ on the pitch (to help break down park-the-bus opponents). And we’ll try and sign a suitable “old hand” with CL experience, who still has some energy in his legs but can get on well with our young team. So (i) an overseas striker (ii) a young ‘Hazard-Mahrez type’ dribbler / creator who can be a complement to, as well as cover for, Eriksen and Lamela (iii) a ‘Carrick-Alonso’ type’ defensive midfielder with CL experience who can drop into back-4 during a game like Dier (iv) plus a ‘Berbatov-Modric-Bale type’ but Next Level prospect who Poch really wants. I just have a sneaking feeling Levy’s going to pull out a rabbit or two this summer. Time will tell.

Or perhaps just a case of Poch not wanting to put the players down, telling them they aren't good enough in the middle of a title challenge.
Also telling some of the squad players playing this weekend, "pull your finger out, if you want to be here next year"...

Would love us to go for Ross Barkley, ticks a lot of boxes for us. Young, English, can play CM or AMC to provide better quality alternatives than we have in them positions, I think he'd fit really well into our squad.

Really don't get the hype with Barkley he's no better than what we have imo

Yeah, would be terrible if we signed another reject like VDV, Davids or Parker

There's a big difference between signing a player being squeezed out at Real Madrid (who had just signed Di Maria and Ozil) and Adam Lallana. Also, Parker wasn't a reject, he was West Ham's captain and player of the season when we bought him.

Thanks for posting. As you started out saying, a lot of things we already know or at least "know", but most of all this is a great post to sum up exactly where we stand before this summer window. Everything is spot on how I (and indeed most of us) see things, so great contribution.
