Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino looks at Dutch striker Vincent Janssen
By Lyall Thomas

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, his assistant Jesus Perez and head of recruitment Paul Mitchell attended Republic of Ireland against the Netherlands on Friday to watch potential transfer targets.

And Sky sources understand the most notable among them was the Dutch striker Vincent Janssen, who plays for AZ Alkmaar.

Janssen was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season with 27 goals at just 21 years old, and a new, young centre-forward is of priority to Spurs this summer.

Sources in the Netherlands have told Sky Sports News HQ that Janssen is of interest to a number of Premier League clubs, with Tottenham and Leicester among them, and Janssen is keen on a move to England.

Pochettino, Perez and Mitchell were pictured sitting with Southampton striker Shane Long's agent Pat Dolan, whom they all know well and looks after a number of Republic of Ireland players.

But they were primarily there to watch Janssen, who is a target for Spurs along with the Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi, whom Mitchell recently watched in the French Cup final, and Bournemouth's Callum Wilson.

Sky sources understand that Spurs also want to bolster further attacking-midfield, defensive-midfield and centre-back options in the next transfer window and the Dutch national team have other talented young players including Ajax midfielder Riechedly Bazoer.

Janssen reminds me a bit of Vardy apart from not looking like a 1 week old heron chick.

It'd be somewhat of a gamble... He was playing in the second tier up untill a year ago, before his meteoric rise this season. Has it all to prove...

I can't say I've seen much of Janssen but what I have seen I really like, and at 21 would be perfect to fulfil the back up remit and wouldn't cost as much as Batshuayi meaning we could maybe try and buy better quality AM like Drexler or Fekir who would make better quality chances.

Kane, Janssen, Son, Harrison would be absolutely delighted with a set of strikers like that.

You keep saying this but it's completely dependent on us actually wanting a quality AM like Draxler or Fekir, but there's no evidence we do.

I've only seen him in his clips and the friendly against England. What would you say are the qualities that would make him shine in the PL?

I know, I'm just going on what keep getting said in the media etc and by what I would actually like. I don't think I've claimed anywhere that I know or think this will happen, in fact I'm pretty sure it won't.

He seems robust, two footed, not scared to go in where it hurts, has a range of finishes (that first goal in his 15-16 youtube clip for example was a lovely deft finish). I've seen about as much of him as you, so I'm not saying "Yes love this guy" but baring in mind I'm not as fixated by the whole "back up striker" thing as most and that I don't think we are going to sign the two strikers I'd most like to, I'd happily settle for a young up and comer like him for a more reasonable price than 25-30m for someone like Batshuayi, who I really don't see playing enough to validate a huge fee or growing his value.

I'd love a Fekir in the team

I don't think Janssen is as quick as Vardy

Maybe not overall, but he's the fastest player on the pitch at getting to a loose ball that's for sure. His closing speed and acceleration seems very quick.

Reminds me of Kane, to be honest.

I came to the same conclusion myself before I ever even saw your comment. He just has those gut-busting runs for the 50-50 balls and seems to have that same Kane-esque knack for being in the right place at the right time. His positioning with defenders was very good from what I saw and in general just seems to make really good decisions.

I'd say it's pretty likely Poch has noticed our lack of flair or creativity in the final third of the pitch, as well as from the middle of the park, too.

If we think logically, outside of Eriksen, what actual creative players do we have?

I do see your point, but it's also easy to see the logic behind the post from @Bus-Conductor , no?

I want another AM as well but I take issue with your post.

Firstly, I do not think there was a big lack of creativity. We scored the 2nd most goals last season. with Alli, Eriksen and Lamela in the Top 10 for assists. The latter two were in the top 6 for chances created as well but I'm not sure about Alli. Eriksen is certainly not our only creative player.

There were plenty of times we completely dominated teams but weren't clinical enough. That meant that if we weren't thrashing a team, we were having difficulties getting the win. I know I've used the fact that we were the 2nd top scorers as evidence for creativity- but I also think the same statistic disguised the fact that we just didn't take our chances enough last season.

I want another AM because outside of the 3 players I've mentioned I'm not sure we have much creativity. This window is all about adding quality depth to properly compete on 4 fronts next season, and that includes adding another AM.

We created more chances than any other team in the Premier League last season, no idea how anybody can say we lack creativity with our best players.
